I strongly disagree with the fear that some here have with a decentralized government in Canada.

It's not a fear of decentralized government, it's a fear that the Conservatives will give away so much of the national government's powers to the provinces that it won't be able to do anything at all and Canada will become just a geographic expression covering ten or a dozen separate nations, only two of which would have any chance of functioning as such. That's not decentralization, that's unprincipled appeasement.

Now that Harper is in, I'm way more concerned about being sold out to the US than the SSM issue

More than anything else, this was what made me worry about Harper, though, if people paid attention to actions rather than politically self-serving election rhetoric, Martine was selling us a drop at a time.

I was also happy to see the Con (nice guy, seems like) win my riding and oust the Lib, believe it or not. My vote to the NDP was a symbolic one, but I'm proud of it nonetheless.

Oh I don't know about that, ITN. When I was walking the dog this morning, I noticed pieces of sky on some people's lawns...

Exactly. This is what Alberta and Quebec have always wanted and now they will be natural allies on this. As far as CPC being harmed by working with the BQ. That would only be if they formed a governing coalition, which they won't. This will be an issue by issue governance and on this issue they are natural allies.

Fiscally in the long term forget transfer payments to the have nots. How viable are the countries of New Brunswick, PEI, Nova Scotia, Manitoba, Nunavut...

A sad day for Canada IMO.

The Liberals ran an increasingly centrist government over the past twelve years, and the result has been increased alienation, and increased support for seperatism in Quebec, Alberta, even B.C. to a lesser extent. Tighten the reigns of federalism too much and the provinces will chafe, and resist.

Harper is talking about increasing transfers to the provinces, not decreasing them, Freethinker. But if those provinces are not viable on their own, what is the point of keeping them afloat? Let sink or swim.

Well I am happy with the results. However, it was kind of sad when the NDP had something like 32-33 seats, and 20 more ridings to go and they end up with 29 seats.

However, more people voted for the NDP, and if the NDP does as well with this parliment as they did with the last I think the NDP could be a big power, especially with Jack Layton as the most popular politician.

But with the election, I think it will last to the summer of next year, 2007.

Hopefully, more funding for defence, reform of parliment, and that accountability act will be passed. But other than that, I don't see it lasting till next year.

The special intest groups are generally those that won't be happy with this result. How anyone can be sad that a corrupt, cheating, lying and dirty party was ousted from power is beyond me. Canada is about the entire country, from sea to sea to sea not just about those in Toronto and Vancouver. Those who are sad are from places like Markham, Scarborough, Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughn, etc. The rest of the country is tired of votes being handed to the Liberals because it's a family tradition. Not all of us are from minority groups and we'd like to be counted too. Are you not sick of the blatant over-taxation? All the broken promises? Lax immigration? Soft sentences for violent criminals? Mis-use of your tax dollars? Our porous borders? If you answered "no" to any of these you are a fool.

I hear so much of the fear mongering about Harper. You're afraid of what might happen but not appalled by what HAS happened. That makes me more afraid than anything else. The Liberals can do anything they want people will ignore it and still try to vote them in. You should all be ashamed. The rest of Canada has now spoken. You'd better start listening.

Before you start flaming me, my family came here to start a better life too but it's not about who was in power when we got here, it's about making life better now. I'm tired of funding their pet projects, trips and expensive dinners out. No one seems offended that Paul Martin doesn't even pay Canadian Taxes. Strange, isn't it?

I'm happy:

A minority government that will govern for 2 to 3 years. A government that has reasonable representation from all the major regions. A good result for Canada. Also a good result in terms of the liberals have a decent base left and will rebuild with a new leader.

Next election: a choice of federal parties for ALL Canadians..Conservatives and Liberals.

MPs don't pay income taxes here.

And I think Falcon was refering to the shipping company Martin used to own.
