One way only,and when Sask gets low the lines dead.They dont export much to Alberta.
I know (electrically) Sk, Ab, BC, & Montana are connected. I recall a power
outage about a decade back that was eventually blamed on a lightning
strike in Montana, & it left outages in all three Canadian provinces. Most
of Saskatchewan was blacked out for several hours.
I remember the day well. I had no cash on me (only debit), & was hunting
for an ATM with power when I ended up getting a speeding ticket. I wasn't
speeding, & I was pretty choked. I don't forget things like that easily...
Why would it need to go two ways? When you have perpetual surpluses, it's pointless.
When you guys get your oilsands running you will need extra power at times,thats why it's good if it can flow both ways.Alberta and BC swap power every day depending on demand.
Maybe they import from montana but in Alberta we just switch to bc power if our lines go down like right now,we have been on bc power for a month here in southern Alberta while they change out the lines.
Nice to have the option,especially after an icestorm which we call moneymakers.Same with B.C.When they want to do maintenance on their lines we supply them with power.Not many guys left do hot work on live lines unless they have too,especially when replacing lines,it can be done while energized but thats one reason that kid died here a couple weeks ago and another in Calgary last month.
There are a couple peak plants in the province to handle any down time. Another (86MW) is currently being built. They only operate when (if) needed.
Selling to the States isnt a good idea anyways,not sure if California ever did pay B.C. hydro or not.
MT, ND, and MN have no choice but buy our power which is fine by me. We aren't short of any energy around here.
Ship oil to Quebec? Alberta wants nothing to do with that, it reminds them of the NEP and eastern control over their resources. Just like enough geothernmal energy could be produced to send electricity east, but it won't happen for the same political reasons.
The West lacks its fair share of seats in Parliament which limits our clout where power lies in Canada. Alberta wants simple solutions when it comes to selling its energy, and the USA fits the bill here.

No,Alberta can only send power to B.C. and Montana,Saskatchewan is where trans canada power stops because of their system.
I just know that Sask. has no switching system for power to go back and forth.The linesman who are mostly from Sask. anyways say it's time for an upgrade.
On the eastern grid all are tied. MT,ND, SD,MB,MN. If AB had extra they wouldn't need to buy from SK for the eastern portion of the province would they?
