The difference is that with Facebook, you know when you post the sh-it it is public. There is no expectation that your cellphone location is public nor should there be. Most people could live without facebook. Not too many can do without their cellphones.

Yep, it their minds, man got along quite well (probably better) without them for about 3 million years. -:)

Northern Ontario,
This thread got me going into setting up "Find my IPhone" with Apple last night and do a few tests...
What I found out is that my phone location cannot be found if the device is OFF, Can also not be found even powered ON.... unless the 3G/Phone is switched on or the WIFI is enabled...because that is the only way the device can receive the query, and broadcast it's location to Apple.

Aside from being stolen, would there be any occasion when the 3G would not be on? I know with my iPhone the minute I no longer am in range of my wifi or a wifi that's stored on my phone, the 3G comes up. Also isn't there a 'last known location' thing with iCloud? To be honest I haven't looked into it too thoroughly myself, but I seem to remember seeing something about that.

As far as I could tell, It only shows the last location that a successful query was made....
Another thing I found....by accident...I have a set of Bluetooth headphones to listen to music when walking and it also made it easy in the winter to answer the phone....wouldn't have to dig in my pockets in the cold.. Walking out the door the other day, the music suddenly stops....turns out that I had left my phone on the kitchen table...

That got me to try and research for a Bluetooth tether for the phone that would give a warning if one gets too far away from the other....You get the implication...prevents you from loosing your phone...

They do exist...now the only thing I need if for someone reading this post, to suggest, a make or model to me...;-)

Cool beans.

I always have my phone with me as I gave up my land line quite some time ago. It just makes more sense to stick with the cell phone. So I'm in the habit of literally carrying it with me, from my computer desk to the end table on the sofa to the kitchen when I'm making dinner, it's actually become second nature. But there may be the odd time when I might inadvertently leave it behind somewhere, it happens, so I'm interested in how the find my phone app works.

If you should happen to loose it between the sofa cushions or something Icloud can send a signal to make it sound an alarm so you can hear where it is....but you need to be near a PC..
Something like this is what I'm looking for....
Philips - InRange Bluetooth smart leash for iPhone 5/4S & the new iPad - AEA1000/00 - InRange Bluetooth smart leash - App-enabled accessories - Sound and vision

Do you need to? Lol.

I do like my smart phone. I have at least one child, now, that lives far away and instead of arranging for a phone call when both he and I have an opportunity to talk, we can message each other about anything that comes up in our day to day lives. I like that feature. The email is handy, I don't need to wait until I get home or have to log in on the web to my hotmail to reply.

But just to have an emergency phone on the road or someway that you can be reached when you are away from home, certainly the older style Motorola's do the job.

yeah I hate to confess but, that's how I know I have put my phone down and left it behind: "Lost connection to phone" and she says it like she's angry with me. Then when I get near it: "welcome you are now connected, you can use your head set now. I can't function without an ear piece.
