60,907 firearms removed as next stage gun control begins in New Zealand
https://www.shine.cn/news/world/1912218409/

Government figure showed that around 60,907 prohibited firearms had been removed from circulation or were pending collection. More than 194,245 prohibited parts had been handed in, including items like high-capacity magazines and pistol grips which can be assembled into working firearms. 32,000 people had taken part in the buyback, with almost NZ$100 million (US$66 million) paid by the government in compensation.

"Gun register and tighter licensing system will be the next step for New Zealand government to control firearms," Nash said.

However, the efforts to remove unlawful firearms from circulation are to be continued as it is estimated by local firearms owners' council that 100,000 unlawful guns are not handed back.

"Police are now preparing to follow up firearms licence holders who are known to still hold prohibited guns. My strong advice to these people is to voluntarily surrender them or face risk of prosecution, loss of licence and firearms, and five years jail," Nash said.

About 20 thousand people sold the government unwanted guns that had no market value and bought new ones from the internet. No tax no documents. Leftys are so stupid.

New Zealand Gun Buyback Was An ‘Unmitigated Failure’

Many New Zealand gun owners have refused to participate in a mandatory buyback program of military-style semi-automatic weapons implemented after the Christchurch massacre in March.
Despite a penalty of up to five years in prison, up to two-thirds of firearms banned by the legislation were not turned in before the Friday deadline by New Zealand gun owners, the Washington Post reported.
While 47,000 semi-automatic rifles have been collected, according to police statistics, a government commissioned study determined that the small nation likely contains between 56,000 and 170,000 now banned weapons, according to 1 News.
New Zealand’s largest gun rights advocacy group, the Licensed Firearms Owners Council, remarked that the buyback program has been an “unmitigated failure.”
Police Minister Stuart Nash blamed the government’s inability to enforce its buyback scheme on a lack of gun registration. “The problem is we just don’t know exactly how many guns are out in the community, this is why we need a register, to enable Police to better track firearms,” he said, according to 1 News.
On March 15, 2019, a right-wing extremist opened fire on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand during Friday prayer, killing 51 worshipers and injuring 49 others. As a result of this terrorist attack, New Zealand’s parliament quickly passed legislation to ban all weapons similar to the ones used by the shooter.

Stuart Nash. (Reuters/Jorge Silva)
When it was first proposed, New Zealand’s plan to confiscate military-style weapons was praised by members of the American left.
Several Democratic presidential candidates, most notably New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker and former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke, have been vocal with their support for similar programs. (RELATED: Bernie Sanders Discovers Second Amendment Rights)
However, some experts said that the failure of New Zealand’s confiscation efforts bode poorly for similar programs proposed in the United States.
“The great majority of American rifles and handguns are semi automatic. I can’t imagine American gun owners going along with this [buybacks], even to the modest level of compliance that New Zealand seems to have gotten,” Eugene Volokh, a legal scholar from the University of California, told the Post.
The Post also noted how the vast majority of New Zealanders support more gun control, and that the country lacks constitutional protections for the right to bear arms — unlike the U.S.

Well, that maybe in NZ, it is not that way here.

My gun club was told by the gov't last year they had to have the membership record when they used handguns at the range, and which guns they were...........obviously so they could cross-check and take guns away from people who didn't use them enough. The club would be responsible to enforce this.

The club told them to go get phucked.

Just like the people asked to surrender guns will tell them to go get phucked...................or actually, won't say anything, but won't surrender unregistered guns either.

BTW, guns are not illegal in NZ, although ridiculous types of firearms are banned. I think you misspoke

Meh, it's the Daily Caller. I'm not even sure why Colpy bothered to post the article. What it would say was obvious.

I like the logic. If there are no mass shootings in the next year, they'll proclaim their great success. If there is another mass shooting, they'll declare the need for more gun control.

The problem is not guns.
It’s hearts without God.
Homes without discipline.
Schools without prayer.
Courts without justice.
