'If the climate stays like this, we won't make it' say those on the frontline of Africa's drought

Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe (CNN)Torrents of water once thundered over the precipice at Victoria Falls, on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, shrouding the area in mist.

But a multi-year drought has slowed large sections of the imposing falls to little more than a weak stream, and the lush vegetation they once nourished is hot and dry.
The parched waterfall is perhaps the most visible effect of the drought that is hammering this region. But it is not the most devastating. The World Food Program says that more than 7 million people in Zimbabwe alone are going hungry, with a further 45 million people across southern Africa at risk.

As delegates desperately search for a practical plan for cutting emissions at the COP25 meetings in Madrid, Spain, this week, this region is a stark reminder that the climate crisis is here and now -- and that countries that did the least to cause the climate crisis are already being hit the hardest.
"Our future is still ahead of us," said Nkosi Nyathi, a 16-year-old climate activist from Victoria Falls, ahead of his flight to COP25 in Madrid. "We are looking at what is already happening with the drought. What is our future going to be like? Even just 10 years down the line or 15 years down the line, it will affect us very much."
Nyathi started campaigning for the environment when he was just 10 years old. He says while he wasn't good at sports, he was good at debating, so he started going into the communities to educate people about renewable energy and climate change.

We are privileged here but the rest of the world is suffering from our decadence. It is hard for most Canadians to see how our lifestyle is affecting the third world, not just with climate, but their poverty is directly related to our lifestyle, our economics and our lust for power.

Drought is caused by cold air over large bodies of water decreasing moisture released into the atmosphere via evaporation to be returned as rain (remember the water cycle from your school days?). If the Earth was warmed, then more evaporation would take place over large bodies of water which would increase the humidity and in turn reduce drought through more rainfall.

Assuming man could influence global warming to increase evaporation over the oceans to influence the water cycle to increase rainfall to elevate drought in places like Zimbabwe to prevent the deaths of these 7,000,000 people in Zimbabwe and the other 45,000,000 people at risk across Southern Africa....should we? Would you be in favour of more rainfall in Zimbabwe and longer growing cycles in Canada both leading to increased food production and so on and so forth??

Since there's no "urgency" about climate change (all faux news) it's no big deal. Once the manufacturers are able to produce, in bulk, electric vehicles that are affordable to the average person and ways to over come how to re-use or recycle batteries, the price will eventually come down. Now, it's not a big deal and the cars we drive now-a-days are quite efficient anyway.

Until then, we'll still need fossil fuels as we'll somehow have to be able to recharge and that takes electricity which in turn, will take fossil fuels with perhaps a little bit of green energy to back it up. Besides, why should the average Joe subsidize solar panels and electric vehicles that the upper crust can afford and that most of us can't afford to purchase ourselves. It doesn't make sense.

There's no rush and it'll happen in the next 40 - 50 years anyways so no big deal. We live in a pretty clean environment right now and it'll only get better with technology. We simply need to concentrate on the areas that are lacking in any substantial regulations for actual pollution and by distributing the technology we currently have to the nations that need it for clean water, air and soil. The biggest obstacle is likely tyrannical governments more than anything.
Yes I tend to agree . Out here , many are working on watershed habitat . Keeping green spaces productive and enhancing fish habitat . Far more productive then giving money to Western Forest Products to plant trees they are already required to plant .

No Cliffy their poverty is directly the fault of tribalism and corruption. What you would like to see emulated here .

But............but..........................

how will LIE-berals BUY votes if you cut off their corporate welfare...............................

to Western Tree Products?????????????????????

Just LOOK at the fuss here in Ontari-owe when Doug Ford cut the tree GROWING Subsidy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is an article illustrating completely twisted LIE-beral standards and values!! With some comments of my own in brackets):

Ontario tree nursery to destroy millions of trees due to provincial cutbacks

By Victoria Ahearn, Cdn Press

Published: May 6, 2019.

TORONTO — One of the main nurseries for an Ontario tree planting program that's being scrapped by the province said it will likely have to destroy about three million trees because of the cancellation.

(Cannot sell them immediately so they must be destroyed?? Why the RUSH??)

Ed Patchell, CEO of Ferguson Tree Nursery in Kemptville, Ont., said he can't afford to pay for staff, supplies and operating expenses to run the nursery and maintain all the trees that are in various stages of growth.

"If we don't have a potential client to buy those trees, then I can't afford to keep putting money into it," Patchell said.

(OH gosh...........here is a question- WHY NOT GIVE the trees away to anybody who wants to come dig them up?? Maybe even charge a MODEST FEE to recoup some losses? Why go to the costly work of “destroying the trees”??????????????)

"It's cheaper to destroy them at a young age than it is at the ship age, plus I don't have to keep carrying the costs. It's not something that we want to do, it's something that we're going to be forced to do because we can't financially carry it."

(Uh huh - If the guy has no customers any more then WHY does he care what happens to the trees?? Unless he is hoping to SUCKER bleeding heart LIE-berals into “rescuing” his trees?? AND WAIT!! That is what happened!! Our idiot Boy Justin stepped in with HIS cheque book to save the trees!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

(Of course a CYNIC would point out that the money Ford has saved- is now being spent by Our idiot Boy!! Welcome to Canada where the SUCKERS - I mean tax payers NEVER catch a break!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Last month the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry announced it would cancel the 50 Million Tree Program, which has seen the planting of more than 27 million trees across Ontario since 2008.

(Planting trees is a good thing! But should not lumber companies and subdivision developers and road builders- who are most responsible for trees being cut down- be PAYING for needed replacement trees?? And are not the road builders actually working for LIE-beral govt?? Are LIE-berals SLACKING OFF on their commitment to the environment- as they so often do?? WHY can this tree biz exist ONLY if govt throws gravy at it????????????????????)

(As for LIE-beral allged commitment to the environment - should we discuss the RAW SEWAGE dumped at sea by City of Victoria?? Or the antiquated sewage treatment plants all over Canada that so CONVENIENTLY over flow after every rain shower -thus relieving LIE-berals of the need to treat quite so much sewage?)

(Or should we discuss the LIE-beral plan to dump 65 million litres of semi treated pulp mill waste - PER DAY - into Northumberland Strait?? Or maybe we should discuss the millions of litres of sewage dumped into the Beaufort Sea by coastal communities in Nunuvut/North West Territories?? Or maybe we could discuss the habit of cruise liners who hold their waste water while transiting Yankee/Alaskan waters and then dump it freely and LEGALLY in Cdn waters??)

(A cynic might be excused for thinking the LIE-beral commitment to the environment was an EMPTY PROMISE and that this tree deal is a FREEBIE give away to LIE-beral PALS????????????????)

Ferguson Tree Nursery was one of the main nurseries that grew seedlings for the program, which saved landowners up to 90 per cent of the costs of large-scale tree planting.

(Oh yes!! And the HOG landowners of LARGE Suburban ESTATES NEED their cheap trees as supplied by LIE-berals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Patchell said the province allowed for this spring's tree plant to go ahead, but it won't continue next year.

(Perhaps Patchell has not heard that Ontari-owe is the most INDEBTED SUB NATIONAL political entity on the planet?? And that LIE-beral waste and extravagance CANNOT CONTINUE?? The bankers WILL NOT PERMIT IT!! It is not Ford that is the problem in BANKRUPT Ontari-owe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

His nursery has been growing the trees in fields and green houses in Kemptville through a contract with Forests Ontario, which managed the program and received the provincial funding for it.

(That`s nice- LIE-berals are so very good at finding “partners” to throw gravy at in exchange for VOTER SUPPORT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

The trees then went to planters, conservation authorities, private contractors and stewardship groups. They were planted on private lands to help re-establish forest cover and reclaim sites that weren't ideal for agriculture throughout the province — primarily in southern Ontario — said Patchell.

(How lovely!! EVERYBODY LOVES getting govt gravy!! To bad we have run out !! In related news- ,maybe the pay offered to workers at govt sponsored nurseries is to high - just the usual deal with govt HOGS?????)

Not all the trees are ready for shipping right now, with some of them only a year old, which is a financial challenge for the nursery.

(Yes- no doubt it will be a hardship for the nursery employees as well!! Getting weaned from govt gravy IS A HARD THING for us all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

"It can take up to four years before a tree is at a size that it's actually suitable to ship, so the challenge is, how do we pay to keep growing these things if we don't have clients?" Patchell said.

(Well YES!! This is the same sort of problem faced by restaurant owners when dead broke customers stop buying restaurant FOOD!! Or we could look at the business model for General Motors that has a LONG HISTORY of making cars that people chose NOT to buy!! But how awkward that GM also has a LONG HISTORY of sucking up govt grants!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

(Our idiot Boy Justin has just written off $2.8 BILLION DOLLARS in govt loans to GM and Chrysler- declaring them as “unrecoverable”!! Our idiot Boy states this fact WITHOUT ANY SHAME - over the fact that he RAGED AT Stephen Harper for not doing more to “save GM” in 2008!! And now the GM ingrates are LEAVING Canada!! AND taking OUR money with them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

"That's why there's going to be a certain amount that will have to be destroyed because of that. We actually have more than the three million in the ground, so that's what we're looking at, is having to destroy to keep everything affordable."

Patchell said the cancellation of the program will have an impact on the environment, noting it may lead to soil erosion and reduction of forest cover, air quality, water quality and wildlife habitat.

(Oh dear - WHY NOT LEAVE the trees in place until such time as new customers may be found? What kind of business model is it that mandates uprooting and destroying trees that cannot be sold- only to make way for MORE TREES?? Something DOES NOT ADD UP HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

He doesn't plan on destroying the trees immediately, but said he can't carry them all summer. Patchell plans to decide over the next month exactly how many trees need to be destroyed.

"There are some people that are showing some interest in supporting the program, so we'll have to see what happens," Patchell said.

"I've had lots of people saying, 'Can I buy 100 trees here or 100 trees there?'"

(WHAT AN ODD concept?? Selling off smaller bunches of trees- and maybe even at a lower rate than govt price gouging so that SOME MONEY can be recovered??
Oh well- LIE-berals DO NOT LIKE Capitalism- and they have limited understanding of its workings as well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

(But then we all know that getting govt gravy is MUCH BETTER than dealing with ordinary people - we have such a DEPLORABLE HABIT of being penny pinching peasants!! And now we have had the temerity to OFFEND LIE-berals by electing a penny pinching govt as well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

It is really foolish to attribute poverty to a single cause. It happens due to many factors, often interlinked. The main reason it persists is the unwillingness of those who have more than they need, to share adequately from their surplus.

Cliffy, I just wanted you to know that I talked to Santa this year, and he informed me that he only gives presents to the good girls and boys that do not posts hundreds of meme's on adult forums.

You may still have time to change, but as it stands now, you are on Santa's "naughty" list. I heard you had your heart set on that model train set.

You're posting this on what you refer to as an adult forum?
