Conservative leaders usually jump ship before their downfall like federal Progressive Conservative Brian Mulroney and Ontario PC leader Mike Harris they saw the writing on the wall and when Harper sees it he will leave.

Charisma- that's the whole god damn problem which we obviously didn't learn after 1968. What we need is brains, patience, guts, endurance and a little honesty wouldn't hurt.

Liberals went with brains in previous runs at this government, to no avail. Bob Rae, Stephane Dion and Michael Ignatieff were all smarter than your average bear.

Shoot the greens and you'd have an economy.

Some of us shoot back.

Some would beg to Differ I suppose, Rae ran Ontario into the ground, Dion was too passive, Ignatieff was an unconvincing import!

Regardless of thier alleged flaws, they were all pretty bright--Rae was a Rhodes scholar, Dion and Ignatieff were both academics.

Personally, I don't think individual personality traits have all that much to do with it. After all, most of the experts were convinced that Harper would never be PM because he lacked charisma. Trudeau will probably fare better (in my opjinon) simply because there's more of a negative vibe around the Harper government than there has been in the past.

Or as my dad says--it'll put you at the table with decent pocket pair. After that, it's how you play it.

We could wax on about the necessary personality traits of a successful leader, but, having studied that a little myself, I've come to the conclusion that leaders don't really share a common profile. Some traits--such as optimism, adventurism aggression, and narcissism--appear more than others, but there are too many counterexamples to say much categorically about the make-up of leaders.

Some modern research seems to indicate that a lot of them are just lucky.

During my many years of being the "hydrant" and being the "dog", I know one of the most annoying traits of people who are supposedly leaders, is that many of them will NOT make a decision.
