Mayor John Tory got a firsthand look on Saturday at three different types of "all-electric eBuses" on Saturday that the TTC will test before it receives 30 by early next year.

The fully electric buses, which have zero emissions and no diesel components, are manufactured by three companies, BYD, New Flyer and Proterra. The TTC is expecting to get 30 in all, 10 from each manufacturer, for a total cost of $50 million by March 2019. The federal and provincial governments are contributing funds.

(Ah- LIE-berals LOVE their crappy and costly electric toy vehicles!)

After getting behind the wheel of one of the demonstration buses at Richview Collegiate Institute, Tory told reporters in Etobicoke the TTC is aiming to have a "zero-emissions" fleet by 2040.

"I don't think people know yet of the big push that we have on in the city of Toronto to move our fleet to be emissions free by 2040. That sounds like a long way away but you have to start," Tory said at Ward 4 Community Environment Day. Mayor John Tory says the TTC will begin testing the buses 'in our climate, on our streets' next spring.

(Yes- twice before Toronto Silly Hall FOOLS have drunk the coolaid and bought “green busses” that always cost about fifty percent MORE than conventional busses and which have rapidly developed assorted mechanical problems and thus far have always utterly FAILED to produce the sort of fuel savings that were the main reason for buying the busses!)

"We are very serious in the city about making our greenhouse gas emission reduction targets that we have set," he said.

(That`s nice- but the city is STONY BROKE and is facing an array of costly problems so how can they justify buying these EXPERIMENTAL machines? Surely the dead broke city should be letting others take the fiscal risks to prove or disprove the value of this THIRD GENERATION of green busses- especially as the first two generations were utter failures? Clearly, political POSTURING on climate issues trumps common sense and logic at Silly Hall! But LIE-berals never consider any price to high to impede their virtue signalling and self congratulatory announcements!)

(And does this purchase of electric busses signal some sort of disappointment at the vehicles Bombardier is supposed to be supplying- but has not done? We know TTC brass went before a judge trying to get the Bombardier contract cancelled due to deliveries being so hugely behind schedule- coupled with a series of damaging quality control issues on the few vehicles that were delivered! The judge refused to annul the contract and told TTC to be patient- and then Our idiot Boy Justin gave Toronto some money so it could cobble its old diesel machines together till Bombardier actually delivered its products- and we all know LIE-berals DO SO enjoy buying votes in Quebec and good business practices be damned! LIE-berals will say nothing against their bought and paid for union Hog allies in Quebec- no matter the scale or scope of their failings!)

Tory explained TTC buses contribute to the degradation of the environment through the use of diesel fuel, but the city and transit agency are determined to use greener technology through its eBus program. The TTC will test the buses "in our climate, on our streets" next spring, Tory said.

(So they are spending huge money they do not have to test out THIRTY BUSSES? Why not test out ONE from each of the three makers? Or is TTC THAT SHORT of equipment and that broke that they are prepared to take all manner of risks just so long as some sort of machines get on the streets swiftly? And we know that both federal and provincial LIE-berals offered up grant money as part of their commitment to mouldy “green” policy so at least the city is not wasting ALL its own money? LIE-berals are so obsessed with green technology one has to assume they are getting a personal cut of the profits from the sale of these gizmos! And of course the more electricity we use- for any reason- the more gravy the private sector LIE-beral pals who actually own our electrical system will skim off for their profit!)

"And it really will just continue to move us into the vanguard of cities, in terms of being a greener city and meeting our climate change obligations and our greenhouse gas reductions."

(If Silly Hall LIE-berals were truly concerned about the environment and wanted to at least try to catch up to the “vanguard of cities” then they would immediately derail the civil service union Hog gravy train and start building MORE TRANSIT! Bem Case, the TTC's head of vehicle programs, said tests will measure how fast the buses travel, the range they can achieve, how well they perform in different temperatures, how their doors open depending on the weather and their corrosion.
"The buses are entirely new to us," Case said.

The TTC board, which approved the purchase last November, will install the necessary infrastructure to power the vehicles, including charging equipment and software.

In a November 2017 staff report, the TTC said the electric buses embody the future for the transit agency, which has about 2,000 buses in its fleet.

"Electric buses are the only truly green technology with the potential for zero emissions from generation through to bus operations. Electric buses have no tailpipe emissions, and in Ontario, generation of electricity for overnight charging is 100% nuclear and completely free of GHG emissions," the report reads.

(How do these hypocrites figure nuclear power is GREEN? Are they totally oblivious to the almost daily shipments of Tritium coolant and other radio active waste being sent down highway 401 to the massive concrete bunker/burial sites where OPG stores its radioactive slop? Some of this slop will need major storage facilities for up to 20,000 YEARS and want to bet NO LIE-beral has ever counted out the carbon foot print for all the excavation that will be required, plus all the toxic lead shielding and massive concrete bunkers that will be needed! Nuclear generators produce a LOT of power fairly cheaply but to suggest it is Zero Emission is a LIE-beral Fake News story!)

The report notes the electric bus industry is "so new" that there are no large-scale fleets in long term operations anywhere in North America and therefore testing is crucial.

(So I REPEAT: WHY is dead broke Toronto taking the financial risk with such unproven and costly technology?)

Public transit is already environmentally friendly, the report added. "By its nature, mass transit is green," it says.

But adopting new technology too quickly can cause such problems as unreliable vehicles, low customer and operator satisfaction, and high maintenance and operation costs, it adds.

(In other words- adopting new technology too quickly can lead to exactly the sort of problems the previous two generations of “green” TTC busses had! In addition- adopting new technology can lead to the sort of problems TTC had with their Presto car readers! Yet more proof of BAD LIE-beral business practice since they were warned that Presto was the newest and most costly and least tested card reader system available- but they went ahead anyway- with inevitable bad results!)

"As the TTC operates the largest bus fleet in Canada and the third largest in North America, however, we also have a role to play in the advancement of technologies that promise to offer significant safety, environmental, vehicle reliability, customer focused improvements."

(And maybe Silly Hall spending priorities are DEAD WRONG? Maybe they should leave the risks of developing an entirely new industry to others and worry about repairing social housing before it is ALL condemned as unfit to live in- as those 150 plus townhouses in the Jane/Finch area were last summer! Yes- over 150 city owned slum dwellings were torn down because they were to rotten to repair! So instead if simply repairing existing units- the city now has to find the EXTRA money to start over again from nothing with those units!)

Silly Hall would rather tear down Gardiner and close off portions of the city rather than make needed repairs! there is something counter intuitive about India and China being leaders in the alt vehicle field along with a place like Norway.

It would seem early adopters fall into the need to and the want to categories.

China and India need to simply as a matter of survival. Their pollution problems are critical and they cannot go on as before and they fully understand that,

In Norway's case they could ignore alt energy altogether and it would be fine. Except that they are educated people who understand that the world needs to adapt and that they can contribute to thus by adapting.

While I normally try to restrain myself from calling people idiots, I quit reading your post after the second sentence for fear I might succumb to the temptation. Please remember there are other valid opinions besides your and some no doubt that are even more valid, so get off your high horse! :lol:

Well, thanks to people like CM there is a resistance to modernization among the intellectually deprived. However, anyone who bothers to research the topic of clean energy knows that it is advancing on so many fronts that it is going to be impossible to stop. That is why climate deniers hate people like Elon Musk and nations like Germany so much, because they are going ahead with green energy despite the naysayers. Even worse multiple private companies in the US are going ahead with huge green energy projects in addition to those already completed.

However, anyone who bothers to research the topic of clean energy knows that it is advancing on so many fronts that it is going to be impossible to stop. I own and operate EcoLimo Niagara. This is a local Niagara company specializing in zero-emission transportation. I operate a Tesla Model S, providing the ultimate “Eco-Friendly” wine tours, airport transfers, sightseeing, etc.

(That`s nice- Tesla model S is the LUXURY vehicle sold to environmentally conscious MILLIONAIRES!)

I previously owned and operated EcoLimo York Region for 10 years, where I provided low-emission transportation with hybrid vehicles.

(Oh my- you had HYBRID vehicles? In an OPEN admission that an all electric car simply does not have the range NOR the swift refueling capacity and convenience of a gasoline car?)

I am a proponent of Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne’s Electric Vehicle (EV) incentive program as I see this is a great way to help get more electric vehicles into the taxi and airport transfer industry.

(Sadly- as other Toronto Sun writers have proved- the great majority of those who support electric cars do so FOR THE GOVT SUBSIDIES!)

We currently have thousands of gas-guzzling vehicles burning millions of gallons of gasoline and propane in vehicles that often carry just one passenger.

If the owners of these vehicles could use substantial incentives to purchase electric vehicles and/or plug-in hybrids, we could reduce our carbon footprint by a huge amount.

(Sadly, we cannot afford such subsidies! One has only to look at the latest tv commercials in this summer of 2017- in which the gas powered Nissan Qashqai is offered at $20,000.00 Cdn while the new Tesla model 3 is offered at $35,000.00 U.S! Which makes the model 3 about DOUBLE the cost of a gas powered Nissan! With the added bonus that the Model 3 is untested in real world conditions and has that pesky limited range and awkward refueling deal as well as the extra cost! With the further bonus that Nissan parts are available off the shelf at various retail outlets while Tesla parts are offered at.......some place......?)

(Sadly, Hayes IGNORES a quicker, cheaper and vastly easier method of cutting down on green house gas emissions! We COULD simply cut back on the gravy we pay to civil service union Hogs! An admittedly informal survey reveals that the majority of those lining up at any airport are Hogs! And why not? We pay them at least one third MORE than similar workers in the private sector- and that does NOT include their HUGE pension rip off! Ontari-owe LIE-berals have promised an extra fifty five Billion dollars in pension top ups to OSSTF/Ontari-owe high school teachers- with EIGHTEEN other unions promised hundreds of billions more! Cut gravy payments to Hogs and watch our air miraculously CLEAR!)

(Think of the THOUSANDS of ATV`s, riding lawn mowers, sea- doos and all those HUGE gas guzzling motor boats rumbling along waterways at gallons per mile and NOT miles per gallon! Think of the “bubble systems” those eldctrically powere air compressors that pump air into pipes laid on lake bottoms to keep water stirred up for 6 months each year so Hogs will not have ice damage on their precious cedar constructions!)

(Goldstein fails to mention that Lithium- the major component in any battery is at least as toxic as oil ans may be WORSE! Additionally, Lithium may be in SHORTER supply than oil. And Lithium is highly flammable if exposed to air- as my happen in a car crash where the battery case is damaged -which will produce a major fire that no Cnd fire dept is currently equipped to deal with!)

This doesn’t sound like someone who has- I quote from his reply to me: “Nothing against the owners of electric cars” and has “no problem with me or anyone else buying an electric car or taking advantage of an available public subsidy.”

(Lorrie said he was against the government giving out such a subsidy. Generally Motors has announced that it will LOSE $9,000.00 U.S. on every electric car it manages to sell in California- with the losses made up by higher prices on all other GM products! Sounds like a great way to encourage fraud and fakery when buying a car along the state lines!)

He mentioned a few, very highly priced electric vehicles like the Porsche 918 Spyder BMW I8, Fisker Karma & Tesla Roadster.

These are a fraction of the electric cars sold in Canada.

Strange he didn’t mention cars like the Nissan Leaf, Chevy Volt etc. that have far more substantive sales.

(AS other Sun reporters have noted- the ONLY people supporting electric cars are a few eccentric millionaires and a batch of others who are getting major subsidies at OUR cost!)

The point of using public money to encourage early adopters to move to cleaner technology, is that gas fuelled cars are polluting public air with health-compromising pollution and greenhouse gases leading to global warming.

This does not show that the higher subsidies are capped at $75,000.

(Who cares about which upper limit is more reasonable? Most Cdns think the nine grand GM is offering is Bull-s++t! And comparing Nissan Qashqai to Tesla model 3 prices ain`t helping!)

Wouldn’t it have been better if he said that the government has capped the subsidies of electric cars costing $75,000 and that electric vehicles that cost between $75,000 and$150,000 now have a much lower subsidy of $3,000?

I am a member of a few local electric car clubs/groups and there are many Tesla owners who are not “rich people”.

(Its all a matter of perspective- after all- thousands of cdns on the Sunshine List do not define themselves as rich!)

Although I am sure there are some wealthy Tesla owners out there, many of them are just ordinary middle class people that understand the value of an electric car’s very low operating costs, not to mention the environmental benefits.

I invited Lorrie to attend a meeting or two of any of a number of electric vehicle car clubs/groups to meet the early adopters, as he would then have a better insight towards local electric vehicle owners, their cars and why they are the groundbreakers of the future!

I’m still working on Lorrie to go to one or two of these meetings!

(I aks: Why don’t you quit wasting time with Lorrie and put up a comprehensive list of who is getting what subsidies in exchange for their electric car support?)
