While speaking to Catholic youth who were about to receive the late Pope John Paul II Justin Trudeau urged the youth present to reject 'old men with old ideas.'
On values:
"I always say, if at a certain point, I believe that Canada was really the Canada of Stephen Harper – that we were going against abortion, and we were going against gay marriage, and we were going backwards in 10,000 different ways – maybe I would think about wanting to make Quebec a country... On technology:
When a federal Liberal candidate in a recent byelection came under fire from local vets over a link purporting to help vets but in fact linked to a party donation site Justin Trudeau responded: "If there was a problem with the website link then I know that it was done in good faith."
On Canadian unity:
"Certainly when we look at the great prime ministers of the 20th century, those that really stood the test of time, they were MPs from Quebec … This country — Canada — it belongs to us."
On the gun registry:
"I voted to keep the firearms registry a few months ago and if we had a vote tomorrow I would vote once again to keep the long-gun registry." He made the admission during a campaign stop at a suburban Montreal mall. Also: "The long-gun registry, as it was, was a failure and I’m not going to resuscitate that."
On gun safety:
"The RCMP guarding me had handguns and I got to play with them every now and then."
On gun control:
"I grew up with long guns, rifles and shotguns. ... I do not feel that there’s any huge contradiction between keeping our cities safe from gun violence and gangs, and allowing this important facet of Canadian identity which is having a gun."
On language:
On December 14, 2011, Liberal MP Justin Trudeau called Environment Minister Peter Kent "a piece of s---." This came during a heated debate in the House of Commons over Ottawa's decision to drop out of the Koyoto accord. Trudeau later apologized
