Quebec Mosque Attack Motive

no evidence outside of those two Facebook likes (for Trump and LePen) have been provided to substantiate the claim that Bissonnette behaved like an extremist online.

Moreover, refugee advocacy group members who say Bissonnette was known to them as an extremist online… Well, they too have yet to provide any evidence to substantiate their claim.

In the meantime, Canada’s mainstream media has carried on with a portrait of the suspect as a right-wing extremist, while calls for more gun control abound.

Families of Quebec City mosque victims face financial struggle

Many wives of the men killed or injured in last week's Quebec City shooting at a mosque are wondering how they will support themselves and their children.

At least six of the victims were either the sole breadwinner of their family or self-employed. That's left their families with no regular income.

"[The shooting] happened on Jan. 29. On the first of February there is rent to pay, but I know the bank accounts of the deceased people are blocked, so it's complicated," said Mohammed Haroun, treasurer at the Islamic Cultural Centre.

The attack on the Quebec City mosque left six men dead and 19 others wounded. As a result, there are now six widows, five mothers who split their time between their home and the hospital, 17 fatherless children and more than two dozen children whose fathers are recovering from gunshot wounds and the emotional trauma of what they witnessed.

Haroun said the mosque started by giving each family money, to deal with what he called "immediate needs."

For example, the families of five of the six men who were killed have travelled to their countries of origin for funerals and to bury their loved ones. There were plane tickets to buy, sometimes for up to six people.

People from across Canada and the United States have been mailing in letters and cards of condolences, many of them with cheques.

Haroun and some friends have been scrolling through the pages of online fundraising sites, such as GoFundMe, which charge up to 8 per cent for taking the donations. So far, he found more than a dozen dedicated to the mosque victims' families.

Clearly this bothers you. Perhaps you should just accept that social conservatives are dangerous and volunteer yourself for the registry. I'm sure the authorities will go easier on you if they don't have to track you down.

Like citiots everywhere they refuse to go where the jobs are. One can find many white born in Canada degree holders driving hacks, making coffee, working at self serve gas bars. But that is not discrimination and does not fit your failed narrative.

I can agree to an extent. A few Chinese friends of mine had moved to Scarborough ON or Richmond BC over the years since they faced less discrimination there. Some of them started business that have flourished since, yet they were getting nowhere elsewhere in Canada.

While laws against discrimination help, they cannot solve all problems and, as unfair as it is, sometimes we need to move out of areas where we're discriminated against to areas that will welcome us.

These are times when the death penalty could make sense. Maybe he be can become BFF with Bernardo, as I'm pretty sure he'll never be a free man again.

I think if there is good case for it, it is that piece of slime in Calgary who murdered and tortured the Liknesses and their 5 year old grandson. What purpose could there possibly be for keeping that a$$hole on the planet?

Jobs for social workers and jail guards. Probably a liar or two paid for by the government too.

So true. Flossy laughs when an Islamic Terrorist mows down innocent victims.

But when an NDP Terrorist kills muslims he suddenly cares.

The 33-year-old nephew of one of the victims of January's deadly mosque shooting in Quebec City was in court yesterday to face charges of uttering death threats against the alleged gunman and his family, Radio-Canada is reporting.

Mohamed-Amine Ben-Faras, who is being held in a Quebec City detention centre, appeared briefly via video-conference in a Quebec City court on Monday.

He is accused of threatening to kill or injure Alexandre Bissonnette and members of his family.

Bissonnette has been charged with six counts of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted murder in the Jan. 29 shootings at the Quebec City Islamic Cultural Centre.

The threats were reported to police by witnesses who allegedly heard Ben-Faras utter them last Thursday, according to court documents.

Ben-Faras was arrested Saturday.

No address was provided for him, but Radio-Canada is reporting that Ben-Faras arrived in Quebec Wednesday on a flight that originated in London, U.K.

A native of Morocco, his last known address was in Italy. He also studied in Germany.

Ben-Faras's parents live in New York and were stopped while on their way to Quebec to meet their son, Radio-Canada says.

They were released after being questioned.

At Monday's hearing, Crown prosecutor Sabin Ouellet argued that Ben-Faras should remain in detention.
Ben-Faras said he wanted to be released immediately.

The judge ruled that Ben-Faras must remain in custody until a bail hearing on Thursday.

Ouellet did not comment on the exact nature of the alleged threats.

He said Ben-Faras knew the name of the suspect and the names of some of his family members, but he didn't know where they lived and didn't communicate with them directly.

His relatives in Quebec said they have not have any contact with him.

Ben-Faras is being held in the same detention centre as Bissonnette, and Ouellet said steps were being taken to ensure Bissonnette's safety.

"The police confirmed to me this morning that the measures are being taken," the prosecutor said Tuesday.
Quebec City police are leading the investigation into the alleged threats.

Ouellet confirmed that he had asked the RCMP's intelligence services for any information they might have about the accused.

MONTREAL — Quebec’s main opposition parties are coming out against a call to make the anniversary of Quebec City’s deadly mosque shooting a day of action on Islamophobia.
CLEAR YOUR SNOW! Besides being dangerous to themselves, fellow motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, I wonder if drivers realize how silly they look asthey try to navigate our streets with their vehicle’s windows and lights covered with snow, all because they’re too lazy to clearthem off. We’ve had one snowfall this season and already I have seen many examples of this annoying annual behaviour. Don Ruttan Toronto (Happens every year. They should be charged with unsafe driving because of obstructed vision) WHAT REPUTATION? Re “Wynne sues Brown for defamation” (The Canadian Press, Dec. 12): The most absurd part of this lawsuit is that Wynne’s lawyers are contending “Brown’s statements harmed Wynne’s reputation.” At a 17% approval rating, I’m not sure there is any “reputation” to harm, is there? This is simply a poor attempt at trying to distract Ontarians from thinking about her government’s daily activities of incompetence. JONATHAN SMITH RICHMOND HILL (Another example of clogging up the courts with nonsense. Brown misspoke and should say so, but to suggest Wynne’s reputation was harmed is absurd. Everyone knows Wynne wasn’t on trial in Sudbury) POT LAW WILL FAIL It is clear that the legalization of marijuana will fail its stated objectives and we are on track for another costly boondoggle that will implicate the health and well being of Canadian society for many years to come. The stated objectives are to “keep cannabis out of the hands of children” and “keep profits out of the hands of organized crime.” Legalization will achieve neither. Legalizing something legitimizes it. Children will now see marijuana as a safe, legal product denied to them only due to their age. Since we will be allowed to grow up to four plants in the home, children will have increased access to this narcotic with no control over its quality or potency. The introduction of edibles will see an increase of incidents involving young children exposed to cannabis-infused candies and baked goods. The Liberals take pride in “evidence-based” policy decisions, yet when informed by the Canadian Medical Association that the legal age should be 25, they chose 18. Organized crime will continue to thrive. Government-regulated growers and distributors, burdened with regulations surrounding potency, taxes, employment standards will be unable to compete. Most Canadians were comfortable with decriminalizing marijuana. No one wants to see young people get felony convictions for simple possession. Instead, we are now faced with a costly bureaucracy and government machine churning away, while some people get rich and our society is left with managing the negative aspects of another potential social problem. GUY BOWIE TORONTO (The government should have decriminalized simple possession and left it at that) IRRATIONAL THINKING Re “Minimum thought: Wage hike poorly executed by a bankrupt government” (Lorrie Goldstein, Dec. 12): Ann Hoggarth says small businesses who cannot afford the idiotic wage hikes should not be employers. She’s right, and they will not be. Since Hoggarth’s “business” experience is running a teachers’ union, she is completely unqualified in rational thought. Anyone who thinks that raising the minimum wage will promote economic growth has no actual experience, making government their only hope of a wage. That her comments are insulting is irrelevant, just like an apology would be. D.R. CHEVALIER NEWMARKET (The Ontario Liberals claim if you increase the cost of doing business it creates more jobs. In fact, the opposite occurs) </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> " data-medium-file="" data-large-file="" width="950" height="712" src="https://postmediacanoe.files.wordpress.com/2018/01/0901-na-carfire-e1515514019137.jpg?quality=60&strip=all&strip=all" class="wp-image-406933" />

Last week, the National Council of Canadian Muslims wrote to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, asking for the Jan. 29 anniversary of the mass shooting one year ago to become a national day of remembrance and action on Islamophobia.

The director of the organization said such a designation would help enhance public education about hate, bigotry and Islamophobia and that a day of remembrance is supported by dozens of other Canadian Muslim groups and community partners.
But both the Parti Quebecois and the Coalition Avenir Quebec say the term Islamophobia is too controversial.

A PQ spokesman says the party believes the tragedy should be remembered every year, but notes the term Islamophobia is already a controversial term, while the Coalition says the day should honour the victims of the shooting.

Anti-Islam group member attacks Trudeau for making 'revolting connections' between organization and Quebec mosque shooter

MONTREAL — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had no regrets Tuesday for his veiled insult against members of a nationalist, far-right group during a speech in Quebec City in honour of the victims of the 2017 Quebec City mosque shooting.
Capping off four days of commemorations Monday night for the six men killed last January, Trudeau spoke out against racism as well as people he called “dumdums,” who wear clothing with images of a paw print.
The paw print is a symbol for La Meute, a member of which replied to Trudeau on the group’s Facebook page Tuesday by hurling insults at the prime minister.

Sylvain Brouillette, an influential member of La Meute, wrote that the prime minister made “revolting connections” between his group and the gunman who murdered six men after prayers at the Quebec City mosque last January.
La Meute is a secretive group that is harshly critical toward Islam and denounces “Trudeau’s version of multiculturalism,” according to its public Facebook page that has more than 20,000 followers.
Its members have protested against the thousands of Haitians who arrived in Canada from the U.S. to claim asylum status in 2017.
Brouillette also criticized Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard’s speech in honour of the mosque shooting victims.
Couillard said he didn’t understand why “some people feel they are more Quebecer than others despite the fact their ancestors were also immigrants. … The date you immigrate doesn’t determine your level of citizenship.”
Trudeau responded to La Meute’s criticism by standing by his comments.
He told reporters in Ottawa he would “always be there to denounce people who aren’t building a better and more open society for everyone.”

Judge to rule Feb. 8 whether Quebec mosque killer Alexandre Bissonnette gets 150-year sentence

QUEBEC — The man who killed six people inside a Quebec City mosque last year will learn Feb. 8 whether he spends the rest of his life behind bars.
Quebec Superior Court Justice Francois Huot heard final sentencing arguments Wednesday for Alexandre Bissonnette, who pleaded guilty in March to six charges of first-degree murder and six of attempted murder.
The Crown is asking that Bissonnette receive six consecutive life sentences for the 2017 murders, meaning he would not be eligible for parole before serving 150 years in prison.
The defence has argued the sentences should be served concurrently, meaning the killer, 28, could seek parole after 25 years.
A sentencing hearing was held in June, and a decision was originally expected in October. But Huot requested additional information on the constitutionality of consecutive life sentences.
In court Wednesday, the judge asked whether a mass killer such as Bissonnette is as blameworthy as a serial killer or a hit man.
“If the Crown today argues for 150 years for Mr. Bissonnette, what are you going to ask me one day for these serial killers or contract killers?” he asked.
Crown prosecutor Thomas Jacques replied that Bissonnette, who walked into a mosque in the provincial capital in January 2017 and opened fire, committed one of the worst hate crimes in Canadian legal history.
QUEBEC MOSQUE SHOOTING: Alexandre Bissonnette sorry for murdering 6 people
QUEBEC MOSQUE SHOOTING: I had dreams for my future, tearful Bissonnette says
Inside the life of Quebec mosque killer Alexandre Bissonnette
He said someone who, like Bissonnette, kills six people in the space of 90 seconds is clearly just as blameworthy as someone who kills the same number of people over a period of months.
“It seems to me extremely dangerous and harmful to send the message through the courts that a multiple killer, who kills a multitude of people in a single incident, has less moral culpability than someone who kills just as many over a much longer period,” Jacques said.
He noted that Bissonnette had plenty of ammunition when he attacked the mosque. “He was looking for glory,” he said, prompting Bissonnette to furrow his brow in the prisoner’s box.
Bissonnette’s lawyer, Charles-Olivier Gosselin, argued that a sentence of 150 years would be counter to sentencing principles under Canadian law.
“All the debates that have taken place — social, political and scientific — all that is being called into question, and we say that we’re going to simply imprison people, who yes have committed serious murders, but we’re going to imprison them without any possibility of parole,” Gosselin said.
