In an interview with The West Block’s Mercedes Stephenson, Copps (former Deputy Prime Minister Sheila Copps) said whoever emerges from the Liberals’ short leadership contest needs to be prepared to rebuild the party under a government led by Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre.

“You want somebody who’s prepared to stick it out for the long term, because some of the names that have been mentioned, like (former Bank of Canada Governor) Mark Carney, for example, I think he’d like to be the prime minister. I’m not so sure that he’d like to lead a process of rebuilding,” Copps said.

“Which may (?) be what we’re facing.”
Copps threw her support behind another candidate, Government House Leader Karina Gould….Isn’t she the one that last touched the last Liberal/NDP budget report…?…tabled it I guess, sort of? Then ran off?
She seems like Liberal Leadership material. I don’t recall Karina Gould throwing her hat in the ring though, or even announcing her intentions to.

No current cabinet ministers have announced bids to replace Prime Minister Trudeau, who has announced his intention to eventually resign, etc…
Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon confirmed Sunday morning he will not run to replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in the Liberals' ongoing leadership contest. His decision means there are still no current cabinet ministers who have announced a bid to take the party's top job, etc…

So far, no current cabinet ministers have announced a bid to replace Trudeau. Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly is not running, neither is Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc nor Transport Minister Anita Anand.

But Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne and Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson have said they're considering running for the top job, but neither have committed either, so whatever.

Kiss party status good bye.

So potentially… by Trudeau resigning sort of eventually, or promising to at a future date…the Libs might’ve picked up 2 seats from the NDP, the Conservatives might have picked up 1 seat again from the NDP. I’m still thinking, due to something like the above, the NDP is going to vote with the Liberals at the end of March for the liberal procurement bill, & then Parliament will be prorogued again, with the idea of getting the election date to happen somewhere on or between Oct 21st - 27th.

Nope. No way. It's suicide.

For whom? How much more suicide is it for either than a snap election? It might eventually be worse for the NDP if they’re thinking further than the next election (be it in May or July or later October), & it would probably be better off for the Liberals than not…& damn Canada.

Liberals are competitive in Atlantic Canada but were recently relegated to third place in Nova Scotia just like they were in Ontario and Quebec. In Ontario the provincial Liberals struggle for relevance. As the Parti Quebecois led polls in Quebec all 2024, the Quebec Liberal Party was an afterthought.

The Liberal brand does not exist in British Columbia, Alberta, or Saskatchewan. In Manitoba the Liberals hold one provincial seat. This trend will not be reversed by a federal Liberal leadership race held over the course of less than two months. No Liberal leadership contender can fix that.
When the majority of MPs rescind that confidence and desire an election, prorogation then serves only the political interests of the governing party, not Canada’s interests.
Canada is about to get a new prime minister, but that person will be chosen by rules that wouldn’t be acceptable in a general election. The next prime minister will be chosen not by the general electorate but by the Liberal Party of Canada, by their members using their rules.
1736772222279.jpeg
So far, former Montreal MP Frank Baylis and Nepean, Ont., MP Chandra Arya are the only ones to publicly state they intend to run for the job.

Former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney is expected to (but hasn’t committed to) launch his bid to replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau after signalling plans through his campaign team.

Former B.C. premier Christy Clark has said she is also debating (but hasn’t confirmed) whether to put her name forward, telling CBC Radio's "The House" she was "very seriously" considering it last week, but that she was disappointed with the short timeline for the race.

Freeland? No commitment there either.

Several high-profile cabinet ministers have announced they will not run, including Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon and Transport and Internal Trade Minister Anita Anand, who each bowed out over the weekend. They joined Finance Minister Dominic Leblanc and Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly to say they planned to focus on their portfolios instead.
But Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne and Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson have said they're considering running for the top job, but neither have committed either, so whatever.
So, so far it’s a race of two, with one dude a backbencher since 2015, & the other embroiled in sole source COVID contracts with the Lib’s usually reserved for friends and family…but Anita Anand knows nothing about that one, etc…😉

A commitment to commit? An expectation towards a commitment to commit? No rush. I’m assuming eventually some printer somewhere (Ottawa?) would sure like a list of names so he/she/they can print ballots for this lib-leadership election while the country waits.

“Sources” said to expect Freeland to officially make the announcement before U.S. president-elect Donald Trump is sworn in next Monday…oh yeah, Trump & America aren’t forced to wait on this, just Canada & all Canadians.
1736812040776.jpeg
(Only about a 200 seat spread between the Liberals & Conservatives at this point, so let’s drag this out…further…?)
1736812221494.jpeg
“Tight!! Bigly Tight!” The 25% tariffs Trump is threatening to impose would cause a massive economic upheaval and unemployment in this country.

The Liberals appear to have jumped on this unexpected gift from Trump. Several potential leadership candidates – Dominic LeBlanc and Melanie Joly for two – have declined the opportunity to run, saying they’re focused on fighting Trump’s tariffs.

(LeBlanc & Joly are trying to get access to the Donald before a united front of Provincial Premiers do…so this oddly makes sense…to make these two seem relevant somehow)

They’re sending a message that they’re putting country before personal ambition. In truth, the job of Liberal leader will have few benefits. Whoever leads the party will sit in Opposition for four years, if they’re lucky enough to keep their seat. Far from their professed noble pretensions, they’re keeping their powder dry for the next leadership campaign.
Nova Scotia MP Jaime Battiste (whom I’ve never heard of until just now) announced Monday that he wants to become the Liberal Party of Canada’s next leader and the country’s first Indigenous prime minister.
1736812802576.jpeg
The MP for Sydney-Victoria in Cape Breton was first elected in 2019 and says he’s been receiving an “outpouring of support” from Indigenous leaders and other Canadians encouraging him to run for the party’s leadership.
Battiste found himself on the receiving end of criticism for a comment he made last summer suggesting those living in Atlantic Canada, where the Liberals have been badly trailing the Opposition Conservatives, were “EI kind of folks.” He later he said his comments were “misinterpreted”)

As an MP who has had a relatively low profile among Canadians and Liberals, Battiste says he knows the challenge that lies before him, with the deadline for candidates to register set for January 23.

The party has set the entrance fee for candidates at $350,000, which would be paid in installments. Officials have not announced the specific dates of when the cash will be due, with spokesman Parker Lund saying it would be determined by a committee…eventually?

“I am fully aware of the complexity of raising $350,000 over the next 12 days.” In instalments over the next 12 days?

Anywho, as a change from Trudeau & his Montreal riding, due to Lib tradition:

With Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly and Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon not running for the leadership, Champagne is seen as the last great Quebec and francophone hope in the race to replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau who was the last great Quebec and Francophone hope and still hasn’t stepped down, but has committed to resigning eventually.

Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne will announce whether he plans to run in the Liberal leadership race before noon Tuesday at a Canadian Club event in Toronto. Holy Shit! An actual timeframe? Maybe that’s a misprint.

“There’s nothing happening, it’s surprising and disappointing. Because without Minister Joly in the race, you would think Champagne would have a serious advantage in being able to win a large majority of ridings in Quebec,” said a Liberal source who was not at Liberalty to speak openly. Libs would probably come in second or third behind the Bloc in Quebec.
1736813942433.jpeg
Following his speech at the Canadian Club, Champagne will meet with the Burlington Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday afternoon alongside his cabinet colleague and Burlington MP Karina Gould, who is also considering a leadership run and is expected to make her intentions known soon.

Conservative operatives are being blamed for circulating decade-old photos showing potential Liberal leadership candidate Mark Carney with convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell at a 2013 British festival.

The images, which emerged on social media Monday from an anonymous account, show the former Bank of Canada governor and his wife Diana Fox Carney with Maxwell at the upscale Wilderness Festival in Oxfordshire, England.

Or…or it’s Liberal insiders, perhaps from one of the 108 potential competitors for the liberal leaders crown, or one of their staff? Liberal political in fighting could be pretty dirty I’m supposing.

In an interview with The Daily Show host Jon Stewart, Carney didn’t definitively say he would launch a campaign for the leadership in the wake of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau but he did say that a “hypothetical” outsider candidate was better positioned to run for the job while U.S. president-elect Donald Trump is threatening tariffs on Canadian goods.

Carney isn’t an outsider candidate to Trudeau though, not even theoretically.

National Post has reported last week that Carney is likely to launch his campaign later this week, along with former B.C. Premier Christy Clark.
“Wild hypothetical. Let’s say the candidate wasn’t part of the government. Let’s say the candidate did have a lot of economic experience. Let’s say the candidate did deal with prices. Let’s say the candidate had a plan to deal with the challenges in the here and now,” said Carney.

“You sneaky… you’re running as an outsider,” said Stewart.

“I am an outsider,” said Carney.

Wow…just like Christy Clark never had a Conservative membership…so good luck with that story.

In response to a question about how Carney would be “left holding the carbon tax bag,” which Stewart argued was “not politically feasible,” Carney hinted that he would target the oil and gas industry with climate policy.

“Almost 30 per cent of our emissions from Canada come from the production and shipment of oil to the United States,” said Carney. “So part of it is cleaning that up, getting those emissions down, more than changing, in a very short period of time, the way Canadians live.”

Former B.C. premier Christy Clark is out of the race to replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, just days after she had to walk back a claim that she was never a member of the Conservative Party. Oh well.
