Milk poured down Britain's kitchen sinks each year creates a carbon footprint equivalent to thousands of car exhaust emissions, research shows.

Scientists say the 360,000 tonnes of milk wasted in the UK each year creates greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 100,000 tonnes of CO2. The study by the University of Edinburgh says this is the same as is emitted by about 20,000 cars annually.

yes, there's more

Wasted milk is a real drain on our resources, study shows

I see the environmental movement is grasping at straws again. I agree it would and
is a problem but it can hardly be an earth altering event. I think the biggest threat to
Global Warming is the hot air created by the fund raising efforts of the environmental
movement.

I don't think it's the environmental movement grasping at straws, I think it's the scientists trying to come up with a way to limit milk being dumped, so they jump on whatever bandwagon they can find as a justification, no matter how bizarrely desperate the link is.

You see this in everything. Products being marketed with the most ridiculous 'environmental' message, because that's what's hot these days. Same concept, if you can tag your cause of the day onto global warming, in whatever far-fetched manner, you get all kinds of extra publicity.

20,000 cars/year worth of C02 emissions is significant, but I'm sure the number #1 priority (at least when it comes to global warming) is to reduce emissions to the targets each nation sets. Considering our environment minister is a complete failure, I don't think we'll be hitting our targets, regardless of how much milk we avoid wasting, roflmao

I wonder if the thousands of litres dumped on the ground each year, by dairy farmers avoiding being fined for producing more than their quota, so the cost of milk can be artificially kept high, does to the environment.

While your two car family keeps on happily emitting...

Point of order, that was a poorly written press release. The greenhouse gases aren't 'created' by dumping milk down the drain. They were created by the enteric bacteria while the cows were producing the milk that eventually gets wasted. The greenhouse gases were created whether the milk was drank, or not.

Like TP said, it's just a different way that some scientists decided to highlight waste.

It used to be that the old folks saved money wherever they could, wouldn't walk past a penny on the ground. Maybe in the future, wasted energy quantified by carbon dioxide or something equivalent will be like the old man who doesn't stop to pick up the penny. Energy saved is energy earned? Doesn't have quite the same ring to it does it?

Milk wouldn't be poured out if weirdos didn't make a fuss. Outdated milk used to go back to the dairy to be made into ice cream, cheeses, sour cream, cottage cheese etc..

Tonington hit the nail. However, the point is worth pursuing. One other calculation made a few years ago is that the amount of water wasted by Canadians keeping their taps running while cleaning their teeth "cretaes" emissions equivalent to that of 100,000 cars annually.

The message is what is important. All the wasteful ways added up reach a very signifcant figure. It is something that individuals can do in the cause.
