Barack Obama staffers express concerns about 'frail' Joe Biden

Worries over Joe Biden’s age-related political struggles are not going away.

Even staff alumni from former president Barack Obama’s administration are speaking out publicly about their concerns.

Former Obama speechwriter Jon Favreau said voters already viewed Biden, 81, as old and said it’s now time for the president to get in front of the issue.

“If you watch Joe Biden speak, oftentimes he sounds frail, and he sounds more frail than he used to, even in 2019 and 2020,” Favreau said on the Pod Save America podcast, according to the U.K.’s Daily Mail. “The voice sounds frail, and he shuffles more because of the arthritis in his back.”

Favreau said that polls show as many as 80% of Americans are concerned about Biden’s age and said it’s not just a media-driven narrative.

“In the last NBC poll, more people were concerned about Biden’s age than Trump’s f****** 91 felony counts,” he said.

Getting on camera more would be a good first step, Favreau said.

“When world events seem like they are overtaking him, and he’s not out there enough forcefully, that’s what’s getting people concerned,” he said.

Former Obama speechwriter Jon Lovett agreed, saying Biden’s team needed to get the president out in public more to show his mental and physical abilities, even if they’re worried about the chance of more mistakes.

“I’m sure that going out there more means more missteps … more gaffes that start circulating but if you don’t view Biden being out there more as a net-positive then the argument he shouldn’t be running is right,” he said.

Somewhere in my reading this morning, I came across a statement from Trump claiming that Biden should have ate some kind of test to see if he is competent to run again. Too bad he didn’t think of that before the last election. But, to make it fair, everyone running for Prez should have to take the test and compare results.

More than 6 in 10 U.S. adults doubt Joe Biden's mental capability: Poll

WASHINGTON — A poll finds that a growing share of U.S. adults doubt that 81-year-old President Joe Biden has the memory and acuity for the job, turning his coming State of the Union address into something of a real-time audition for a second term.

Roughly 6 in 10 say they’re not very or not at all confident in Biden’s mental capability to serve effectively as president, according to a new survey by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. That’s a slight increase from January 2022, when about half of those polled expressed similar concerns.

By the same token, nearly 6 in 10 also say they lack confidence in the mental capability of former President Donald Trump, the 77-year-old Republican front-runner.

For many voters, this year’s election looks like a showdown for the world’s toughest job between two men who are well beyond the standard retirement age. The next president will probably need to steer through global conflicts, fix domestic emergencies and work with a dysfunctional Congress.

Biden is likely to address those challenges and more in his State of the Union address on Thursday as he tries to convince Americans that he deserves another term.

Going into the big event, just 38% of U.S. adults approve of how Biden is handling his job as president, while 61 are much likelier than independents (20 to favor his performance. But there’s broad discontent on the way Biden is handling a variety of issues, including the economy, immigration and foreign policy.

About 4 in 10 Americans approve of the way Biden is handling each of these issues: health care, climate change, abortion policy and the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. But people are less satisfied by Biden’s handling of immigration (29%) and the economy (34%) — all of which are likely to come up in the speech before a joint session of Congress.

Nearly 6 in 10 (57%) Americans think the national economy is somewhat or much worse off than before Biden took office in 2021. Only 3 in 10 adults say it’s better under his leadership. Still, people are more optimistic about the state of their own bank accounts: 54% say their personal finances are good.

Many respondents to the survey were deeply pessimistic about their likely choices in November because of age and the risk of cognitive decline.

Paul Miller, himself 84, said Biden is just too old — and so is Trump.

“He doesn’t seem to have the mental whatever to be a president,” Miller said of Biden. He added that Trump is “too old, too, and half crazy.”

The retiree from Carlisle, Pennsylvania, said he voted for Trump in 2020 but he wouldn’t do so again.

“I don’t think I’m going to vote for either one of them,” he said. “I hope somebody else is available.”

The president faces added pressure about his age after unflattering descriptions of him contained in a special counsel’s report that did not recommend criminal prosecution of Biden for his mishandling of classified records, unlike Trump who was indicted for keeping classified material in his Florida home. The report said that Biden’s memory was “hazy,” “fuzzy,” “faulty,” “poor” and had “significant limitations.”

Biden has tried to deflect concerns by joking about his age and taking jabs at Trump’s own gaffes. Yet the president’s age is a liability that has overshadowed his policy achievements on infrastructure, manufacturing and addressing climate change.

About one-third of Democrats said they’re not very or not at all confident in Biden’s mental capability in the new survey, up from 14% in January 2022. Only 40% of Democrats said they’re extremely or very confident in Biden’s mental abilities, with approximately 3 in 10 saying they’re “somewhat” confident.

And in a major risk for Biden, independents are much more likely to say that they lack confidence in his mental abilities (80.

Republicans are generally more comfortable with Trump’s mental capabilities than Democrats are with Biden’s. In the survey, 59% of Republicans are extremely or very confident that Trump has the mental abilities to be president. An additional 20% are somewhat confident, and 20% are not very or not at all confident.

But if there is one thing Democrats and Republicans can agree upon, it’s that the other party’s likely nominee is not mentally up to the task. About 9 in 10 Republicans say Biden lacks the mental capability to serve as president, while a similar share of Democrats say that about Trump.

Part of Biden’s problem is that his policies have yet to break through the daily clutter of life.

Sharon Gallagher, 66, worries about inflation. She voted for Biden in 2020, but believes he has not done enough for the economy. She also feels Trump is a bit too quick to anger. The Sarasota, Florida, resident said she doesn’t have the bandwidth to really judge their policies.

“I don’t pay enough attention to politics to even know,” Gallagher said. “I have grandchildren living with me and I have children’s shows on all day.”

Justin Tjernlund, 40, from Grand Rapids, Michigan, said Biden “seems like he’s mostly still there,” but even if he was in decline he has “a whole army of people to help him do the job.” Trjenlund said he voted for Trump in 2020 and plans to do so again because the Republican is “interesting” and “refreshing.”

Still, because of both candidates’ ages, Greg Olivo, 62, said he plans to focus on Vice President Kamala Harris and whomever Trump, if he’s the nominee, picks for a running mate.

“Keep a close eye on the vice president,” said the machinist from Valley City, Ohio, who voted for Biden in 2020 and would do so again. “Because that person will probably be the president in four years, one way or another.”

Florida woman is sentenced to a month in jail for selling Biden’s daughter’s diary

Two people have pleaded guilty in a scheme to peddle a diary and other items belonging to President Joe Biden's daughter Ashley to the conservative group Project Veritas, prosecutors said Thursday, Aug. 25, 2022.
NEW YORK (AP) — A Florida mother was sentenced Tuesday to a month in prison and three months of home confinement for stealing and selling President Joe Biden’s daughter’s diary four years ago to the conservative group Project Veritas.

Aimee Harris was sentenced in Manhattan federal court by Judge Laura Taylor Swain, who called the Palm Beach, Florida, woman’s actions “despicable.”

Harris pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge in August 2022, admitting that she received $20,000 of the $40,000 that was paid by Project Veritas for personal items belonging to the president’s daughter, Ashley Biden.

Project Veritas, founded in 2010, identifies itself as a news organization. It is best known for conducting hidden camera stings that have embarrassed news outlets, labour organizations and Democratic politicians.

A tearful Harris apologized for enabling Ashley Biden’s private writings to be sold after she found the diary and other items at a friend’s Delray Beach, Florida, home in 2020, where prosecutors said Ashley Biden believed her items were safely stored after she temporarily stayed there in spring 2020.

“I do not believe I am above the law,” Harris said after a prosecutor urged a prison sentence following her failure to appear at numerous sentencing dates on the grounds that she was consumed with caring for her two children, ages 8 and 6.

“I’m a survivor of long term domestic abuse and sexual trauma,” she told the judge.

With a lawyer for Ashley Biden observing from the courtroom’s spectator section, Harris apologized to the president’s daughter, saying she regrets making her childhood and life public.

In announcing the sentence, Swain noted that Harris and a co-defendant, Robert Kurlander, of nearby Jupiter, Florida, had first tried unsuccessfully to sell Ashley Biden’s belongings to then-President Donald Trump’s 2020 presidential campaign.

The judge said that Harris, besides being motivated by greed, had hoped to impact the nation’s political landscape.

Kurlander, who has not yet been sentenced, and Harris, had each pleaded guilty to conspiracy to transport stolen property across state lines.

Defense attorney Anthony Cecutti urged no prison time, citing his client’s traumatic life and her efforts to care for her children while recovering from abuse and violence.

“She carries the shame and stigma of her actions,” he said.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Sobelman urged a prison sentence, saying Harris had exhibited a “pattern of disrespect for the law and the justice system.”

“Ms. Harris is not the victim in this case,” Sobelman said. “Ms. Biden is the victim in this case.”

He said Harris in the summer of 2020 had stolen Ashley Biden’s diary, a digital storage card, books, clothing, luggage and “everything she could get her hands on” in the hopes she “could make as much money as she could.”

“She wanted to damage Ms. Biden’s father,” he said.

Harris was told to report to prison in July. As she left the courthouse, she declined to speak.

The lawyer for Ashley Biden also declined to comment, though he submitted a letter to the judge on his client’s behalf a day earlier that was not immediately put in the court record.

Michael Moore warns Joe Biden his support for Israel will cost him presidency

Activist-filmmaker Michael Moore warned that President Joe Biden’s support of Israel in the country’s war with Hamas is costing him voters.

Speaking on his podcast Rumble with Michael Moore, he insisted that Biden would lose to Donald Trump — like Hillary Clinton did in 2016 — because voters will choose to stay home rather than cast ballots.

“President Biden, you could end this now. You know it’s wrong, I know you know it’s wrong. I know I sound like a broken record and I know you know you’re going to lose this election, in part because too many people are going to stay home.”

Moore noted Clinton lost by two votes per precinct in Michigan.

“Two for the whole state. Two!” he exclaimed. “And that’s what’s going to happen to you.”

Moore noted that young people want the conflict in the Middle East to end and are “sick” of what Biden is doing.

“They don’t support it, and they don’t support you,” he said. “And now they’re sick of you, sick of what you’ve been doing. And you can’t see it.”

Moore previously slammed Biden over his support for Israel stance, and said the Michigan uncommitted vote, which he helped organize, was an effort to “save Biden from himself.”

Last month, he told MSNBC that Biden’s support of the “massacre” in Gaza is “essentially guaranteeing that thousands and thousands of Americans are going to stay home and not vote on election day.”

He added at the time that while Trump won’t be getting their votes either, it’s how the former president “could win.”

During his podcast, Moore implored Biden to be a “politician, for once.”

He explained: “What does a politician want most? To get reelected. Why are you guaranteeing possibly losing the election and Trump being back in the White House? What is fricking wrong with you?”

Joe Biden claims uncle possibly eaten by cannibals during Second World War

Joe Biden claims his uncle was possibly eaten by cannibals during the Second World War, conflicting with military records of the event.

The U.S. president suggested twice on Wednesday that Ambrose Finnegan’s death was at the hands of a flesh-eating tribe in New Guinea after his plane crashed during the war 80 years ago.

“He got shot down in an area where there were a lot of cannibals at the time,” Biden, 81, told reporters after visiting a war memorial in Scranton, Pa.

“They never recovered his body, but the government went back when I went down there and they checked and found some parts of the plane.”

Biden repeated the claim later during a speech to steelworker union members in Pittsburgh.

“He got shot down in New Guinea and they never found the body because there used to be — there were a lot of cannibals, for real, in that part of New Guinea,” Biden said.

However, according to Pentagon records for missing military members, 2nd Lt. Ambrose J. Finnegan died in a plane crash in the Pacific Ocean near New Guinea.

On May 14, 1944, Finnegan was a passenger on a military plane that departed from Momote Airfield on Los Negros Island and was headed to Nadzab Airfield.

“For unknown reasons, this plane was forced to ditch in the ocean off the north coast of New Guinea,” the military record says.

The report said both engines failed and the plane nosedived into the water.

“Three men failed to emerge from the sinking wreck and were lost in the crash. One crew member survived and was rescued by a passing barge. An aerial search the next day found no trace of the missing aircraft or the lost crew members.”

Biden brought up his uncle’s war death in response to Donald Trump not visiting a military cemetery near Paris in 2018 after calling the dead servicemen “suckers” and “losers.”

“Suckers and losers? The man doesn’t deserve to have been the commander in chief of my son,” Biden told the Pittsburgh audience.

A special counsel’s report in February described the current president as a “well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory” and “diminished faculties in advancing age.”
