Hmm, what's not really great is ripping a piece of text out of someone's essay and passing it off as your own. In the rest of the English speaking world we have a word for it. Do you know what it is Blackleaf?

That bit about Orwell which you snipped from the Daily Mail article is almost word for word a repeat of something Hannan wrote a year ago in The Telegraph.
It was properly cited.

Sakatchewan also never had a global empire which gave the world the English language,

*Gave* the world the English language? GAVE?!?

Like the way Alexander *gave* Greek to the eastern Mediteranian and Anatolia? Like the way Romans *gave* Latin to western Europe.

Like the way globalizers whose boots you clean with your tongue are giving your grandchildren Mandarin?

... parliamentary democracy,
Oh yeah, Americans really lapped that one up.

... rugby ...
>head swims< Give me one reason why I'm supposed to think that forming a group-hug in order to squeeze myself into some bloke's fat-*ss is a gift?

And Saskatchewan's population is a twenty-oneth that of London alone (Saskatchewan 1 million; Greater London 21 million); whilst the economy of London alone (never mind that of the whole of Great Britain) is 15 times that of Saskatchewan.

In fact, Britain's second-largest city, Birmingham, has a larger population, and an economy twice as large, as Saskatchewan's.

Sakatchewan also never had a global empire which gave the world the English language, parliamentary democracy, habeas corpus, trial by jury, railways, cricket, rugby and the Magna Carta.

Still, you and the guy who green-plussed you won't less these trivial details get in the way......

Can you answer this question?

Why is the Saskatchewan Govt recruiting destitute, chronically unemployed workers from the UK to fill our labour shortage needs?

Good question. You'd think there'd be plenty-enough of those to bring up from the States.

Per capita doesn't apply here? Only in the Olympics?

lol... I love feeding you your words back.

Gutted! Sickened! Shamed!

Yes it does apply. And I'll remind you again that the USA, a nation of 320 million people, got their arses handed back to them by a nation of 23 million. 62-0.

Talk about shameful and embarrassing. It's like a sporting version of Vietnam. You needed the Brits on your side. You would have won then.

Because nobody in Saskatchewan wants to work?

If the British Empire didn't give English to the world, Smart Alec, then who did then?

The Czechs? The Armenians? The Greenlanders?

As I recall from high school history Britain was little more than a suburb of Rome. Probably explains their position in the world.

Maybe it's the 3.6% unemployment rate?

SASKATCHEWAN CONTINUES INTERNATIONAL LABOUR RECRUITMENT
A delegation of Saskatchewan employers is heading to Ireland to recruit high-skilled workers to this province. The Ministry of the Economy and 13 employers will attend the Working Abroad Expo in Dublin March 2 and 3, Cork on March 6, and some will also exhibit in Manchester, United Kingdom March 9 and 10. More than 10,000 qualified candidates in fields including trades, engineering and health sciences are expected to attend the fairs.

*Sigh*... re-read what I said. I didn't say English didn't come from Brits. I asked why you think it's a *gift*.

English was, and still is in many parts of the world, forced down people's throats in order for them to participate in trade-routes monopolized by British, and now American, interests, just like how people used to have to learn Latin or Greek in order to participate in Greaco-Roman trade.

And at the rate things are going the way the globalizers whose boots you lick with your tongue are taking things, your grandchildren are going to be "given" Mandarine.

Why do you think that's a "gift"?

The Normans, Germans, Saxons... and of course the Danes. The Danes gave the Brits a lot more than their influence didn't they? lol

The first Latin phrase I learnt in school was "Britannia parva provincia Romana est."
Translation: Britain is a small Roman province.
The Romans tried (unsuccesfully) to improve gene pools throughout the island.

You should have paid more attention in history.

No need to sigh Omi... it didn't come from the Brits. Sure they ended up speaking it by the time their country was formed but the language was formed before they became England.

Sweden?

It reminds of an English comedian--whose name eludes me--who was having a go at the Americans when one of them got grumpy and yelled from the corwd "If it wasn't for us, you'd all be speaking German!"

The comedian came right back with "So you're implying that we speak the language of our masters then?"

The guy said "Yeah."

And Brit comedian goes--"And what language are you speaking , sir?"

You should read a history book. The Romans ruled Britain for several centuries.

"Suburb" usually means closely located to the city. Britain was a far-flung and wild island. It was always troublesome under Roman rule, particularly Scotland. Austria under the Nazis would be a better "suburb" analogy. The analogy dosn't make sense for Roman Britannia.

Can you suggest a good Mandarin primer? I think Blackleaf really sees a new and improved British invasion. He's not adjusted to the seventy five years old new reality. He's a sad man whose lost an empire. The laurels have turned to dust, he dwells in the long ago.
