Mayor Hec scolded for speaking out
By Joe Warmington, Toronto Sun
First posted: Friday, September 09, 2016 02:41 PM EDT | Updated: Friday, September 09, 2016 06:43 PM EDT
As his cancer grows Trent Hills Mayor Hector Macmillan says he has been told by the Ontario government to stop talking publicly about the inner workings of his appeals with them.
“I was told case conferences are supposed to be closed and not splashed on social media,” the 58-year-old who is fighting pancreatic cancer told me. “I was scolded for speaking out.”
So it’s bad enough OHIP and the Ministry of Health and Health Minister Dr. Eric Hoskins have not so far OK’d payment for life saving surgery in Kentucky or allow it to be done here, but now they are scolding him? It disgusted a lot of people that a cancer patient would be treated like this including PC MPP Lisa MacLeod.
The ministry has not returned my calls but they might as well know I won’t be silenced even though I have been told much the same.
My focus is to find an out of the box way Hector can get this surgery in the short window he has before the tumours in his pancreas spread.
Dr. Robert Martin in Kentucky says he can remove the tumour with nano knife surgery — something Ontario has the equipment and know-how to do as well but a surgery still deemed experimental.
I would rather give it a shot than just let the guy die.
“I have been sentenced to death and that is what is happening to hundreds of other Ontarians,” said Macmillan when I visited him at his cool, newly-renovated, 1950s-style bowling alley. “It seems if you don’t fit inside the medical box they have created, you can just go ahead and die.”
Some good news came this week when Dr. Martin said after examining Macmillan that his cancer is not Stage 4 as Ontario says but more like Stage 2.
It would mean he would be eligible to have all or some of this surgery paid for. So he went into a phone conference Thursday feeling positive.
It didn’t last long.
First he was scolded and then his situation was pushed off until Sept. 20.
“I don’t get a feeling they are going to do anything for me,” said Hector.
Too bad he wasn’t looking for backing for his right to die because there would probably be lots of support there.
But for life-saving surgery for a guy who has served people for 13 years, I think the message is clear from Ontario’s death panel: Shut up Hector. And die.
******
You know who would be perfect to run in a byelection to replace new PC MPP Raymond Cho on city council?
Doug Ford of course.
“Doug’s number scored higher in Scarborough than Cho’s,” joked a PC insider.
It would be great to have Doug run and get back on council with his nephew Michael and give Mayor Tory some tough fiscal opposition.
If Ford won Cho’s council seat in Scarborough-Rouge River (Ward 42) it would set him up for another mayoral run or to be a candidate in the next provincial election.
Another idea is to have legendary Sun columnist Sue-Ann Levy run out there. She was expected to be out signing her new book Underdog: Confessions of a right wing gay Jewish muckraker at Friday’s FordFest. Levy is a popular choice to go into politics — something she has tried once before. She would also make an interesting choice to run for mayor one day as well.
By the way I am still working on getting Sue-Ann’s book moved from the back history section Chapters-Indigo stores to the front table with Canadian authors. Hers would be the only conservative up there if I am ever successful.
She will also be signing her book at Hart House Sept. 14th from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the Debates Room. See you there.
********
I will have more on this in a future column but I want to pay my respects to Chief Bill McCormack’s wonderful family after his death this week. What a legend the chief was and what a great Canadian. One tough customer with uncompromising values.
Also condolence to another person with great values in Rev. Dr. John Wesley White, who passed away this month at 87. He was an associate evangelist to the Rev. Billy Graham. I had the pleasure of meeting Rev. White at Canada Christian College last Christmas and he had that special gleam in his eye as he told me “every day is special.” We lost two special ones in those two.
*********
Hats off to the Canadian Tamil Chamber of Commerce for holding its silver jubilee Global Business Expo for 25 years of service at the Hilton Toronto/Markham. You can check the web site for more info but my pals Gabriel Roshan and Kalaapam “Srini” Srinivasan tell me its’s something for everybody celebrating positive times for Tamil Canadians who are flourishing in the dream country of Canada.
Going to be a fun weekend. Have a good one everybody. Scrawler out.

Basically, what Ontario is telling Hector is they don't appreciate being called out and the dirty laundry aired in public. Maybe they should take the hint and dump their greed.

A Kentucky hoodie?? Hometown not good enough. Perhaps he should just heal himself and that would really throw a f*ck into a corrupt health care system.

A new drug that “wakes up” the immune system to attack cancer has extended the lives of people with metastatic pancreatic cancer and has no side-effects, raising hopes for a new and powerful tool against the most intractable form of the disease.

The drug, IMM-101, is considered groundbreaking because pancreatic cancer that has spread to other parts of the body usually kills within a few months.

Unlike other immunotherapy treatments, IMM-101 is not thought to have any side-effects, which have been hugely debilitating for many patients and even led to long-term disability in some cases.

The patients who were given the new immunotherapy drug actually felt better than those who were on standard chemotherapy, said Angus Dalgleish, professor of oncology at St George’s, University of London, who led the research.

Dalgleish is excited by the potential of the immunotherapy drug, although the trial is relatively small, involving 110 people. Only 18% of patients with advanced pancreatic cancer are alive after one year and 4% after five years, so new treatments for the disease are badly needed.

Cancer-stricken Mayor Hec says Onatrio health system rigged
By Shawn Jeffords, Political Bureau Chief
First posted: Thursday, September 15, 2016 12:03 PM EDT | Updated: Thursday, September 15, 2016 01:30 PM EDT
The mayor of an Eastern Ontario community came to Queen’s Park Thursday to take on the bureaucracy that he says is keeping him, and about a thousand others each year, from having a life-saving cancer treatment.
Trent Hills Mayor Hector Macmillan said that Ontarians are dying from the type of pancreatic cancer he has because of bureaucracy. He has been denied coverage for out-of-country treatment in the United States that would save his life because Ontario’s health system considers it experimental.
“The system is rigged so that you will fail and the appeal process is even more difficult,” Macmillan said. “Every step that you make there is a roadblock that you’re not allowed to do something.”
He has been forced to begin fundraising to pay for the $300,000 treatment in Kentucky. Progressive Conservative MPP Lisa Macleod said Macmillan’s fight is not unique, many Ontarians are forced to fundraise for out-of-country treatment and that needs to change.
“It’s become abundantly clear that the appropriate processes in place are not working for thousands of Ontario patients like Mayor Macmillan,” she said. “The Minister of Health cannot continue to wash his hands of Ontario patients who are falling through the cracks.”
More to come...

I would have more respect for him if he had started this campaign before he got cancer. Now he just seems like a crybaby.

Mayor Hec deserves shot at beating cancer

By Joe Warmington, Toronto Sun
First posted: Thursday, September 15, 2016 08:37 PM EDT | Updated: Thursday, September 15, 2016 09:15 PM EDT
TORONTO - He has a Kentucky surgeon who says he’s not too sick for a modern operation, and who’s ready to take out his tumour.
He has an Ontario cancer doctor who concurs his pancreatic cancer is not at Stage 4, but perhaps at the safer-to-operate Stage 2.
Ontario has the Nanoknife equipment to complete such a surgery — called irreversible electroporation (IRE) — and even doctors waiting for the experimental tag to be taken off so they can get at it and try to help people.
What Trent Hills Mayor Hector Macmillan doesn’t have is the approval of the Ministry of Health to get that much-needed, life-saving operation.
He doesn’t have the $300,000 needed to go the United States and have the procedure done there.
And he doesn’t have time to waste.
With any kind of cancer, the clock is not your friend. With pancreatic cancer, the clock is your enemy.
The last thing the 58-year-old politician should be doing is running around, getting stressed out and battling bureaucracy.
But that’s exactly what he has been doing, and what he was doing Thursday at Queen’s Park.
Invited by the Opposition Progressive Conservatives, Macmillan met with Leader Patrick Brown and MPPs Randy Hillier and Lisa MacLeod, who he says “all did a great job in bringing this issue to the forefront.”
But the meeting of the day was between the rural mayor and Health Minister Eric Hoskins, a man Macmillan has previously accused, in essence, of sentencing him to death, of sending a contract killer to murder him.
Oh to be a fly on the wall.
“Actually, he was a very nice guy,” Macmillan said. “He seemed very compassionate and concerned,”
Macmillan has a big meeting with OHIP scheduled for Friday. He hopes letters he presents from two doctors, including Kingston specialist Sulaiman Nanji, that indicate his cancer is not at Stage 4 will convince OHIP to have a change of heart and either fund his operation out of country or allow it to happen here under the supervision of American surgeon Robert Martin.
“Minister Hoskins seems hopeful, too, and seems positive, but explained rule changes in 2009 mean he can’t get involved in the process,” Macmillan said.
It was still a nice development, and a better way of doing business.
“Once we were finished talking about my situation, I brought up the other 999 people in the province in need of Nanoknife surgery as well,” said Macmillan. “He said he would see what he could do.”
The waiting on this one is over. What Hoskins should do is make sure Hector and the others get the best medical treatment available.
“He seemed surprised my appeal has been put off, but his hands are tied,” said Macmillan, who did have some parting words for the minister, who is also a doctor.
“I told him I have been a mayor for 13 years, and my dad was one for nine years and my grandfather was on council for 25 years ... I know an elected person can have a little influence.”
It’s not a hard decision, minister.
Hector Macmillan has everything in place to get a shot at trying to rid his body of cancer and keep serving Trent Hills and keep living.
He just needs somebody in authority to approve the cost of his surgery.
Come on, Premier Wynne. You had a billion for the gas plants. Make this happen Friday.

Oh, so you expect him to accept that at age 58!

Good riddance. Lots of kids waiting 15 years already for his spot. Let the old dink die.

How the fu€k do you expect economic recovery if people that can have kids can't because they don't have a job to support that choice?

Demand is the engine that pushes economic growth. Human population creates demand. It's as simple as pie.

I will say that Brown's office helped me tune in some sloppy health care deniers.
This allowed me to deal with MY issue when healthcare professionals could not, and should have been able to

How It Works

Cancer cells die when exposed to oxygen (cancer cells are anaerobic). There are many oxygen and ozone treatments, however, this article will discuss two of the best known and most effective “Stage IV” treatments – infusion bottle and ozone I.V.

You and Angst sure turned out be two pees in a bottle on this topic

"Ozone has been found to be an extremely safe medical therapy, free from side effects. In a 1980 study done by the German Medical Society for Ozone Therapy, 644 therapists were polled regarding their 384,775 patients, comprising a total of 5,579,238 ozone treatments administered. There were only 40 cases of side effects noted out of this number which represents the incredibly low rate of .000007%, and only four fatalities. Ozone has thus proven to be the safest medical therapy ever devised.” Considering that about 100,000 Americans a year die from drug reactions and interactions, ozone therapy is amazingly safe.

Government's priority are not it's Canadian citizens. Most surgeries are available right here in Canada, this of obviously an exception. McCallum published the cost of health care for his thousands of refugees at a cool $ 5.9 million annually; he said this was meant to ease burden on refugees. Ontario alone created temp care at a cost of $ 2 Million to meet the health care of our refugee. So fu&k yes! help Mayor MacMillan. I cannot see this being even an issue. We are going down.

Mayor looks to Germany for cancer care

By Joe Warmington, Toronto Sun

What the Hec?
Things did not go well for Trent Hills Mayor Hector Macmillan during his meeting with OHIP officials on Friday.
He was hoping new medical diagnoses from two doctors would change some minds and let him obtain life-saving Nanoknife surgery for his pancreatic cancer.
In fact, things got worse, he said.
“They decided they don’t trust the doctors who feel my cancer is no longer at Stage 4, which would make me eligible for funding to go to Louisville, Ky., for surgery,” he said. “They want more tests as proof (and) that would take months to complete.”
Months he does not have.
“I have got to take care of me now,” he said.
He’s washing his hands of Ontario’s health-care system for now.
“They don’t seem to want to help me,” said Macmillan. “I have had to make some decisions.”
The main one is to take the $55,000 raised so far by the public and go to Germany for surgery. He doesn’t have time to try to raise the $300,000 for Kentucky.
“OHIP says they can’t look at my case again until Sept. 27, and I hope to have this tumour taken out by then.”
Hec just hopes it isn’t to late.
...
We don’t have proof of life, but we do have proof of car.
A burgundy Toyota Highlander SUV owned by Toronto taxpayers sits in the driveway of Fire Chief Jim Sales’s stately country home, near Barrie.
There was no visible sign of Sales on Friday.
Toronto firefighters indicate they have not seen or heard from their chief since May 27, when he took personal leave from his job, which pays a base salary of $220,000.
“He’s not here,” said his extremely friendly wife, Roberta.
Why would the city’s fire chief take such a long paid leave? Why did the city let him keep his public vehicle during the leave?
“I understand you have holes to fill in, but I can’t help you,” said his wife.
She did confirm her husband lives in the home, but not much else.
So the mystery continues.
“I saw him mowing his lawn on Thursday,” a neighbour said.
There has been plenty of conjecture and gossip, but little fact. The city is not commenting.
His wife agreed to pass along a message to Sales, who has yet to respond. When I arrived a dog was barking in the window but it quieted down — perhaps hushed by another person in the spacious brick house, purchased in 2009 for $899,000.
Secrecy remains around why Sales is on leave.
...
Congratulations Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for getting Christian coffee shop owner Kevin Garratt home from China. Well done. Next is Pastor Hyeon Lim in North Korea and our interpreters in Afghanistan.
Have a good weekend everyone.
Scrawler out.
