So did the Romans, to a lesser extent.
The problem comes from the Greek word "arsenokoites". Arsenokoites is the Greek translation of a similar sounding Aramaic word that escapes me at the moment. In both Aramaic and Classic Greek, the term meant "temple prostitution" which was a major way many temples raised funds.
Where the error starts to occur is when one literally translates the Greek word arsenokoites. arseno means "man" and koites means "bed". In the vernacular of the time it basically meant "he slept with her", the wink being there was little if any sleeping going on.
What happened at some point during the translation of the Bible from Greel to Latin was "koites" was confused to mean the same as the Latin word "coitus". So if you then take "arseno" and "koites" and literally translate it into Latin it basically comes across as "man sex".


In fact, the word homosexual is the only word I'm aware of in the English language whose two roots come from two different languages.
Now, if we look at the verse in Leviticus where it supposedly claims homosexuality is an abomination, it is not actually talking about homosexuality. "If a man lays with another man as he would lay with a woman, it is an abomination unto the eyes of the Lord" actually refers to the act of bisexualism. For if a man has never lain with a woman because he's simply not attracted to them, how could he engage in an abomination if he sleeps with another man that he IS attracted to.


There's a reason for this and it all must be taken into context. Things like pulling out and masturbation were sins as well. Getting a bj from your wife was a sin. The sin was the waste of the man's seed. It needed to be planted in fertile ground in order to increase the population of the Israelites. An absolute necessity for a fledgling country.
This law also tears apart the later restriction the Church put on pre-marital sex. In the OT days it was encouraged and customary to have sex with your prospective wife to make sure she was fertile. Because of course as we all know, it's only women that are to blame for infertility problems. Naturally this didn't mean you could just hump anything that was nailed down or couldn't crawl away, it was simply to "make sure" you were going to be able to produce children as man and wife. Many a marriage took place where the bun was in the oven and well on its way to being fully baked.
