It's all about choices, there are no excuses.

Well that's right..........100 lbs. of spuds, 50 lbs. of brown rice, 50 lbs. of flour, 100 lbs of pork bellies, a few eggs and some vegetables and hey you have it made. Oops yeast, pepper, and a couple of condiments.

Think back to when your mom and dad were raising their family and the kind of foods that were common each day.. Even adjusting for inflation, and assuming that there weren't a lot of commercially prepared foods, the cost to feed the family was a pittance compared to what $200 buys you at the grocery store in terms of convenience foods, 'snacks' etc.

That's why I don't find the screaming for more money, higher wages too convincing. Sometimes when I get behind a shopping cart at the grocery store and see what's on it, I have to stop and puke! Probably $ 20 worth of cardboard, tin and glass.

You can live like a King on $10 a day (beer included).

Homemade cookies and pizza have no wrapping.

A fifty percent tax will not work, the people most addicted to junk food will pay the same
as druggies, or alcoholics, or smokers for that matter. Face it the only way to get people
to change is through education and incentives and the pocket book is a good head start.
I don't think so either. Huge tax like that would drive food businesses out of existence. And I think educating people and giving them incentives would work. Incentives like insurance companies cutting premiums for NOT living unhealthily, for instance.
Also, gov't could can advertising junk food. Companies have a huge array of the sneakiest ways to con people into buying their stuff. Gov't canned advertising for booze and cigarettes, they can can advertising for foods with high content of saturated fats and the like.

Maintenance cost per unit of operation remain the same. It is the fixed costs that come down with better usage.
You really think it's just as easy to maintain a 50 year old piece of machinery as a 5 year old one? lol That's funny. Try getting parts for a 50 year old John Deere 850 dozer. Most people end up buying two and using one for parts or just selling the one to a collector and buying a brand new or a newer machine.
Metal stresses after a while, parts wear out, etc. My dentist's x-ray machine went down last spring and the techie had to take the entire arm apart just to replace the wiring inside because a couple of the wires had shorted as a result of wear and tear on the insulation. Why do you think people buy new vehicles? They get tired of the increasing amount of repairs on the old ones.

Put the same kind of picture on bags of chips etc. as on cigarettes but show what clogged arteries look like or a diabetes infection just before limb amputation.

You're half right! It likely won't stop them but it may provide enough cash to ream out their arteries 20 years down the road! -:)

You got that right and when you get old you want something you know will start when you turn the key and won't quit on you when you are 50 miles back in the gin sings at 20 below.

Just caught a discussion on C.B.C. this morning- exercise is absolutely the most important single factor in combatting high blood pressure. High blood pressure is bad in that it narrows the arteries and when you do strenuous exercise you are creating a demand for more blood throughout the body and the increased blood flow opens up the arteries and if you do enough of it, it will repair the damage done.
