RB,

Did y ou even read my post??? When did I ever suggest we introduce US healthcare. I'm not proposing to do away with universal healthcare.

I'm glad your family has received appropriate health care when they required it. However, this certainly isn't the norm, we have stories everyday in the media about health care and the problems with wait times and lack of resources. Are you telling me that everything is hunky-dory with our medical system??

If our system is so good why are there so many wealthy Canadians who are going south to get their health care needs satisfied??

When the last time you wanted to see a specialist? How long was the wait? On a personal note, I told my GP about a mole that I thought had changed he wanted a dermatologist to look at because he agreed that it didn't look right. The appointment was 6 months later, then when the dermatologist took a look at it he also agreed that it should come out and because of where the mole was we had to make an appointment with a plastic surgeon. That was another 4 month wait to SEE the plastic surgeon who then scheduled the surgery for 3 months later. So all together it took 13 months for a mole that everyone believed could be cancerous was finally removed. ITS A 5 MINUTE PROCEDURE!!!!!! Luckily it turned out not to be cancerous but it wasn't normal either. We're all told to check moles regularly and that we shouldn't wait to have them checked out. I did my part by bringing to my GP's attention. Then OUR health system dropped the ball for 13 long months.

Again, I'm not suggesting we abandon our health care system, but am trying to make suggestions that would allow for extra money to be generated for the health care system that Canadians are going to spend south of the border. I appreciate a good discussion, but find it difficult to debate with someone who puts words in my mouth.

Because of the long waiting times here, often the NB Government busses patients with heart problems to the Eastern Maine Medical Center for treatment and there are roughly 10,000 of us without access to a family doctor.

You do realise that news, by its very nature, is something out of the ordinary, don't you? Did you want me to list another twenty or thirty people that I know personally who have received excellent care? It's not news when that happens because it shows the system is working.

I'm also not denying there are problems. Every system has problems. The US has an infant mortality rate that rivals third world countries and a life expectancy that looks a lot like the poor parts of Eastern Europe though. To suggest that we fix our system by making it like theirs is goofy.

I am saying that two tier health care (which is really what the US has), one system for the wealthy and one for the rest of us, will make the problems worse for the rest of us even while it pushes costs up in both tiers. Properly funding our current system takes care of everybody while still remaining less expensive than a US-style system.

Go read the studies, starting with the Romanow Report. Check the numbers. Learn the facts. Don't use the underfunding in health care that has been promoted by those who see nothing but an opportunity for profit as an excuse to destroy what we have, tibear.

RB,

Again, I'm not suggesting a US style health care. A rich person will NOT be able to buy their way to the top of the list.

I'm suggesting a system whereby the health care system could have access to millions of dollars which currently is being spend down in the US. A system that in the end may actually reduce wait times and provide better health care for all Canadians.

Comparing our system to the US is not what I'm talking about. Please re-read my orginal post.

Hey RB , ten to twenty percent of the bill , is that too hard for you . Different states have different medicare policies. The fact that many Canadians run to the US for medicall help tells a lot about your so called universal health care.

How do you think those 40 million uninsured Americans are surviving ? Even illegal immigrants can avail of health care. You're reading too much liberal newspaper , my friend.

Nice spam job, Canadian Observer.

Hey RB , ten to twenty percent of the bill , is that too hard for you .

When that ten to twenty percent can cause people to go bankrupt it sure as hell does, CO.

And one more thing , does your universal health care cover the medicine ??? mine in Ontario don't (sic).

No, and neither does the health care in the US. That's why Americans are coming to Canada to buy drugs...at least we have price controls. Of course the bozos that want to destroy our health care would also love to get rid of those.

I'm suggesting a system whereby the health care system could have access to millions of dollars which currently is being spend down in the US.

No, you are suggesting a system that would provide better care to those who can afford private plans and would, by its very nature, take medical professionals out of the system available to the rest of us even while it raises costs for the government.

If you want a system that works look at the Romanow Report. It's all in there. If you want to see which system is more efficient look at the plethora of studies that have been done showing that a mixed system is more expensive to operate.
