Is it time to start closing the wage gap?

Here's an idea, if you don't like what the CEO is making don't support the company...or continue whining like a little baby

Exactly how do Ontarians avoid 'supporting' Ontario Hydro? It's a monopoly and if we want electric power we have to get it from Ontario Hydro. Not only that, we have to pay a 'debt reduction' fee because of the poor management that led to the debt in the first place.
I don't care about Corporate CEOs wages when the taxpayers are not paying for it, but when government get us over a barrel with no recourse but to pay, pay, pay, that's a different matter.

Why should we close the wage gap? Why shouldn't it be even wider?

Interesting questions. In the conventional economy a wide wage gap tends to strangle liquidity eventually the economy stagnates ensuring lower wages to both the top and the bottom. If the money isn't on the street with consumers it can't get into the cash registers and business suffers. See todays papers. Pt 2 Because the money flow has ebbed from the bottom strata the crust must resort to cannabilism to widen the earnings gap, eventually nobodies happy.

That's funny...thinking your intelligence level is tied to a post ratings system on a web forum.

I think before everyone gets their undies in a knot people should go back to the beginning where I proposed cutting the "fat cat" back so that the working poor like the ones who frequent the food banks could get a measly $1 an hour wage raise. I never proposed pulling anybody down, just attempting to slightly stem the condition of "the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer". It's too bad a couple of the usual suspects have to resort to acting like A$$holes. :) :)

What you describe is a very old economic problem similar to farmers eating thier milk and cheeze goats and cows, eventually they have to feed flocks again assuming they have any left.

I think it's a very difficult proposition to legislate conscience. Doesn't work as a matter of fact, probably makes it worse. That being said, I side with the poor as well. It's just that the only people who will feel what they feel, and will be aware of the distress and want to make an effort to alleviate the condition. are those who've been there themselves.

Yes and no- When the gov't needs money they have no problem whatsoever raising it! I'm far from 'hurting' myself but see dozens daily who are struggling while there are pockets of obscene wealth in our country. Like the old adage- "the rich get richer and the poor get poorer". Maybe if the ratio was changed from 184 times to 164 times a lot of people would be far better off.

I tend to agree with the man who said, "the poor you shall have with you always". But,,he also said, the first shall be last, and the last shall be first. . I think it was J Paul Getty who when asked by an interviewer , how much money do you think you need?,, Getty answered, "just a little bit more. " Guess we'll just have to see what happens. I don't see the status quo changing much in our lifetime.

I have no problem with that, Corduroy, you have a perfect right to your opinion which you've hinted at. As our views are poles apart we have absolutely nothing to discuss. Wishing you a happy New Year!

It's easier to hide amongst the masses than be a public leader.

The masses are generally thought of as the "public". I think you have public parrasites confused with public leaders. That's a common enough error these days. Sooner or later a real public leader rises and then we see real public developement.

Well, you learn something new everyday. Didn't realize Getty said "the first shall be................................................", always thought that was a Biblical quote!

Bring it back to 1950. :)

The man working, the wife keeping care of the house and kids..

Use to be a time when when it only took one bread winner to support a family.

Still does if you have a decent job. WHere I work everyone makes in excess of $100000/yr. BUT we also work 50+hrs a week.

Truth is buddy, in this society, one cannot get by without the other.

That's true, but as we can see from this thread some believe wealth comes from somewhere else other than labour. And they will argue about that, as they already have. Of course they forget what unhappy labour does when they've had enough of fat CEO's taking all the cream. There's nothing prettier than a burning penthouse or castle.

When it comes to the wage slave vs. the multi $million C.E.O. I'm on the side of the wage slave that does an honest day's work..................not the dog f**ker!

CEOs of large corps are rarely DFers. If they don't perform the shareholders will soon turf him/her.You have to also look at just how their annual pay is made up. How much is salary and how much is in shares or performance bonus tied to share price?
If the shareholders are happy no one else has a right to complain because it is shareholder's money. If you as a customer don't like how much the CEO of megacorp is being paid don't buy their product.

It will change, the wealthy are earning less these recent days as well, they have over indulged, like they most often do, there is a great reset in motion right now today. This next decade will entail rapid far reaching change, for the better I think.

can't be a leader until you learn how to follow.

That's true but what and who you follow makes a great difference. It also depends on the definition of real wealth and real power.

Generally I agree with you but if you look at retail earnings these past couple of years it is clear that the wage earners have been faced with not buying anyones product rather than exercising a choice between different products. Retail earnings are tanking, shipping, investment, savings all tanking at the same time.

Yes JLM J Paul Getty was one of the apostles and wrote many books in the bible.

Watch closely................you might see a revolution!
I don't think so. The ones who do care and would want to make a difference, ain't got a pot to pi ss in they own selves. :)
