So, are you contending that people who feel they are underpaid have the right to demand their customers pay more than the advertised price for goods?

Absolutely not, as I previously stated, they should roll up their sleeves and get to work to bring themselves up to their imagined value.

Just taking this back on topic for a moment. I feel that the mandatory tip is good for the wait staff. They are going to be busting their humps for people from other countries that never tip and look down upon waitresses and waiters.
That is crap. A couple of good waiter in an establishment ant the rest ride their coattails. You go a good satisfactory job, get a tip. You don't and no tip.

Just wait till after, those prices for things that have been rising over the past year will not go back down.
Who will benefit from the Olys financially? A few businesses from the coast and maybe a little short term tourism for BC and Canada. The rest of us pay for it through the nose. I wish we could shake the money for the deficit from the morons that got us into it and the ones that continue with it, but politicians have arranged things so they are rarely held culpable for anything.
I hope the Olys does well, though.
Oh, and speaking of profit, you think the facts & figures of how much the Olys cost are hard to determine now, wait till the BS starts flying about whether and how much profit there is afterwards.

It's going to give everybody a lot to talk (and talk, and talk...) about for a long time.

I've heard the argument many times that it'll bring more people to live in Vancouver. What? They can barely handle what they have now - not enough water, not enough real estate, and the crappiest road/street system possibly in the world (with the current exception of Haiti) is going to support "more people?" How many...6, 7, 8?

I'm not exactly sure that their overhead rail system is all that great. I heard it's an expensive and dysfunctional system. Jobs? Where will all these new people get jobs from? And jobs that pay well enough for them to afford to live at the coast? Last I heard was that one should not pay any more than a third of their income for shelter. Good luck with that for those that move to Van. lol

Right - I forgot the mention their wonderful mass transit system and the bargain prices on places to live. Lots of reasons to not move there!

Exactly; if you don't like working for $10/hour, get another job; don't expect people to throw you cash because you draw a smiley face on the back of their bill. (By the way, about 10 years ago, I read a study that showed that waitresses who put a smiley face and a 'thank you' on the back of the bills get bigger tips, so when you see this now, you'll know it's being done because they are told to do it).

I do find that pneumatically-enhanced bar servers make an astounding amount in tips, the vast majority of which is not declared on income tax returns.

the influx of people to 'our' area on vancouver island never ceases to amaze me, this is a small city, with
very little in the way of factories, and the lumber mill
is now gone, but people keep coming in to live, where they
work I will never know, and they aren't all retirees, there
are lots of young families here too.

Vancouver is a wonderful city, I can understand why people
keep coming to live, and there is a big outskirt area, they
don't have to live in vancouver proper. Work can be found
all over the lower mainland, doesn't have to 'just' be in
vancouver. Climate is great, it's beautiful, recreation
all over the place, whatever one wants to do.

It's amazing how it can add up Talloola, when I lived there there were a lot employed at the base, both military and civilian, the hospitals would employ a lot, same with the school board and quite a number worked for Crown - Z but I guess that is something else now. There are scads of retail businesses between there and Cumberland and quite a few farms. Did Fields Sawmill shut down? When did that happen?

The population must be huge compared to 'when' you were here, and fields has been shut down for a few years now.
Yeah, the base is still going strong, but many of those
people, are from other parts of the country, and of course
they exchange back and forth constantly.

Comox doesn't look much different, but courtenay is
unrecognizable since we moved here in dec. of 83. And
now it seems we will have a cosco within the next two
years.
The old town of courtenay is the same, with many additions,
but they are keeping it looking like it always has, will
be like a heritage area in the future.
The huge change took place down on the corner of ryan and
the bi pass, and now a huge canadian tire, and super store, and many other businesses, and a modern look.
The newest commercial area which has large automotive dealerships now is up ryan across from crown isle golf course, and that is where cosco will be as well.

They are building a new co-op across from the base, and
will probably pull the old one down.
They also have a big rec center beside it.

There would be many low paying jobs, but not too many
high paying, except trades, contractors, and we also
have a big north island college up ryan road near lerwick.

We will also have a new hospital 2 or 3 years from now, they have
done all of planning, just have to find a site.

Yep, sounds like it's changed big time. WE moved away from Courtenay January 1984 and I haven't been there at all since 1999.

I think when we lived in Courtenay the population was about 9,000, Comox had about 4,000 and Cumberland had about 2,000.

We had been there a little over a month when you moved
away, we lived at 53 salsbury rd, right along the power
line, a couple of blocks from where 'you' said you lived, at the end of salsbury, if I remember correctly, have been in several areas since then.
My daughter used to walk the dog right past where you lived
and out to the big pipe and over to the river.

Yep, we lived at the corner of Rachel and Salzbury for about 18 months before that 6 years on Wentworth Rd. just past the cemetary.

Mandatory tip, that is in keeping with the Vancouver folks. Remember the government has those paid volunteers on loan to Vanoc. They are not only greedy they are changing the language. Tips have been voluntary until now of course, and the concept of a paid volunteer must be a Canadian tradition, nowhere else is the
general public that thick. I have no problem with tipping if the service is good but
be dammed if I will part with money if the server doesn't care about our table.

So you're cheap too?

Newsflash...many foreigners simply don't and won't tip regardless of the service they get.

It was implied from something I read; if that wasn't your point, why bring up the hourly wage?
I can see where you are "coming from", but I think you could have picked better analogies. Real estate agents aren't (generally speaking if they are any good) working for $10 an hour.

Only in the context that realtors aren't generally speaking working for minimum wage. The point I was making is if the person wants to earn more money, the should WORK for it.
