so whats the plan tonington..legalize it and lets see.....

there is a reason it's ilegal dude...and if something is not to be done you get to go to jail...it's the only game...i say clean up the streets and put them in non criminal jails....sort of hospitols with bars....

Perhaps the laws should be designed to deal with abuse rather then use.

I'm not the government, and by no means am I an expert in addictions counseling, though I know these three things:

1. Criminalization has not decreased problem drug use.
2. Maintaining that criminalization when it is shown to not work, is an assault on one's liberties for a personal choice.
3. Treating a person as a sick or diseased individual will be far better than as a criminal.

Why maintain a flawed model? What possible good could that do to help ease this situation?

Harper's recent plan is basically an echo of the American political system. Which party is tougher on drugs? Getting tough sells well, but does squat.

Thought I would add this.

If it is to be 'legalized', then I would expect nothing short of months of expert testimony, from different professionals from around the world to be called upon before our Parliamentarians make the necessary changes. That is what the Commons committees are there for.

To me when someone says "I'm tough on X" I just assume they are sadistic and want to punish people for X. I don't believe they actually want to try to reduce the rate X occurs at. The laws and discussions that generally follow this statement provides ample grounds for my reasoning.

Well as the Great William Blake said and i loosly quote him....
Prisons are built on bricks of the law
brothels are built on bricks of religion.

he also said something to the effect that people with vey little or no desire make laws for people with much desire....

I whole heartedly agree with the fact that a heroin user is not a criminal for useing heroin and it does seem hypocritacal of me to say slam in jail...although i did say a hospitol type setting jail and to really get tough on these people for their and society's own good.....it is impssible to shoot up 150 bucks worth of heroin a day without a job if yer not invovlved in some sort of actual criminal activity......

The things is no one here and thats a big no one here has offered viable solutions other than claim they are not criminals.....to knock my stance and offer none other is just border line trolling...LOL....think about it...it is a forum...slamming me for my ideas in thread after thread and me asking you to give your solution from where i sit is semi trolling....

lol...take it from a troll lol!!!!i know trolling when i see it...lol...maybe yer all psychotic trolls and don't know it....

i'm reporting you to the troll police...yer all criminals...:x

Perhaps Doc it's because the solution you ask for has not yet been defined. I can give you a thousand solutions. No solution will ever be appropriate without defining what it is you want to fix. Be precise.

I respect your response ...truly do....If you read over the thread i don't want anything but harder laws and different style prison time for this sort of thing...someone jumped in and just blew their wad and gave no solution whilst giving inuendo against what i posted....the whole expierence thing...trolling basically...it ticks me off that they would .......this is being hijacked in me head....lol...not going there....

To be precise i would love the others to do as you just did..say whats on your mind without bafflegab.

You admitted something i've said before....we as a society have not come up with the solution....But i say with the animalistic state that the present society throws the user into...we should treat them like a rabid dog...quaratine them help them....clean em up big time.....

this half baked toss em in with hard core criminals is of no use....

But you got to realize during the Israeli war in the 60's hashish from the region seemed to be allowed to be sold in Montreal.....

During the Russian war in Afghanistan hashish and heroin seemed to be allowed to be sold in the west to fund the Mouhajdeem....sp....

Now the states are back in the opium trade big time....99% of any Afghany i'm close too will say the americans are geting their take on the trade....it's suspected the funds go to cia operations...it's suspected this is good for cia who don't like to tell congress what they need billions for.....

The article says "legalize"

Granted. But as concerned citizens, we value the betterment of all of our citizens. Jail is not the solution for this problem as it is a sickness, not a crime (or at least shouldn't be). Alcoholism is a sickness as well and it is treated as such. I think most would agree that this is the proper course.

They say half the cost of illegal drugs is markup due to risk. 50% tax rate, wow, what an El Dorado for the the goverment. It's either legalize them all or outlaw all including alcohol and tobacco.

Would you believe more like 500% (no link just an educated estimate and a 5th amendment plea)

I believe the sales network should be targeted and the hell busted out of it while, at the same time, a legal network is put in place - similar to alcohol control boards. The user should not be treated as a criminal. He/she, as a responsible adult, is responsible for his/her own activity. We trust 'em with booze don't we? When it becomes a problem - and for some, it always does - the same rules should apply. Yes, it will be abused - illegally or legally. To be abused in a controlled environment isn't supporting your local crime syndicate.
