I'm unsurprised... I think satisfactory would be a good description.

Even though you will almost never find me in the Conservative camp, I think that realistically it was a race between the Conservatives and the Liberals, and between the two I prefer the Conservatives right now.

The Liberals need to step back, clean up and re-group.

Like many I also think the minority government is a very good thing, it keeps a leash on everyone, and means that Harper will have an opportunity to prove himself and his party in the interest of Canada. Whatever policy they try to pass through must meet with tougher scruinty than a majority government.

I can't say that I am that "afraid" of Harper in this context, I'm suspect of his social conservative views, but I think that the party will not be able to exercise those views in this context and will hopefully pass some of the policies that are more in favour of healing Canada.... while going too far on giving over power to the proviences could result in a very week federalism there is a real problem with the fiscal imbalance.

I am a little dissapointed that the Liberals got as many seats as they did... I would have liked to see the NDP hold more of the blance of power.

But, I do think it is very good that the Conservatives were the ones to take seats away from the Bloc... this means that the federalists are alive and kicking in Quebec, and it will be very difficult for the Bloc to continue to win by any large margin with two federalist parties to compete with next time.

On a riding by riding note, I'm glad to say that my riding and the one next to me both had a change over from the Liberals to the NDP...

Mine: Trinity Spadina Tony Ianno defeated by Oliva Chow, I think she'll be a very good MP, she's really involved in the community and we see her around lots, I've never even met Tony.

Parkdale-High Park: Sam Bulte defeated by Peggy Nash... this is a real surprise in someways, Bulte has been hanging onto this riding mainly because of a strong ethnic vote (Polish), and that is the main reason that Nash lost last time, although I do think that one reason Nash won this time is that the Green Party canadidate who has been one of the strongest GP candidates in the country to date, stepped down before this election and there was a new GP candidate who I will hazard a guess didn't pick up as much of the vote, which probably went to Nash.

I'm really glad to see Valeri gone.... not that I get into Liberal politics all that much but I've got family in that riding and I saw first hand what happened when they ousted Shelia Copps.... it was sooooo very very far from legitimate, the evening news even caught Valeri's guys sneaking busloads of people from the periphery of the riding through side doors and giving them membership cards at the same time as people who had been standing in line for hours at the front doors were either shut out or told their memeberships were no good and could not vote.

The only thing that would have made this election a real win for me would have been to see a GP member... but another time.

Now onto electoral reform!

Hi Jay

You are in one of those tweaky SNL moods I think...I feel guilty talking ice cream on this good topic... but but... Tiger Tail? It
sounds terrible.... yellow and black stripe/dotted? Ick.

People on this topic sound to me like they have had a huge yard sale, dumped out a lot of stuff they didn't need, things they loved and will miss but are taking up valuable space...and bad things they shouldn't have kept.....

Starting with a fresh (or reasonably fresh) empty space....feels kinda good.

I'm just relishing in the moment. :D

I'm also glad to see the backside of Ann Maclellan so we can keep Alberta both rat-free and liberal-free. I had mixed feelings about Belinda winning. This way she has to sit on the Opposition bench (like a kid in detention) and have to ask questions of Peter Makay, the Minister of 'whatever'.

I thought you might like that one... :)

I'm happy for Belinda though. I'm glad to see her constituents like her enough to forgive her turn-coat behavior. I just hope when she sits in her new opposition seat, she has to sit in Peter's old seat, or something, anything to add to her discomfort with the whole thing.

Here in Ontario we are anything but rat and Liberal free.....

Thanks and I hope my friend will not be mad at me when she returns :p (I'll give her your name here!!!).

Sad day for Canada... won't be long before budget is shot to hell and we are back in recession....

Bet ya 20 bucks there is a surplus next year! :D

in what currency are you wagering? If Harper pushes his agenda through the canadian dollar might not be worth too much next year.

$20 US?

How about 20 Paistres Acadien, we will be reunited by then. Rumour has it that Dick Cheney will resign, Steven Harper will assume the vice presidency and the race will be on! Dr. Evil and Mini-me will rule all of North America!

Georgie only has two more years and then Alberta Rules the world! The Canadian Takeover is going as planned, The Pig will be in the python soon and with Currencies at par by fiat, it will be fun to watch the red States adopt the Tooney, learn Metric and praise that Champion of Wheat and Oil, President Steven Harper.

Meanwhile Quebec still wonders what happened but now with no restrictions on Snowbirding in New Orleans, New Orleans is re transformed into a Francophone centre of Culture.

Meanwhile, Barbara S. is elected the Governor of Alberta.

RE: Is Everyone Happy Wit

I cried when I saw them confirm a Conservative Gov't.

There are so many aspects that will unfold in due time.

I think a webcam excerpt they played last night from a woman in Ontario sums it up : "You fools, you know now what you have done! Good bye to the Canada I have loved. I will sit and wait these next few years for everything to fall apart."

Canadian MPs do pay taxes

They receive a salary of $65,600.00 on which they do pay taxes plus a $21,400.00 tax free allowance.

Cabinet ministers and the prime minister receive a bit more.

No, just like in America, they are tax exempt.
First Nations aren't tax exempt. That's a common misconception. From what I understand from a friend (who is a status indian) only "status indians" are exempt (and most first nations people are not actually status), and even then it's only for money earned working on the reserve.

Here's a link for you:
http://www.ainc-inac.gc.ca/pr/info/info113_e.html

In general, Aboriginal people in Canada are required to pay taxes on the same basis as other people in Canada, except where the limited exemption under Section 87 of the Indian Act applies. Section 87 says that the "personal property of an Indian or a band situated on a reserve" is tax exempt. Métis and Inuit are not eligible for this exemption.

The exemption in Section 87 of the Indian Act has existed since before Confederation. It reflects the unique constitutional and historic place of Aboriginal people in Canada. The courts have held that the exemption is intended to preserve the entitlements of Indian people to their reserve lands, and to ensure that the use of their property on their reserve lands is not eroded by taxation.
