I was thinking that if they were to change one letter they could call themselves the Threshers - what with all those grain fields in Manitoba.

I was thinking along the same lines as it would be more appropriate for Winnipeg than the "Jets" and "Thrashers" would be perfect as is because a thrashing machine performs threshing.

Actually, JLM, my thesaurus states thresh(ing) for separating the seed from the plant which is basically what the combine does. Thrash on the other hand, comes back with beating, trouncing, pasting, defeating, etc. - which come to think of it is very apropos for a hockey team. So now I am in a total quandary.

interesting indeed, lol, don't think it will make the top 10
what would the picture be on the front of the sweater? waving wheat? - lol

oh no, that would have to be oklahoma right? !!!!!

a threshing machine I guess, what do they look like, you can see I'm not a prairie
girl, west coast all the way.
oh, I just read jlm's thread, it is called a thrashing machine, hmmm, just can't
see them keeping atlanta's name, I think they would want their own.

I believe you will find that once a team relocates they can change the name as they please. The last team to move and not change the name was the Flames. I hope we get the return of the Jets. Although many in the media are giving this move as a foregone conclusion we just had 3 weeks of the same stories regarding Phoenix and look where they are today. Bettman has made it quite clear he wants teams to stay in the US and wants expansion, if any, to be in the US. I always wonder how this anti-canadian moron gained control of our national sport. Anyway, I am hoping but not holding my breath. I would not be surprised at all if Bettman pulled another miracle from his ass and the team moved in the states or even stayed in Atlanta.

The downside of the move is it is too late to have realignment this year so Winnipeg would be in the SE div and have to travel excessively. Plus Atlanta sucks as a team with little prospect of being a playoff contender in the next few years. We would have been much better served by getting the coyotes as they are a strong team and will only improve for a while yet. It is almost like Winnipeg is being set up to fail so when other teams need to move the argument can be made against them moving to Canada.

I don't quite agree with you concerning how good this team is, they made big strides this season when
they got the chicago blackhawks players, and also with evander kane, who will be a big superstar for
years, they are on the upswing, and with another pretty good draft pick, and a couple more transactions
in the off season, they should make a run for the playoffs next season.

I believe it was also atlanta who were the flames, then the team fled for calgary,
now they are losing a team again, it seems.

This is an article about the Cannucks that I came across while trolling through newspapers this morning. Thought I would share it with Cannuck fans on the forum. Any comments?

Down Goes Brown: Don’t make Kesler angry | Posted Sports | National Post

"So if you are a Canadian hockey fan and find yourself still on the fence about rooting for the Canucks, consider the following list of good reasons to throw your support behind the nation’s last hope.

• Geologists and historians assure us that, in the strictest technically sense, Vancouver is part of Canada.

• Manny Malhotra has been a feel-good story as he attempts to resume his playing career after a devastating eye injury, instead of just going straight into refereeing like anyone else would have done.

• Admit it, it would be fun to watch Roberto Luongo win a Stanley Cup and still be roundly criticized for not doing it “clutchily” enough.

• If you do decide to root against them and Mike Gillis finds out, uh oh, here comes another press conference.

• Odds are at some point a Canadian fanbase will watch its team win the Stanley Cup and immediately become completely insufferable towards the rest of the country; at least if it’s Vancouver, the rest of us will get a three hours’ break first thing every morning.

• If you can get on the Canucks’ good side, they might let you help design the new logo they will inevitably be coming out with in the next year or two.

• It has been a long time since hockey lovers around the country joined together in pursuit of a common cause, unless you count getting Winnipeg fans’ hopes up yet again and then laughing at them.

• It has been inspirational watching the Canucks continue to succeed despite every player on the roster having whatever that disease is where you keel over dramatically the second anybody brushes up against you.

• Maple Leaf fans might really enjoy seeing a team built by Brian Burke and Dave Nonis win something for a change.

• The Stanley Cup final is expected to wrap up in early June, which would be good timing for Vancouver since it would coincide with the scheduled end of that Markus Naslund jersey retirement ceremony.

• Ottawa fans would no doubt love to see Sharks star Danny Heatley come up short in a devastating playoff loss, since it would remind them of the good old days.

• No matter what team you’re a fan of, you just can’t root against Ryan Kesler. No, really, you can’t. If you try, the next time you close your medicine cabinet door he’ll be standing right behind you.

• It would be a nice change for Canuck fans’ ever-present persecution complex to be unfounded because the rest of Canada is rooting for them, instead of being unfounded because the rest of Canada doesn’t care.

• Sure, go ahead and get Canuck fans mad at you if you want, but good luck nailing that big sales presentation when you have two guys in green bodysuits humping the boardroom window.

that is priceless, love it.

the only part that made my skin crawl, was the reference to dave nonis and brian burke having any
part in building this team, draft picks have to be developed, just like they do in detroit, they
only drafted, didn't develope, and the team that has been built around some draft picks has created
the team we have today, and gillis has developed an amazing program of fitness and diet and even
travel health care to keep the players at the top of their game all season.

I know I should have taken all of it with a grain of salt, and had a good laugh, which I did with the
rest, but there is always a 'scritchy scratchy' feeling about burke, nonis and anything toronto.

The rumours are - and i'm not saying they are true, that in the toronto area, there is 'no' good
feeling at all toward what canucks are doing, but then, same would apply if things were the opposite,
I guarantee it.

those green men are becoming more famous every day, right after the whining from
the nhl and healey on hnc, they vaulted into stardom, I was even getting tired of
them, but now I cheer them on. lol

I see malhotra is now practicing with the team, in full uniform, (non contact), so he is making some
good progress, although some say he will 'not' play this year, as he has to have two more procedures
done to his eyes.

But the media will not leave this alone, of course they suspect that the team is hoping he will get
into the playoffs at some point, but that doesn't seem realistic to me.

And even if he does get closer and closer, I can't see him being in good enough shape to keep up, and
I am very pleased with how lapierre is doing in his place, and would not want to see him pulled out
of that 3rd line center spot, he is also good at face offs, and the rest of his play is just fine, he
is skating hard, he is fast, and has lots of passion now for this team, he is now a true part of the
team, he belongs.
I have criticized him in the past, before he began making such progress, and now
he is a big part of this team.

Well, I don't think Boston was quite expecting that. 13 seconds.

looks like boston are finding their game now, they're playing much better, but thomas isn't as
goalproof as he usually is.
tampa just scored p. play goal, went right thru thomas. 4-3 boston, half-way thru the game.

One thing to consider is that if the Canucks were to go to the final and win I don't think Manny would have his name on the cup. I believe there is some requirement about playing a certain amount of playoff games in the first 3 rounds or 1 in the finals. Maybe they will dress him for that 1 game in the finals, even if he doesn't get on the ice, so his name will be engraved. I am not sure about the requirements but I am pretty sure you have to participate in the playoffs, but I could be wrong.

It will be good to get both those teams tuckered out for the final round. We want a 7 game series. I think S.J. should be done in 5.

Ok, I just looked it up and the rules changed. A player must appear in 41 reg season games or 1 game in the finals to get his name engraved. Looks like Manny doesn't have to suit up in the final.

On another note Boston just scored again...6-3....9 goals in 2 periods, what a shootout!

If Boston plays like they did in that 2nd period, Vancouver wouldn't stand a chance.

to Winnipeg and got something like 1800 replies but the name that I liked best was put out by one of the TSN commentators. He thought that the team name could reflect the history of the French in Manitoba and call themselves the Winnipeg Voyagers. I think the name may be even more apt considering the very long distances that the team will have to travel considering their placement in the Southeast Division - at least for the coming season. Those boys are going to rack up some huge frequent flyer points.

Oh and yes, I really believe this is a done deal.

tampa bay coach said he is glad his team didn't win this game, because they didn't deserve it, very
unusual comment, as through out the year, many teams win games they don't deserve and lose games they
deserved to win, well, thats hockey, and sometimes the bounces don't go your way, or do, so just walk
away happy with the win, next game you might deserve the win, and won't get it, -so ,'wise' up coach.

:
As this game went along I think boston found their 'hunger' and began playing play off hockey, and tyler segiun fed that hunger, so now this series has found its legs, and could be a long one, as I think
boston has risen to the occasion, and won't make it easy for tampa bay any longer.

I'm looking forward to canucks defeating san jose, won't look past that point just now, just like vineault
says, one game at a time, and while we aren't noticing this series, and looking to the finals, we might
find that we don't have a team playing any longer.

GO CANUCKS GO

Tim Thomas gave the fans some heart-stopping and disappointing moments tonight as he allowed at least two easy goals. He must have taken a Red Bull for the 3rd because I haven't a clue how he saw some of those
Thomas was all over the map tonight. Maybe he just needs 3 periods to warm up as he was unbelievable in some of those saves in the 3rd tonight. I heard that Boston is the only team left in the play-offs who haven't used their back-up goalie - maybe its time they thought about it. The Bruins should have won the game 6 - 3 tonight.
____________________________________________________________________________________
He was a very wacky goalie tonight, and first game too. I noticed how many times he stopped the puck but
had no idea where it was, and scrambled around while the puck was free and vulnerable.

He must play better, the game tonight should have been much easier to win for boston, and it was because of
him that the score became 6-5, they are lucky he didn't lose it for them.

But, while saying that, and as you mentioned, he also made some spectacular saves.

Its certainly looking like its done but we thought that about Pheonix too. I am rooting for a team in Winnipeg though, I know Hamilton and Quebec City are wanting teams too so maybe if the Coyotes do move next year...

I can't say I am a bug fan of Voyagers, just doesn't seem right, I am stuck on Jets and that would be my vote but I'm not in Winnipeg and don't get a vote. I agree about voyagers being and apt fit though..LOL
