I just got a list of the 50 most trusted Canadians in the mail today. Mike Holmes is #2, Stephen Harper is #8 and Michael Ignatieff is # 42. Who do you think are the most trusted?

Is it this list? Those You Know and Believe in | ReadersDigestCanada Seems similar to what your saying

It's quite nice that an environmental activist is at the top, followed by Canada's beloved Queen, and following that the former Defense Staff of Canada's glorious Armed Forces.

Bingo- I'm much more impressed with the #2 pick than I am with the first pick. In my mind Holmes is more of a doer.

Yeah, like i'm going to trust any politician after office of protocol at legislative sent me death threats and even got a call from an rcmp officer telling me he was on his way over to my house to shoot me. I had to call the police on the police and the government one day.

Most Trusted Canadians

Reader's Digest Canada recently conducted a survey of the top 50 most trusted Canadians. There were some, umh, interesting finalists.

Here's the highlights:

#1: David Suzuki: an environmental activist who's been advocating since the 60s. YAY!

#2: The Queen (of England): my only comment is that she's British... so I don' think she counts?

#5 Michael J. Fox

#8 Stephen Harper: the prime minister. Someone commented that "It's delightful that Canadians still recognize that, in spite of his Machiavellian tendencies, inside Stephen Harper is a well-meaning boy trying to get out." That's Delightful?!?! I'm sorry, that's disturbing! I must have been sick the day we were taught that it was ok for our leaders to lie and manipulite us so long as they were "well-meaning" at heart.

#12: Wayne Gretzky: a hockey player who was recently implicated in a gambling ring.

#14: Don Cherry: a hockey commentator. It truely is important to have someone you trust analyzing those games... it truely is.

#21: Alex Trebek: That's right, the guy from jeopordy. (as an aside, do you think after approximately 30 years of answering answers in the forms of questions, he's bored?)

#23: Justin Trudeau, son of former prime minister Pierre Trudeau

#27: Niel Young

#28: Elizabeth May: leader of the Green Party, and the second environmental activist on the list. YAY!

#30: Shania Twain: this just made me laugh

#40: Captain Kirk himself, William Shatner

and #50: Kiefer Sutherland: the actor from 24. I guess we trust him to save the TV world every year?

These varing responses beg the question: what exactly are these people trusted to do? I think, really, this is a list of who Canadians think are 'good people', and it's nice to see that we can be a forgiving bunch. Or else we're just really uninformed.

What do we expect? It was the Reader's Digest after all.

Lol. But apparently they asked readers for their opinion and they voted on it, so they are pretty reasonable picks.

I find it interesting that an environmentalist is at the top. I don't like any particular one though.
As for the comment from that blog post on the second pick (The Queen), she's not even "the Queen of England", the last one died centuries back, the successor title to that is "Queen of the United Kingdom", and even that no longer applies in the Canada, where she is titled "Queen of Canada", and can be considered Canadian, as she is by law.

Looks like the blog poster likes the fact that environmentalists are on the list.

I think trusted means being trusted to do things right in their particular profession, but I have my doubts about some of the people on the list. And it's probably a general list of good Canadians as well.

The latest poll is slightly different, Lizzie now ranks 4th. Mike Holmes overtook her. I've been reading R.D. for fifty years- I'd say it's pretty reasonable, although possibly a little more orientated to amusement than facts.

While taking the morning walk I got to mulling this subject over and have come to the conclusion that the list is somewhat flawed. Trevor Linden doesn't appear on the list while Conrad Black does. Any ideas on how that can be? (I got suspicious when my name didn't appear, but when I didn't see Trevor's that clinched it LOL )
