Never said it was a big deal, but I find it a bit comical how some of the more offensive members in here took enough offense from what I posted that they had to thumb it down.

Like I said, if I wanted to be a real jackass, I'd say something like how so many people are making a big deal out of nothing, that everybody dies eventually, I could have brought up how the whole thing was a political farce to look better than the Russians, or I could have easily switched this into a tasteless debate over the moon landing or some other conspiracy, among many other things.

But I didn't, because that wouldn't have been polite.

Still, it's pretty funny to see what some in here will target, insult & make fun of over the years, yet get all uppity & serious over something like some old guy dying whom they probably never met, had no direct impact on their lives, and his "heroic" deed amounts to a political stunt, having his ass strapped to a rocket and putting his feet on a ball of dust. He didn't save anyone's life, he didn't solve world hunger or prevent WWIII.

But I do respect the guy for downplaying it all for most of his life.

Now I suspect there'll be a live program on tv for everybody to watch his funeral & glorified for everything he has done.

I'm not saying they shouldn't, but I'm sure this will all get milked for everything it's worth.

I bet nobody made a big deal when that dog that was shot into space died.... Cuz that was a pretty big deal too.

Happy now?

I have respect for him as a pioneer and explorer but your comments never bothered me one bit....he's dead.
He would probably have liked the fact that someone was getting a smile from his passing,I know I would when I die if people had a good laugh at my expense.

Oh so this is a memorial thread?

Didn't see anything in the subject header stating that and it's in the news section.... seems like any other thread to me & thus, fair game.

I don't see what the big deal is anyways..... when I die, crack all the jokes you want.... it's not like I'll come back to haunt your ass or anything.

.... Or will I?

If I was going to be disrespectful... I would have pulled out bigger guns than the above post.

I don't know about you, but I was a little saddened to hear of the death of a great astronaut. He probably contributed something to the betterment of mankind, certainly didn't do anyone any harm.

Well I'm not glad he's dead and don't really get enjoyment from someone's death, but I look at it like how I'd want others to treat me when I'm dead.

I don't want some doom and gloom misery sob fest. I'd want some laughs, some jokes, some wise cracks. I just want a good 30 mins of laughs (even at my expense) then toss my body in a burlap sack & catapulted off into the forest to let nature take its course. With any luck, I'd land straight into the camp fire of a family of 5 & scare the crap out of em.

For me, I've seen over the years so many people go on and on about if the moon landing happened or not and all the conspiracies that came about. There's also that incident with him and some other guy talking about it not happening, or whatever.

Along that context, that's where I was coming from with my original post in this thread.

But obviously some got their anus all in a pucker-twist, that they took what I said to be something more than what I meant.

It wasn't meant to target or trash his accomplishments or make fun at him dying, but more to poke fun at the conspiracy nuts whom I was surprised haven't said something by the time I came into this thread, so I figured I'd just cut to the chase.

You gotta admit however, I got a debate going. ;)

Besides, people still think Elvis is still alive and living on some tropical island.

Seemed to make sense tossing out a similar rumour. Both were considered big names in their fields and both were big deals when they died.

Most are alright with the Elvis stuff, but somehow not this situation.

Too soon? We need some time to get over it first?

How long is that?

Bit hard to measure from individual to individual.

Also, I've been to more than my fair share of funerals (many more to come I imagine) and been Pall Bearer & helped buried a number of my family members & friends. I guess I have a different perspective than some towards death, and my family cracks many jokes like I have.

Some may understand where I'm coming from, and obviously others won't.

Major Networks Eulogize Neil Armstrong, Ignore His Recent Criticism of Obama’s Handling of NASA

Testifying in front of the House on Sept. 22, 2011, Armstrong took advantage of his last opportunity to voice his concerns to the legislative body in a rare public appearance. These were his words.

America cannot maintain a leadership position without human access to space. After a half century in which Americans were being launched into Earth orbit and beyond, Americans find themselves uncertain of when they can reasonably expect our astronauts to travel to the International Space Station or other off the earth destinations in other than a foreign built and commanded spacecraft.

America must find ways of restoring hope and confidence to a confused and disconsolate work force. The reality that there is no flight requirement for a NASA pilot-astronaut for the foreseeable future is obvious and painful to all who have, justifiably, taken great pride in NASA’s wondrous space flight achievements during the past half century.

Most importantly, public policy must be guided by the recognition that we live in a technology driven world where progress is rapid and unstoppable. Our choices are to lead, to try to keep up, or to get out of the way. A lead, however earnestly and expensively won, once lost, is nearly impossible to regain.

Neil Armstrong To Be Buried At Sea

A different sort of sea of tranquility awaits Apollo astronaut Neil Armstrong, who died Aug. 25 following complications after heart surgery. He was 82.

The final resting place of the legendary Apollo 11 commander will be at sea, Armstrong's family said through a NASA spokesman on Thursday.

Armstrong and astronaut Buzz Aldrin landed their lunar module, named Eagle, on the moon's Sea of Tranquility on July 20, 1969, and spent 2.5 hours exploring while crewmate Michael Collins orbited in the lunar command ship.

Details of Armstrong's interment, including whether it will be in the Atlantic or Pacific ocean, are pending, said NASA spokesman Bob Jacobs.

A national memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. EDT next Thursday at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington DC. The service will be carried live on NASA Television and streamed online at nasa.gov and nationalcathedral.org

Neil Armstrong gets a Navy ship named after him. Actually, he gets a new class of ships named after him

Navy Announces Research Vessel to be Named in Honor of Neil Armstrong

From Department of Defense
WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced today that the first Armstrong-class Auxiliary General Oceanographic Research (AGOR) ship will be named Neil Armstrong.

Mabus named the future R/V Neil Armstrong (AGOR 27) to honor the memory of Neil Armstrong, best known for being the first man to walk on the moon. Armstrong was an aeronautics pioneer and explorer for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) serving as an engineer, test pilot, astronaut and administrator. Armstrong also served as a naval aviator flying nearly 80 combat missions during the Korean War.
