I've posted a few threads lately abuot assorted educational gripes, I figured this newest one may as well start seeing the beginning of a new thread, since, on its own it's pretty minor.

My daughter just came home with the spelling list used to teach G.W.Bush....

Try and teach a kid to say nuclear properly when it's tacked onto that spelling list.

Nuclear ... 3 syllables. Bush gives it three syllables, but he's got it all mixed up with nucular. It's like people that pronounce realtor as realator. I don't know where they get the extra vowel. Then ... there's millimeter, centimeter, and kilo-meter ... pronounced by many as kilohmtr. Another one is coyote. Two syllables, but how many give it 3? Too many. Or porcupine. That's a u, but somehow, people say porkypine.

exactly... this book gives a whole list of 'ular' words, so how do you want to say 'nuclear' when you get to the bottom of the list? I can't help but wonder if whoever wrote the text doesn't realize the right pronunciation.

At least I'm not the only one that can't spell. I noticed that most newspapers make more spelling mistakes than I do. Lots of teachers as well.

Haven't heard it much lately but used hear "filum" a lot for "film".

Try these - Wednesday, probably, comfortable. BTW - Coyote does have three syllables - It is derived from Spanish and every vowel is pronounced. The Spanish got it from the Aztecs - coyotl.

So far as the thread is concerned there are just about as many ways to reform education as there are teachers. Educational reform is one of the favourite topics of school staff rooms. The problem is that although every teacher knows that there is something wrong with the system, reform is in the hands of the Department of Education; which is one of the most conservative of institutions. It is my experience that almost every educational measure introduced by the Department of Education is poorly thought out and frequently one that has been tried and failed elsewhere. Of course, I am only talking about Alberta. Those in other provinces may have different experiences.

I agree that the problem with the system starts at the top, but I think the problem is that the guy at the top shifts out every 3ish years, and the new guy thinks he has the best idea, or he needs to make change to prove he did his job, or who knows ... whatever it is, it happens every 3 years and does not improve anything.
