Former Alberta Premier and longtime cabinet minister Jim Prentice was one of four people killed when a small plane bound for Alberta crashed in a remote area of B.C.'s Okanagan. The Cessna citation jet had just taken off from Kelowna International Airport around 10 p.m. Thursday night when the aircraft disappeared off radar, said Bill Yearwood of the Transportation Board.
The aircraft was destined for Springbank, just outside Calgary.
"It was as during climb out from Kelowna that something went wrong obviously to cause the aircraft to descend and collide with terrain," Yearwood told CTV Morning Live.
All four occupants of the private business-style aircraft were killed.
Kelowna and Lake Country RCMP detachments dispatched several teams to the jet's last known location after being alerted by the Surrey Air Traffic Control Centre that it had lost contact with the jet, according to Cpl. Dan Moskaluk.
The wreckage was found about two hours later, in a remote area north of Kelowna, northeast of Winfield.
"Investigators located the crash site approximately four kilometres into a heavily wooded area," Moskaluk said in a news release.
A team from the Transportation Safety Board is headed to the crash site in hopes of determining what went wrong.
