A federal (bye-bye) election pamphlet being distributed right now features a Palestinian flag on the front, not a Canadian flag.

On the back, the candidate in question promises to push for an immediate ceasefire and tells voters to “send a strong message to Ottawa to stop the genocide in Gaza.”

Again, this was a piece of literature handed out in Canada, during a Canadian election to elect a member of Canada’s Parliament.

No one is surprised that this flyer is being distributed by the NDP.

Craig Sauve is the NDP candidate seeking to win the Montreal-area riding of LaSalle-Émard-Verdun in the Sept. 16 byelection. It’s an odd move by the NDP candidate. According to Statistics Canada, the area doesn’t have a very large Muslim or Arab population, coming in at 5,735 Muslims out of a population of 107,564 in the last census — that works out to 5.3%.

The NDP is facing plenty of outrage online over the flyer, which is no surprise — you can find people online outraged that that sun rises in the morning.

The party isn’t backing away from the flyer, in fact, they are defending it strongly and strangely.

“Craig Sauvé included a maple leaf on the leaflet in question, and frequently poses with the Canadian flag and Quebec flags — both of which he deeply loves and respects,” the party said in a statement sent Sunday, etc…

“It’s ludicrous to suggest that when a politician is seen with another flag it’s unCanadian, whether that’s the Ukrainian flag, Israeli flag, Palestinian flag or other nations.”

A Maple Leaf next to the NDP logo superimposed over the Palestinian flag which is dominating the campaign literature doesn’t negate the fact that he’s campaigning for a seat in Canada’s Parliament with a foreign flag. It’s not just Sauve being seen with a foreign flag — he’s profiled under it, the foreign flag is at the top.

Strangely, the NDP sent four photos to show that politicians are seen with foreign flags.

One is Stephen Harper from his 2007 visit to Australia where he addressed their Parliament. Canada’s then Conservative prime minister is standing in front of a podium with Australia’s coat of arms on it and Australian flags behind him.

In two others, Harper is featured in Hungary and the United States with their flags while visiting those countries after he left office.

In the one photo of current Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, he’s seen standing on Parliament Hill this past winter with two men taking part in a rally to support Israel who are holding an Israeli flag.

None of that is the same as campaigning for a seat in Canada’s Parliament under a foreign flag. The many Canadians of all political stripes who are offended by this are right to be so and to ask if the NDP will put Canada and Canadian interests first.

“The NDP has been crystal clear on our position in support of a ceasefire and the release of all hostages because we believe in protecting both Israeli and Palestinian lives,” the party said in their statement defending the flyer.

They went on to attack Poilievre and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, etc…

For starters, whatever influence the Canadian government, never mind an opposition MP, might have over Israel’s war policy, it is something approximating nil. Why would Jerusalem ever listen to Ottawa, given how the government keeps siding with Hamas?

Hamas uses its own population as human shields and embeds itself in schools, mosques and hospitals, and yet, the ratio of civilians to combatants killed in Gaza is among the lowest of any recent conflict, so why the position(s) in a Canadian bye bye-election?

Joly and Trudeau have already done their utmost to torch what’s left of Canada’s relationship with Israel, and they are putting relations with the U.S. at risk, in order to gain leverage, it would seem, in a byelection that will have no practical effect on how Parliament is run. Analysts are looking to the byelection in Manitoba that will also be held Monday as an indication of the strength of the NDP and its leader Jagmeet Singh. The NDP has won ten of the last 11 elections in Winnipeg’s Elmwood-Transcona riding with the Conservatives taking the other.

In the Montreal area, those wanting to try to read into the outcome of the byelection may have to pull an all-nighter, as a close race could mean late results.

If the limited number of polls is to be believed, the byelection is shaping up as a three-way race, with the Liberals, NDP and the Bloc Quebecois in contention. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was in the Montreal area today and spoke of what he says is at stake.

“This election is going to be an important moment of choice for Canadians, and indeed, Montrealers,” he said. (Lets hope so)

Trudeau mainly focused his attacks on the NDP, which is fielding a high-profile candidate in the riding, Craig Sauvé, a longtime city councillor, not to be confused with the Bloc Québécois candidate Louis-Philippe Sauvé who’s not the NDP candidate.

“I know there are a lot of people disappointed with the NDP playing simple politics, walking away from progressive values and from the fight against climate change,” said Trudeau.

Electors say their key issues are not climate change policy but cost of living, housing and health care, but good job keeping the finger on the pulse there Justin.

Analysts say this could be a crucial moment for Liberals, as a loss could signal they are losing even their core base, especially in the wake of the party’s byelection loss to the Conservatives in the stronghold of Toronto-St-Paul’s in June.

He intends to fight even if the Liberals lose another stronghold in Montreal in Monday’s by-election.

With at most one year left for Mr. Trudeau to turn things around before the next election, The Globe and Mail spoke with 22 Liberals, including five cabinet ministers, senior political staff, former cabinet ministers, current and former Liberal MPs and veteran campaign strategists.

They paint a portrait of a Prime Minister who believes he performs best as an underdog and is convinced he can claw his way back into contention…so that’s been the strategy for the last few years? It’s almost making sense in a machiavellian fantasy absolutely bullshit sort’a way…not.

The Globe is not naming the sources so they could speak freely without fear of repercussion from the Prime Minister’s Office.

Mr. Trudeau’s determination and his team’s belief it can reverse course on more than a year of negative indicators require a stubborn optimism. Despite being widely counted out by political watchers both inside and outside the Liberal tent, Mr. Trudeau’s senior team of staff and ministerial allies say he can win a fourth mandate.
