U.S. manufacturing companies, long known for layoffs and shipping jobs overseas, now find themselves in a very different position: scrambling for scarce talent at home.
Large and small manufacturers of everything from machine tools to chemicals are scouring for potential hires in high schools, community colleges and the military. They are poaching from one another, retraining people who used to have white-collar jobs, and in some cases even hiring former prisoners who learned machinist skills behind bars.

Is it just me or does this need for skilled trades seem to cycle through every now and again? Typically right around the time of the beginning of recovery from a recession?

The problem here is that they are recovering from a recession, but it is different this time.
Not only are companies becoming aware they have to produce things in the home country
they are running into the fact that a lot of older workers had contracts and positions buy outs.
Now of course there is a shortage of skilled workers. This creates a different problem for
America. There are more and more jobs but no one has the skills to fill them as some have
retired or started small businesses of their own and are no longer seeking jobs that have in
fact disappeared until now. All those unemployed workers found retraining and are filling other
jobs. America will find itself behind in the skills sector for some time and this will hurt its
recovery. Serves them right

It is kind of cyclical, much like markets. Although I am finding more people like me that are completely pissed off with the garbage that comes from China. I am quite willing to pay more for things that work.

Serves who right, the American people or American industry? The people surely did not want to lose or have their jobs out sourced.

I'm quite willing to pay more as well, my choice of where to spend my hard earned dollars involves more than just price usually. I'm willing to pay little more to support local business or industry. Within reason and my ability of course.

Ironsides I was speaking of American Companies not the American workers who were shafted
by both their employers and the American Governments of Clinton, and Bush they were both a
major part of the downfall of American Industry. Have you ever noticed the American Government
can bring down the hammer on any company when it comes to South Africa or Cuba, but when
the Manufacturers and the captains of industry decide to dismantle the economy of the country
they can do nothing? The American people were a hayride, believing they could have all these
cheap goods at someone Else's expense and still maintain their standard of living. They voted for
the very people who stabbed them in the back. It is in fact largely their own fault however when I
made reference to "it serves them right' I was speaking of the companies not the workers

Nope! Not looking, but I thought it would be fun to look back and recall what types of work I have done in my life. Started off with Newspaper routes, worked as a farm hand as a teen, was a file clerk, did telecommunications, architectural and electrical drafting, telecommunication engineering, drafting supervisor and quality control, then I became a bush hippy and did some farming, was a tree planter and forest fire fighter, owned a News paper, had a graphics art company, ran a printing press, worked in the printing industry as a layout artist and pasteup man, sold advertising, was a garbage man, worked in a commercial greenhouse, authored seven books and illustrated 3 of them, have produced a large volume of fine art and a line of fine art cars, been a professional photographer, built both log and frame houses, commercial wild mushroom picker, a herbalist and alternative healer, been on several boards of directors, ran a teen club. I think I am forgetting a few but that covers most of it. I think I have earned my retirement and a good nights sleep. See y'all in da mornin'.

A lot of them could help themselves if they would WORK a couple of hours before asking when quitting time is, when pay day is and when can they start their holidays! :lol:

I've had a lot of experience with those too............they mainly lower morale, lower productivity and cost the outfit money.
