Canadian anchor appears on screen in full veil to mock niqab-only TV

A Canadian TV anchor appeared in a full face-veil (known in Arabic as the niqab) to present his show on Canadian Sun News TV, ostensibly in a bid to poke fun at the newly-launched Egyptian channel, Maria TV, which features women clad only in the niqab, the Maan News Agency reported on Sunday.

Maria TV, which was launched on the first day of the holy month of Ramadan earlier in July, employs only women in niqab, even for behind-the-camera jobs.

Canadian anchor Michael Coren, dressed in black from head to toe, hosted a Muslim cleric from Toronto at the studio and discussed with him the idea of creating such a channel in Egypt.

Obviously Michael Coren is oppressed. You can tell by what he is wearing.

I support Michael Coren's right to wear a niqab.

He isn't oppressed. He had full freedom to choose to wear the niqab. He has the freedom to take it off. Saudi women do not have any choice in it. Even the comparison to Catholic nuns is absurd. Becoming a nun is a choice. The niqab is an extreme cloth prison, a literal and symbolic representation of how women under the various schools of Islamism repress, beat and treat women as less than human. It is a symbol of the hate crime against women that goes on in Saudi Arabia every single day.

I want to walk around naked, but oppressive laws in Canada force me to wear clothes. Therefore I am not truly free. Many countries in Africa would not prudishly force me to wear clothing.

If people were meant to wear clothes, we'd be born that way.

BTW, Saudi Arabia is an oppressive country. Wearing a burka, niqab, habit, ski mask... should be personal choice. Restricting what people can wear is oppressive.

The only exception is if the clothing is a safety or health hazard.

Every country has their own modesty standards, even Canada. Canada is less restictive than Saudia Arabia, but more restrictive than Spain where public nudity is legal.

This is the problem with news today, the Egyptians the Saudis and now Canadians more
into what people are wearing, or adhering to customs, (I said customs) this garment is
not part of the Muslim Faith and never has been. At any rate rather than informing the
public, the news outlets need to entertain us with antics.
No the women in the Middle East don't have a choice, and the reason is the fascist
governments of the region enforce autocratic rules on women because they have not
reached the level of civilization yet to know the difference its called ignorance.
The Catholic kick people out to the church because the clergy believes rape is not as
bad as abortion. The part about nuns, well I had an aunt that was a nun, and they gave
up the penguin suits a long time ago, for the most part.
We have a wonderful system in the west and we avoid calling it hypocrisy. WE condemn
China for its abuse of human beings. At the same time we buy all they can produce and
even send our factories over their putting our own people out of work and having people
abused for profit our corporate profit.
At the same time we condemn the Muslims for their abuses of women, we buy all the oil
we can get our hands on in many cases knowing the money they make will be spent on
buying guns to kill our soldiers trying to create a democracy where the women won't be
treated like animals. Does anyone see anything amiss here in all of this? Who the hell
cares about a hijab or what ever they call it? How much of a howl would go up if we
started flying Hitlers Nazi flag? How much of a howl would their be if we hung noose
like artifacts from trees in the Ole South? How much should we be appalled by this garment
being forced on women in any society? They are all symbols of oppression, wearing that
on TV he might as well have gone on the new in Black Face. There is nothing funny
about oppression period. I have a great sense of humor even a warped one at times
but I find nothing funny about portraying the symbols of prejudice period.
