Good plan, we'll just build more and more houses for them every few years, and as long as they are comfortable, great. How long does this go on for?

That kind of attitude will solve nothing. Contempt is something they don't need, a willingness to LISTEN may help. Getting to the bottom of the problem is the start of the solution.

As long as they want to stay there, I am sure some of them would like to live farther south like those European invaders do that through them off their native lands. Just cannot afford it anymore. How about Canada give them total rights to all minerals found on their lands. See a posibility of being self sufficient. If need be give them the same rights European Canadians who are on welfare, public service recieve.

I'm not sure that giving them anything besides support will accomplish anything in the long run except to set precedents. Working with them with mutual benefits in mind would be better I think. Whatever the solution is to be, the more they are involved the better.

Considering the average lifespan of a house there is 5 to 8 years, it will go on forever.

Unless some people put some thought into it.

When you see the pictures of the horrible living conditions, a lot of the crappy conditions the houses seem to be due to damage or lack of maintenance. Holes don't mysteriously appear in the walls by themselves. Why can't people look after anything?

More jobs of course would be a better long term solution, but that does not solve the immediate situation. How much would it cost to upgrade or build them a small 4 room house?

Lots, one of the reasons some houses look like they are built from scraps is because they are.Wood is hard to come by and you would be amazed at what you can build from scrap 2x4's and pieces of plywood.I have seen what I thought were ice fishing shacks that were actually home for some.

This would be expensive but very simple to do.You would need first air to promise a week of airtime with their c130 hercs and some carpenters that work in those conditions no matter how cold it is.
The logistics are brutal but if you know the right people it's not impossible. We build nice cabins in exploration camps much farther north then this no problems.

Among the many photos of the housing crisis in Attawapiskat there is a native man claiming that obvious fire damage on his house had not been
fixed in twenty years,
Not once in all the complaints did I see anyone asking for lumber and a hammer and nails to fix the problems Surely there is a few carpenters among the 2000 people who live there. These people have to learn to do a few things themselves.

Maybe we should send the Army in with the lumber needed to build enough basic houses to go around. I don't mean shacks. I mean
houses.

For now they could at least fly in some tents, outland is in Winnipeg and they outfit all kinds of camps in the arctic and they do it very quickly,it would take 2 days to have the materials on the ground there.
They can be assembled on site or flown in by chopper one at a time.
Same with weatherhaven tents,2 guys can put up 2 of them in a day.
I've lived in them at -67. Short term solution for now.

What do they heat these tents with? Wood, propane?

Tents? They've got an arena, if they want shelter. What good would tents be, I thought that was part of the 'horrific' living conditions, they were living in tents already.

Right, listening will work, and we'll continually shovel money in their direction so houses will continaully be built and collapse every few years. How will this thing called listening improve their long-term housing?

You can give me contempt, but send a cheque for thousands each year please also.

I did some asking about the life span of homes in those conditions.

The overall consensus is, either they're using crappy material, or poor construction. There's no reason a structure shouldn't be able to last at least 25+ years in the area, if you build them to stand the conditions.

And maintain them.

The guy I heard on cbc radio mentioned that mold is the big issue, apparently nobody understands ventilation or something.

When you heat with propane space heaters (which I've been told is common practice there), mold is going to be an issue whether or not the building is sufficiently ventilated. It produces large amounts of moisture.

There needs to be some serious overhauling in the overall mentality there.

Diesel, gravity fed so no power required. You have a 45 gallon drum outside sitting on a stand and a line runs inside for the heater, the old style like this will drain a drum in 2 days at -50 so we have a skimmer behind a snowmobile with fuel drum on it that fuels it up every 2nd day.Theres no trees in most of the north, thats why wood is so scarce. This was my first gig as a camp manager at discovery camp north of Rankin inlet, thats why they gave me a gun when I stepped off the chopper.
This is the only pic I have of the old style diesel heater, the new ones are much better.

The guys from Cambridge bay used to bring their air conditioners to their cabins at camp around july.
It gets warm in the 3 month summer, our camp south of Cambridge bay this year had a warmer summer then here at home in southern Alberta.

I just wish we could hear more from the people of Attawapiskat, JLM, not the Chief or band council members. We might actually get a better understanding of what is happening and what is not.
