A Sikh man facing deportation from Canada for hijacking an Indian airliner 24 years ago says he's a changed man and should be allowed to remain in Canada to practice law.
Parminder Singh Saini speaks with CBC-TV.
(CBC)
In 1984, Parminder Singh Saini was the ringleader of a militant Sikh student organization that hijacked an Indian Airlines plane with 264 people on board. They threatened to blow up the plane if their demands for an independent homeland for Sikhs in India weren't met.
Parminder Singh Saini speaks with CBC-TV.
(CBC) After negotiations, the plane landed safely in Lahore, Pakistan. No one was seriously hurt and the hijackers surrendered.
Saini was convicted and sentenced to death, although that was later commuted to life in prison. He spent 10 years in jail in Pakistan.
In 1994, Saini, using a false name, came to Canada and applied for refugee status. He says he holds no passport because India stripped him of his following the hijacking.
When Canadian authorities discovered Saini was in the country, they ordered him deported.
While in Canadian custody, Saini received a pardon from Pakistan, wiping out the hijacking conviction in that country.
However, a Canadian judge later ruled on Saini's case, writing: "The conviction in this case was for an offence so abhorrent to Canadians, and arguably so terrifying to the rest of the civilized world, that our court is not required to respect a foreign pardon of such an offence."
A Canadian deportation order for Saini is still active.

He's a criminal who lied his way in. So what if he hasn't been caught doing anything else - for the last thirteen years he has been comitting the continuing offense of living here illegally! He hasn't behaved - this is an ongoing criminal offense.

Out with the trash.

I can't generate too much sympathy for someone who hijacked an airplane and threatened to kill the passengers. Anybody who lies to get into the country should be thrown out. There are lots of people who want to immigrate who didn't hijack any airplanes.

We can't let every jackass bring his lovely little war to Canada......ever hear of Air India? Want to know why it happened in Canada?

I'll tell you.....because we tolerate the kind of crap this guy is dealing........

I like the this part of the article "remain in Canada to practice law".

That wouldn't give our legal system much credibility.

um, was it an Air Pakistan jet he hijacked? Then where the hell do they get off pardoning him? Has India pardoned him? And if he's wanted there, shouldn't we return them their criminal?

Or maybe he does deserve a second chance? In Pakistan.

Under the law he is rehabilitated since he has not commit a single crime in the last five years and he faces the danger of death or jail if he is sent back to India, thus he has the right to remain in the country. I salute this man for what he has done and I hope he continues to accomplish the goals which he set twenty years back.

What many people dont recognize is that this was after the occurance of Operation Bluestar in India. It was during this event that the Hindu army barged into the Sikh's holiest shrine and killed many innocent people. It was an act of genocide to erase a culture and way of life that had a great influence over the people in India and began to show great political power. During this time, Sikh's felt robbed that they did not have an identity; a land they could call their own. They were cheated during the partition of India and Pakistan. The aftermath of this was the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi (the current prime minister at the time who ordered the attack) by angered Sikh body guards. After the assassination, Sikh children were killed, women were raped and killed, and the bodies of Sikh men were returned in truck loads unidentified.

There is a saying from their tenth guru,"When all other means have failed, it is lawful to take up the sword." It is the obligation of Sikhs as a part of their religion to defend others from oppression and fight for the freedom of others.

Keep in mind, the Sikh religion advocates peace, equality of all people (Women, elimination of caste systems), and the acceptance of all religions as beads on the golden thread of faith. The Golden Temple itself is build entirely out of gold and it consists of four doors that face to the North, East, West and South. The doors are to welcome anyone from anywhere around the world regardless of religion. It is the youngest religion in the world and started by Guru Nanak Dev Ji (1469-1539). The military order known as Khalsa was founded during the rule of the Mughal Empire where Hindus and Sikhs were being forced to convert to Islam. Khalsa strongly advocates the theory of Saint-Soldiers, where one must be a Saint before a Soldier.

My message was not intended to alone praise any religion but to provide an insight as to why this man took these actions. Personally, I think it takes alot of balls to spend 24 years in jail and be tortured and come to Canada with the will to earn an education to fight with the sword of words. Furthermore, I could also clear some misconceptions about the religion since many people confuse Sikhs with Muslims.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

.

He has commited crimes in the last 5 years. He has been living in Canada ILLEGALLY under a false identity every day. Allowing him to remain is an insult to every immigrant that has gone through the rigorous process of coming to Canada legally.

It really doesn't matter why he hijacked that plane. It's unacceptable to us, no matter what the 10th guru has to say on the matter. This man knew he wouldn't be allowed entry to Canada, that our immigration would reject him, so he lied his way in. That's illegal. Why should we allow immigrants who break our laws to live in our country?

btw, he was only in jail for 10 years. He is extremely lucky he wasn't simply executed for what he did.
