The Conservatives’ platform commitment is to end the allowances gradually over a three-year period. That probably means paying 75 per cent of the present amount the first year, 50 per cent the second year, 25 per cent the third year, and nothing thereafter. Thus, between passage of the budget and the next election, currently expected for October, 2015, each party will receive 150 per cent of its current annual subsidy, as compared to 400 per cent if the fiscal regime were not changed.

Some day, the opposition will thank Mr. Harper - The Globe and Mail

The Liberals ain't dead yet.....far from it.

Tax payers will still be funding parties even after the per-vote subsidy is killed. In fact, candidates who get above 10% of the vote consistently can get a 90% political donation subsidy, because these laws will still be on the books:

Those aren't slated to be cut...if it's defensible to cut the per vote subsidy, why aren't the other subsidies being cut as well? And why should we have subsidies based on percentage of the vote? That's no different than giving money per vote. In fact it's worse because the remaining subsidies will favour some parties over others.

The Tories say they are doing this because they have to spend wisely? BS. They are doing this so they can be the only party to have power and then we have a dicatorship as a government. Right after the budget was annnounced the Tories raised the portion of what the taxpayers pay towards the MP's pension. Taxpayers are now paying 5.50 to their $1!! Why? They make more money than most Canadians and their pensions are outrages. So when you hear they want to spend our tax dollars wisely, beware, there's something else going on. Ever wonder how the Tories got to a 56 deficit, ask you MP's I be they can't tell where the money went.

How can anyone argue that the Conservatives are trying to bankrupt the Liberals when all they are doing is ensuring that none of the political parties use money that isnt given to them through someones own choice? NEWSFLASH!!!! it is NOT their money it belongs to all us tax payers!!!!!! Taking away something that is not theirs in the first place can hardly be an excuse for Bankruptcy.

I see it now when they (the Liberal Leadership - if there is one that stays constant for more than a year or two!!) stand in front of the Bankruptcy Judge.....

"Sorry Your Honour, but the money that was coming from taxpayers pockets has dried up and the money coming from Canadians who genuinely wish to support us isn't enough to pay our expenses ...let alone our bills!"

Maybe if they get their act together and become a party again that aligns with the interests of those they are trying to represent, maybe just maybe their support may climb, their membership may climb and who knows their bank balance may climb....

Political parties will still be getting tax payers' money. Go to the links in post #103.
