Heritage Canada feels that it should be sung at special events, but not necessarily every day, and that singing is preferred over listening to a recording of it. Playing it every day in school is pointless overkill for no reason.
That's not what I read.
Playing of anthems at events
There is no specific rule as to when it is appropriate to sing the national anthem at an event. It is up to the organizers to determine if "O Canada" will be sung at the beginning or at the end of a ceremony. If two anthems are to be played at the beginning of an event, "O Canada" should be played first followed by the other one. When anthems are played at the end of an event, "O Canada" should be played last.
I don't consider it overkill, pointless or otherwise. Everyone living in Canada should know this anthem and be able to sing or at least speak the words when it is played.
School seems to be a likely place for youth to learn something. Granted it's little more than to produce more sadate workers for the machine, but I don't see any reason at all for the children born or raised in this country not to learn the Canadian anthem at school.
I can't see many parents managing to peel the kids off the couch and distract them from Xbox360 long enough to explain what an anthem is, why we have one or how to sing it.
As it is, fewer and fewer people these days know enough to stand the hell up when it's played let alone men taking off their baseball cap showing how much they heart NY.
Like CPR, don't wait until you have to perform it to learn it.
Is it too much to ask?
