Health Care is in crisis all across Canada.

Here in NB, we have it BAD.

This happened in Fredericton.

Working at my local hospital, it's stressful as hell, and we're only open 8 hours now thanks to lack of staff.

And while blame is put on the Feds, this isn't just on them. Nor do I blame them for wanting to put conditions on any further money sent to the provinces.

The Premiers met in BC this week to discuss the issue.

I've little hope any of them had any ideas because it seems that while they want to 'do' things, they don't ask the people who are directly involved, rather they leave it to outsiders or people who have been out of the profession for a while.

I've personally thought that a two tier system may be our only option at this point. I do NOT want to see a US style system, but our current one just isn't working anymore.

Wife has been having a few issues. Needed an CT scan, MRI and then a biopsy taken. All got scheduled within a week or 2. This is in Ontario.
Her sister is in BC, needed some similar tests. She has been waiting 3 months so far.
Things are not the same all over it seems.

No, it's worse in some places, better in others. But it's still 'bad' overall.

Dr. Clark is respected around here. Our small hospital would do - and sometimes still does - day surgeries for the lower risk patients, to help him catch up, but that's not doable anymore unless it's local and even then it's rare we see him anymore, or the other Ortho surgeons. One of our lab techs needed a replacement done - knee I believe - and she had to wait over 2 years for it and by that time, she needed both done.

Yesterday, I think the BC court of appeal ruled that not getting medical services in a timely matter does not violate a patient's charter rights. Dr. Day, who has been pushing for two tiered health care for decades, is probably taking it to the Supreme court. The fact that the rich can go to less communist countries to get needed medical services doesn't appear to enter into the equation.

I totally disagree with the court; medical services in a timely matter should be a right, as it could be a life or death situation; it's at least a quality of life issue.

As for people leaving, if that's what they wish and they've the money for it, sure, go ahead. Until the system is fixed in Canada all over, this might be the only solution for some. That said, the care they get out of country may not be what they think and in the end cost more and not just in money, but so long as a patient is aware of that then why should they be stopped?

If the government can't provide in a timely manner we should have the option of private care. IN a way we already do. Doctors offices are private businesses that operate on a fee for service that is mostly, but not always paid by the government. Even some government mandated services are not covered by medical and one must pay out of pocket.

That'd make sense. France has private practitioners, and is usually rated the "best" health-care system in the world.

Apparently Higgs thinks 12 hours is too long of a wait time...

But then being Premier, he doesn't have to wait like regular people if he has an issue, so it's not like he'd know it's been like this for YEARS in some hospitals...

The hospital I work at has (a "rural" one) had to close for several days this year, the first it's ever had to happen, due to shortage of staff - no one to work, Covid - which puts more pressure on the bigger city hospital, increasing the wait time there. We're lucky in that we're only 15 minutes from the Cumberland Regional Hospital in Amherst, but it's still not enough as THEIR wait times are bad as well, and staff issues...
