I wouldn't spend too much time engaging with her. You will never be able to arrive at a satisfactory conclusion to any debate or discussion you have with her because she already has the only complete and correct answer to ANY subject. I like to throw out an idea and if anyone wants to fine tune it that's fine with me but from her (and several others) you won't get that...……….it's "black" or it's "white" and no shades in between! I don't like insulting people but she brings it on herself!
lol That's funny.

Ottawa Police Opposes Mass Gun Confiscations Sought by Liberals

Police across Canada reject gun bans against PAL holders.

4 Mar 2020

TheGunBlog.ca — The Ottawa Police Service opposes the mass gun confiscations planned by Canada’s governing Liberal Party against federally licensed firearm owners, joining a growing national police movement against the crackdown.
Why Police Oppose Gun Bans

  • Waste of police money and energy
  • Useless for public safety
  • Risky for public and police
Better to Invest in Safety
Seizing guns from safe and responsible owners uses money and officer resources that could go to community safety and stopping violent gangs, the city police told the Ottawa Police Services Board on March 2 in response to a City Council motion.
The objections to gun bans from police in the national capital is a new hit to the Liberals.
Ottawa officers are joining the federal firearm regulator and more than a dozen police leaders from Vancouver to Toronto to Halifax in opposing the party’s mass confiscations-incarcerations against honest Canadians. (See list below.)
‘Cost, Energy, Personnel’
“The cost, the energy that is spent, the personnel, those could be spent on other programs that have greater value, such as neighbourhood policing,” said Carl Cartright, the Ottawa Police head of the guns and gangs unit and drug squad, as quoted by the Ottawa Citizen.
All Guns Are Banned Already
Stopping unauthorized or unsafe gun users has been a police priority since before Canada confederated.
Today, all guns are banned for everyone without a firearm Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) authorized by the police.
Anyone without a permit caught buying, selling, having or traveling with any gun risks jail.
‘Attack’ on PAL Holders
The Liberals are preparing new federal laws that specifically target PAL holders for the forced surrender of a quarter-million of their rifles, and potentially all of their handguns through municipal bans.
None of the policies aims at violent offenders.
The plans go against the regulator in charge of approving and tracking Canada’s 2.2 million licensed men and women.
The opposition Conservative Party calls the Liberal measures an “attack” on hunters, farmers, sport shooters and other responsible Canadians.
Ottawa Police Chief Peter Sloly and his peers across the country have rejected the illusion of quick fixes such as bans. They call for effective systemic and community approaches.
Blue Vs. Blue

Any ban would force Canada’s 70,000 police to confiscate gear from each other, as well as from their families, friends and neighbours.
Officers often own handguns, rifles and shotguns for personal use, separate from the duty firearms they are required to carry for personal and public safety.
King Vs. PAL Holders
The Ottawa Police presented its analysis of mass confiscations to the Police Services Board in response to an amended motion last June by Councillor Rawlson King.
King initially proposed measures including paying people to voluntarily turn in their firearms, and requesting that: “the sale and possession of handguns in the City of Ottawa be banned.”
In addition to squandering police resources, such policies would threaten many of the city’s 50,000 or so PAL holders and their families with jail unless they leave town or surrender their gear.
Wasteful and Ineffective
A slide from the police presentation to the Police Services Board further suggests new confiscations or voluntary turn-ins would be wasteful and ineffective for boosting safety.
“Efficacy is low,” said a bullet point on a slide titled “Gun Buy Back.” “Resources can be better used in crime prevention initiatives.”

The public wants handguns and assault rifles banned - not the Liberal party.

As usual the gun nuts have to try to misrepresent the truth of the matter.

Seems to me the police were also for keeping the long gun registry.

"Overall Key Findings
There are polarized views on a potential ban and limiting access: Overall, participants were strongly polarized on the issue of banning handguns and assault-style firearms. The stakeholder views expressed in two of the engagement channels - the in-person dialogues and written submissions - provided a variety of perspectives both opposed to and in support of a ban. In contrast, most questionnaire respondents (representing a self-selected group of Canadians) were opposed to a ban.

Target crime and focus on enforcement: Many participants felt strongly that a ban would target law-abiding owners, rather than illicit firearms, and would not greatly impact crime reduction (particularly gang violence). As a result, many called for enhanced enforcement capacity for law enforcement and border services, as well as harsher punishments for firearms trafficking and gun-related crime.

Address underlying causes of firearm violence: One point of consensus among the diverse perspectives is the need to address the socioeconomic conditions that can lead to gun violence, which requires more support for community-level programs and initiatives. These factors include poverty, a lack of education or employment opportunities, lack of mental health supports and social exclusion.

Collect and share relevant data on gun crime: There is a need to improve the ongoing collection and sharing of data on gun crime, particularly in terms of sources of illicit firearms and the types of crime being committed. It was expressed that data is critical for supporting law enforcement and border agencies efforts, as well as informing policy and legislation.

Willingness for collaboration with the firearms community/industry: Many stakeholders representing various aspects of the firearms community want the opportunity to be more engaged and to collaborate with the federal government to develop solutions on this issue.

Need a multi-faceted approach: A wide range of approaches and ideas were discussed, which suggests that a multi-faceted approach is needed to address this issue – rather than implementing a ban in isolation." - https://www.publicsafety.gc.ca/cnt/rsrcs/pblctns/2019-rdcng-vlnt-crm-dlg/index-en.aspx

Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa among other cities want to ban hand guns and assault weapons.

The support for it has been shown in every survey done and more importantly the request has been made by the mayors.

The federal government is in the position of having to deal with the request.

The Mayor of Montreal last December on the topic of a recent road rage shooting on Montreal:

"I want us to stand strong and talk loud about Canada as a safe place, Quebec as a safe place, Montreal as a safe place. To me, it always brings [to mind] the importance of having a better control of guns and who owns and how they own them,"

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/ecole-polytechnique-anniversary-mayor-plante-1.5382534

labeling the current grass roots movement to enact strict gun law in Canada as a "gun grab" is simply a way to diminish the argument itself.

People in mjor cities are concerned about gun violence and they have every right and reason to be.

As have the leftard anti-gun babies. 65. 65 is the HIGHEST total people murdered by someone with a long gun in a single year and that was in 2017. We don't know how many of those 65 were killed with a semi-automatic rifle but it's a pretty safe bet it's fewer than 65. By comparison, over 300 people were killed in distracted driving accidents, at least 78 of them were the result of texting and driving.
No bans on cell phones in cars though. Just measley little fines and temporary suspensions.

Once again, the ALT-left douche weasels prove they don't give a shit about people being killed, they only care when there's a firearm involved because they don't like/own any themselves. So in usual ALT-left authoritarian fashion, they declare no one else should be allowed to have any.

203 deaths by bladed weapon in 2017. Still waiting for that call for national knife control. Hell, when it comes to preventable deaths in Canada, semi-automatic rifles are statistically insignificant. Even when it comes to homicide method semi-auto rifles rank pretty low.

For the year 2017:

Stabbings: 203
Handguns: 145
Beatings: 108
Long guns (Semi-auto and single shot): 65
Semi-auto rifles: < 65.

Now, do tell us why semi-auto rifles need to be banned. And I don't wanna hear crap about how nobody needs one. I don't think it's up to you to determine what someone else's needs are. If we wanna play that game, nobody needs the highly destructive, wasteful and health risking fast food industry either and yet here we are.

This is your chance to give a well thought out, intelligent, reasoned, rational fact-based argument as to why you think semi-automatic rifles should be banned. But will you take it?

It's a rainbow of funny.
JLM is just bitter and a wee bit jealous because he knows I'm more intelligent than he.

Umm - that would be very debatable. I've probably been around longer than you have for starters, but I'll give you one thing, you probably are on a couple of matters. :) Enjoy the day and don't trip over yourself.

Programs and initiatives are the scary parts...………….that means GOVERNMENT again, cost prohibitive. People have to be encouraged to do more things for themselves. Just enforce the laws on the books & hit the offenders hard! (I'm basically against prisons sentences), but there's not many other choices for dangerous offenders.

Well, yeah. I was Air Force. But it didn't take with all of us.

The AR-15 is increasingly out of favor with the U.S. military. I'd say the leading contender is the 6.5 x 49 for general-purpose infantry use in rifles and light machine guns.

In the civilian market, the AR-15 is for fantasists who think they's a-gonna overthrow them thar soshulists in Washtin.

They like to bang on about how it's a great hunting rifle, but a dozen states don't allow hunting deer with the 5.56 x 45 (the standard AR-15 ammo).
