MONTREAL — Leaders of Quebec’s sovereignty movement are gearing up for a fight with the federal government over its decision to intervene in a provincial court case challenging a law at the heart of their cause.

The head of the Bloc Quebecois, Daniel Paille, contends the federal justice department is infringing on Quebec’s right to make its own decisions.

The province’s Parti Quebecois government, meanwhile, is planning a news conference for Sunday to lay out its own objections.

Alexandre Cloutier, the PQ’s minister of intergovernmental affairs, said Saturday on Twitter that Ottawa’s actions demanded an “exceptional response.”

Sigh. Again? Did they ever stop wanting to?

They alone do not get to dictate the terms of how that would happen. Divorce is a messy game. Negotiation is a necessary component. The entirety of Canada has invested a lot of time, effort and money into the province of Quebec and it would be one hell of task to extricate them from the nation as a whole. So before that happens, if it ever should happen, they'd better make damn sure they have the full support of all the people within the province, not this stupid 50 plus one.

I have no problem avec separation... They wanna go, then it's best not to stand in anyone's way.

Settle-up the debts, turn in your passports and buy any lands owned by the Feds...

Please, let them go. I encourage all Quebec residents to vote to separate. Divide the national debt per capita and Quebec gets their share. Transfer any federal land after they pay for it. Give them all the treaties with FNs in Quebec and send them merrily on their way.

Well, separate already ... and take your damned drama with you.

And pay for assets before they leave.

When they leave they will get a piece approximately quadrilateral in shape with its southernmost boundary along the north shore of the St. Lawrence River, of a size to be negotiated, but not to exceed 110% of the size of PEI. The shortest arm of the quadrilateral will be on the St. Lawrence. The new Quebec will be in relatively unpopulated land to ensure that Canadians are not inconvenienced, and Canada will provide one all-weather road up to one boundary for access. We choose where. It might originate in Labrador.

Their debt will be 1/14th of the national debt representing their share of Canada's debt for all provinces and territories plus Canada, minus an offset for the infrastructure they don't have in their new "bloc".

No, their debt should be the national debt divided by 35 million then multiplied by the population of Quebec. Only fair to split it on a per capita basis.

Since they never signed onto the constitution, seems to me they are not really part of Canada anyway. I'm thinking the Canadian government has been trying to buy them back into confederation, so I am beginning to wonder who the stupid ones really are.

I suppose that we can settle this out on the Plains of Abraham... Again

I have to agree with cannuck, they aren't going anywhere. Petty saber rattling to see what more they can squeeze from the Feds.
