I didn't say that. I want hockey players to wear helmets, and the league enforces those rules. Not our government.

There's a difference. You want to use medicare as a bludgeon to control what people are allowed to do. What is the limit? Will you allow people to get pregnant? Should people be allowed to engage in dangerous activities such as shovelling snow in winter?

You can bet that if the league didn't enforce the wearing of helmets, the government would....I certainly hope they would..

Shoveling snow.....I've promised myself I would not shovel snow anymore and I haven't for two years.

People smoke.
People eat poorly.
People drive motorcycles.
People go rock climbing.
People swim in pools.
People get pregnant and have kids.

What would you like to outlaw for the sake of lower medicare costs?

Your list is a good start, you can add river rafting, smoking dope, skate boarding, walking alone after dark, consorting with hookers.

That can be done safely if done sensibly, like take a one minute break for every two minutes of shovelling.

You realize that people are capable of riding bicycles and motorcycles without helmets and not being automatically injured, right?

And that it is possible to drive a car without wearing a seatbelt and not be automatically maimed?

I've been driving for well over fifty five years and in the first half of that time there were no seat belts. By today's standards,
the cars we drove fifty years ago were absolute pigs as far as handling and braking were concerned. We were probably better
drivers though.

Actually #Juan, there were seatbelts 50 years ago, they were standard equipment in the early 60 models. You're right about the drivers though, People are in far more of a hurry today to get somewhere, I wish there was an automatic $2000 fine & six month driving suspension for tailgating, it is one of the most pointless violations because if you do arrive safely you get there one second sooner.

Right JLM.
While seat belts were standard equipment in the sixties, mandatory use of seat belts
didn't come in until 1977 in B.C.

And yet, you survived.

You probably should be retroactively fined $57,000 for not wearing seatbelts before they were mandatory.

Hell, I knew people who connected the seat belts under the seats to keep them out of the way. One of my early cars
was a Volvo 544, one of the first cars with decent seat belts, and I used them.

$57,000.00 ???? was more than all of my cars cost in those days. In 1957 you could buy a new Chevy for about three grand.

But, you admitted that you drove without a seatbelt, and you didn't wind up paralyzed, dead, or maimed. Therefore, the justification you used for helmet laws is not valid.

I've seen seatbelts save lives. Hell, one probably saved mine - but I have also attended on scenes where the seatbelt was instrumental as the cause of death. Airbags would have been useful - had they been invented

Having ridden motorcycles since I was 11 years old (I am 69 now), and still riding a Honda Gold Wing today, I can speak a bit about riding bikes.

1. There is absolutely NO interference with hearing, when you wear any motorcycle helmet. That is a bunch of bull manure, by those that don't want to wear one.

2. There is no restriction of vision, by any properly fitting helmet.

3. Anyone that wishes to ride a motorcycle without a helmet should be allowed to do so, PROVIDED that they can show proof of a $1,000,000 accident insurance policy that covers themselves and any rider for injuries sustained in an accident.

I was taught to ride by a World War I Dispatch Rider. The first month, he taught me how to lay a bike down, without getting badly injured. As he taught me, "you always ride figuring that the people in cars are really TRYING to kill you".

I have ridden virtually every kind of bike made in the USA, Germany or Great Britain since the 1930's over the years. I have owned Indians, Harley's, BSA's, Norton's and Honda's.

Anyone that rides without full protection is an idiot in my opinion. I wear a full face helmet, and have since the 1960's. I have never had the slightest problem hearing others, seeing, etc.

I was under the impression that it would only be considered "shouting" if he had typed everything with the CAPLOCK button enabled. I didn't think that he was shouting, to be honest.

It is, after all, THEIR head.

Medicare should not be used as a bludgeon to force societal norms on people.

So if it is their head it should also be their dime to cover the care, not the taxpayer.

When I was younger I spent a lot of time on dirt bikes. I liked full face helmets. Still do. I also wear a helmet for snowboarding. Possibly the fact that I have had to wear a hard hat most of my working life has something to do with it but these have saved me from some nasty bumps over the years.

As soon as decent seat belts were introduced, I used them. I don't drive a motorcycle but I do wear a helmet while riding a bicycle, and
I made my kids use helmets on their bikes. We rode bikes for years before helmets were mandatory, and no, we weren't injured, but there, obviously were injuries, or they wouldn't have made them mandatory.
