Doesn't happen so quickly.

You're looking at 20 years to be on equal footing with fossil fuels.

But everyone knows this already, so it's just a matter of watching the oil industry continue to erode as demand continues to weaken.

In 20 years oil sands will be up to 10million bbl a day and up another 7 from conventional oil.

They shouldn't be punished for a problem they didn't create, nor should they be deprived of opportunities for clean growth that developed nations are now pursuing."
Many of those "nations" have been around since Europeans were still living in caves. If they haven't figured out civilization yet, f*ck 'em! It's not our job to drag them to it.

Reality and perceived reality are two diffrent things.

And you actually buy that drivel?
Once again, ideology beats out common sense.
Here's why they're doing it. It is indeed for their bottom line but unlike you and I, businesses get to write-off their utility use as part of the cost of doing business.
However, it's even better to eliminate that cost altogether AND be able to write-off your solution to it.

In Ontario though, the average homeowner would have to be a complete idiot having solar or wind power generation installed on their rooftops today.
A) You won't be saving the environment, the latest propaganda piece from your Ontario overlords states that Ontario's power generation is now 99.7% emissions free.
B) You'll still be getting a bill from Hydro One, even if you self-generate 100% of the energy you used.

And finally, eliminating the use of fossil fuels for power generation pretty much kills any flexibility you had in the system. While nuclear and hydroelectric are great for supplying solid base load generation and lots of it, they're lousy for tweaking output up and down to meet constantly changing power demands.

There's no drivel or ideology.

It's plain economics.

Oil prices so low means that business is bad for exporters and investment in renewables continues to go up.

Yep, just like the temporary massive increase in recycling technology a few years back. Lot's of investments made there too. Some companies saw their share prices increase astronomically in 18 months. Once company had an initial offering selling for $5 and change a share. Less than 18 months later the shares were just under $50 per. The company is no longer with us. Same thing happened to a lot of other companies within the industry.

Once again, fossil fuels provide the flexibility a modern electrical grid requires. And you are correct, it's plain economics as far as businesses go. As a business, would you rather pay hydro bills and then write them off at the end of the fiscal year? Or would you rather eliminate the cost altogether while getting to write-off your solution to hydro independence?
I know what direction I'd go in and it would have nothing to do with some altruistic need to "save the environment".

I doubt that he flies economy.

But then again, he's not any different from any of our other PMs

Yes, notice how much each succeeding completely free Canadian Prime Minister seems to be plucked from the same cardboard carton. This one will help to execute the greatest economic disaster ever recorded by history and the following slaughter to usher in the fix. The PMO can and does accomodate any size and colour of operator as long as it's a certified member of the invisable hand.

Dutch Disease

Oh, and a fun picture involving the Feds... Pretty good prediction of what the future of renewables looks like

Mulcair continues to be vindicated about Dutch Disease as the loonie follows the price of oil which benefits manufacturing.

He was 100% correct on that one.

Just a structural question here... In terms of centuries, what is the customary time-frame for a country to remain recognized as developing ?
It is based on your ability to kill them in greater numbers than they can kill you. One is developing the other is declining.
