BTW Upgraders are sort of "green". They use coke from the heavy oil upgrading process to run the refineries thus reducing nat gas consumption.

We need more plastic? CCRL already refines finer than any other in Nor Am. Everything from paint to pills comes out of that puppy.

No no.. We can reasonably export plastics and derive more value from that resource than pumping oil to another country.

Btw, I already know what the follow up to this will be from cap'n. ;)

You would still have to do a full refining job to extract those components for plastics which would leave you with having to deal with the transport of the retail-style fuels.

Okay, not what I expected, but to this point - the profit would still outweigh the costs of manufacturing.

But you still didn't hit on the real weak point of this idea.. something that the environmentalists seem to be overlooking. That is the industrial development of plastics and probable overproduction at the whim of the profiteering plastics industry.

Would you want to live in a town that reeked of plastic 24/7? Plastic is a bottom of the line product and it's heavy to ship from inland. Not profitable.

I was hoping for "stupid greenies producing Evian bottles." :)
Glass is far far greener.

Coca-cola strongly disagrees with you.

The plastics industry is (obviously) already in place. The only difference in your scenario would be where the industry physically locates itself.

The impetus in the location of the refineries has much to do with placing them as close to the markets as possible. Having a very large volume of raw materials to deal with means that the most suitable locations are near large metropolitan areas or international ports.

Hooray for the Regina Global Transportation Hub better known as the Inland Port conspiracy theory of years gone past but now it's a reality theory..

Have I ever mentioned the conspriracy theory come reality theory "energy corridors" from Canada to Mexico?

We're also gonna f uck up a huge opportunity if we give in to this project.

Over 50% of all petrol is dedicated to gasoline (not surprisingly). So, therein lies the solution to our energy crisis. If we could cut petrol use by half that would already be a huge boon for us maintaining this resource while reducing our s hitty dependency on it.

And it just so happens that there is a pretty good viable alternative out there:

Now, obviously there is an infrastructure for this technology that has to be developed and the tech itself needs to be refined. The second problem is that the unit cost is still just above the mass market.

All of that would sort itself out in the next decade.

The pipeline will delay that sort of progress considerably.

People need to get into the mindset that the sooner we get this dependence out of the way, the better.

Ya it's a byproduct and suncor uses it to fill in the tailings ponds as they drain the mft out of them now useing poly flocculents.
I spent a year with TRO(tailings reductions operations)up there and it wont be long before all their ponds are reclaimed,I would guesstimate 5 years tops.

I used to get a headache, burning eyes and throat every time I got near one of those ponds, thats nasty stuff in there.

Take that chart and make it Canada only and it's a complete different picture.

Coke as they have so much of it.That will get rid of their spontaneous combustion problem they have with it.
The fly ash gets hauled to a different place and is very nasty, they use contractors to haul it away as their employees arent allowed to work more then a few hours a day in it.They have a small mountain of coke at suncor that you can see from the highway next to pond 6.

They should give it away to hippys who live off the grid. So you want free energy by the donkey cart eh?

I may have to go back pipeline inspecting for a couple years.Make enough to retire with.
All I need is a big white csa approved cowboy hard hat and a set of bumper nuts for my truck and I'm all set.

The economic reality demands that there are a finite number of these facilities that are possible.. How many refineries will compete for overlapping jurisdictional demand?

The oilsands will probably double in size the next 7 years, and Sask. is just ramping up on their steam injection on their oilsands and will rival Alberta's soon for production. It's a good time to be a pipeliner!
