Back in the 1930s, a real smart American said "The American political process consists of the two parties each engaging in a process to pick the worst man they can offer, and then the general public picking the worse of the two to be president."
There is a certain "logic" (formula) in that....... and it gets proven rather often at election time.
the dems did have some excellent candidates.......but MONEY is a big factor in US politics.
