Seeing as how you gave it such a good hard look, I assume you're aware that long guns of all types are used in less than 5% of the homicides in the U.S.?
True, but... Between 2009 and mid 2015 there were 133 mass shootings in the US. Only 15 of those mass shootings involved high capacity magazines and "assault" weapons. That's 11% of the total. However, those 15 incidents averaged 13.3 victims per shooting which is 155% higher than the number of victims shot where a high capacity mag and/or an "assault" weapon wasn't used.
But bans rarely make sense. After the L'Ecole Polytechnique massacre in Montreal, the lefties in govt got together and started banning all kinds of firearms, most purely based on the fact they "looked scary". The irony was, they didn't ban the Ruger Mini-14 semi-auto that was used in the L'Ecole Polytechnique massacre.
Same with other rifles. Take your standard .22 single shot rifle. Perfectly legal in Canada. But add some after market cosmetics to dress it up to look like an AR-15 or AK-47 and suddenly it's a restricted weapon. Add a folding stock and suddenly it's a prohibited weapon. Nothing has been changed except the appearance and portability. The firing rate and muzzle velocity are still the exact same as they where when then rifle was originally purchased.
Yep. Let's blame everything except the root cause. Of course we can see how well gun control works when it comes to terrorism. Just ask France and Belgium. Or Norway.
