You said democracies.

Then you said Canada and western Europe. That is eleven countries. Big deal.

That is called cherry picking. In spades.

It is difficult to define countries with similar socio-economic and political systems

But that's fine, let's use the UN's High and Very High Human Development Indexes . Would you like a list of the countries on the UN's High and Very High Human Development Index that have worse murder rates than the USA's of 5.35 per 100,000?

Very High Human Development Index

Argentina: 5.94 per 100,000

Russia: 10.82 per 100,000

High Human Development Index. (Way too many to list, so I only looked at the TOP ten countries on the list, four of which qualify)

Barbados: 10.91

Uruguay: 7.69

Bahamas: 28.4

Panama: 9.67

Out of the top ten only!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_intentional_homicide_rate

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_Human_Development_Index

When you get down to the facts, your argument boils down to "Wait! But but but, all the countries with lower murder rates than the USA have lower murder rates than the USA!!"

Surprize.
That is rich coming from the cherry picking champion of the gun debate. And stop picking disfunctional countries like Russia and the Bahamas. It makes you look like a fool.

White nationalist climate change denier gets paid by the word.

Oh good Lord.

Your feelings don't matter, they are irrelevant.

The point is that there is no relationship between the number of guns in a society and the murder rate.

None.

If you think there is, provide the evidence.

Good luck, you'll need it.

Poor Hoid- he is a TRUE LIE-beral!!!!!

He relies ONLY on Fake News to promote his biased world view!!!!!

Consider this reality:

Here is an article illustrating the utterly twisted LIE-beral version of justice. With some comments of my own in brackets):

On the evening of June 22/2018, Toronto media screened film footage of a black kid being shot by cops and the footage was accompanied by the usual collection of outraged and weeping family members demanding justice!

Problem is- the black kid was an alleged gang member who had just taken part in a drive by shooting and was still in the getaway car when cops spotted it and closed in!

As the cops had already been warned the gang members were considered armed and dangerous it is little wonder that cops chose to shoot first and question later- when the kid bolted from the car and attempted to flee!

17-year-old Antwon Rose was fleeing and unarmed when police in East Pittsburgh shot him.

A bystander’s video shows an officer opening fire as Rose fled from police.

Antwon Rose, 17, was shot and killed by police in East Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Nickole Nesby via the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Police officers in East Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, shot and killed an unarmed, fleeing 17-year-old on Tuesday.

(Yes- it sounds so awful- some por kid shot down while simply being guilty of “driving while black” and that is the usual LIE-beral PROPAGANDA LIE!)

According to the Allegheny County Police Department, police initially responded to reports of a shooting around 8:20 pm on Tuesday, finding a 22-year-old man who had been shot but was taken to the hospital and survived. Police put out a call for a vehicle that was seen fleeing the scene, and officers stopped a car that they said matched the description. While they were detaining the driver of the car, two people jumped out. An officer opened fire, killing a 17-year-old.

The 17-year-old was Antwon Rose, a student at Woodland Hills School District, according to Shelly Bradbury and Andrew Goldstein at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Allegheny County Police Superintendent Coleman McDonough said Rose was unarmed, although officers found two guns in the vehicle he fled from.

(Uh- huh- a fleeing felon who likes to play with guns gets SHOT and the “community” of black bigots is upset! And no doubt the pals of the wounded 22 year old victim of the drive by figure that Antwon Rose got what he deserved- but LIE-beral friendly news media will NEVER report such sentiments for fear of embarrassing their LIE-beral vote buying masters!)

The 20-year-old driver of the vehicle was released after he was questioned by police. The third occupant of the car remains at large.

A bystander captured a video of the police shooting and posted it on Facebook. It shows two people running away from police cars, with their backs to the officers, as police open fire.

“Why are they shooting?” the person who recorded the video said. “All they did was run, and they’re shooting at them.”

(Testimony from the wounded 22 year old would suggest something OTHER than innocence!)

Multiple law enforcement agencies are investigating the shooting. The officer who opened fire has been put on leave, McDonough said.

The officer, who remains unnamed, was hired in May but reportedly sworn in the police department the same day of the shooting, although he had eight years of experience in other police departments.

According to the Post-Gazette, “Pennsylvania law allows police officers to use deadly force to prevent someone from escaping arrest if that person has committed a forcible felony, possesses a deadly weapon or if the person has indicated he or she will endanger human life or inflict bodily injury if not arrested.”

The shooting has led to large local protests. And it’s received national attention as police use of force, particularly against black Americans, continues drawing heightened scrutiny — due to vast racial disparities in police use of force.
Black people are much more likely to be killed by police than their white peers.

(Oh THERE IS A LIE!!!! The famous BLACK Professor Sowell has addressed this disgraceful urban legend in his writings and SCORNS IT! But LIE-berals never tire of repeating the lie in exchange for votes!)

Based on nationwide data collected by the Guardian, black Americans are more than twice as likely as their white counterparts to be killed by police when accounting for population. In 2016, police killed black Americans at a rate of 6.66 per 1 million people, compared to 2.9 per 1 million for white Americans.

(What a charmingly presented LIE! Black get more attention from cops than white people because they commit MORE CRIME! But based on number of stops made by cops it is actually white people who are more likely to get shot- but more blacks get shot in absolute numbers since more blacks are stopped! If you don’t want to get shot by cops then do not become a criminal! It sounds so simple but LIE-berals and Black Lives Matter bigots PRETEND not to understand! Figures do not lie- but LIE-berals figure- often and for very unsavoury reasons!)

There have also been several high-profile police killings since 2014 involving black suspects. In Baltimore, Freddie Gray died while in police custody — leading to protests and riots. In North Charleston, South Carolina, Michael Slager shot Walter Scott, who was fleeing and unarmed at the time. In Ferguson, Darren Wilson killed unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown. In New York City, NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo killed Eric Garner by putting the unarmed 43-year-old black man in a chokehold.

One possible explanation for the racial disparities: Police tend to patrol high-crime neighborhoods, which are disproportionately black. That means they’re going to be generally more likely to initiate a policing action, from traffic stops to more serious arrests, against a black person who lives in these areas. And all of these policing actions carry a chance, however small, to escalate into a violent confrontation.

(AS I have said- TOO MANY blacks are criminals! They see goin g to school and getting a decent education and a sensible job as “selling out to white society”! Being pimp, drug dealer or thief is NOT a viable career option although Black Lives Matter bigots want us to think AND PRETEND otherwise!)

I've already proven it. It is you who continually denies evidence to the contrary.

You've never even provided any evidence.

Look, the USA has many, many more weapons per capita than any other nation. Full stop.

Now, according to your philosophy, that means they should have the highest murder rate, or rather be among the highest murder rates on earth.

Not even close. Not remotely close. In fact, the USA murder rate is less than the world average.

And you need to compare societies to prove something, not just eliminate all that don't fully fit your preconceived idea, then claim victory.

As I've said many times......compare the following:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estimated_number_of_guns_per_capita_by_country

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_intentional_homicide_rate

Find a correlation, then you'll have made your point.....or mine.

BTW, spoiler alert: if there is a correlation, it is a negative one.

Northern Ontario,
Why is it that people never blame an inanimate object for an injury or death ...(unless there is a manufacturing defect)
The only time that happens is when a firearm is involved.....Why?

If you have even half a brain, you will listen to Colpy on anything to do with guns. There's no shame in deferring to the expert!

Colpy is one of the least informed people I have encountered in terms of the gun debate. But I guess that is why you would support him.

I mentioned many years ago that I don't like debating the firearms problem with gun worshippers. The problem is they are immune to logic and will tell any lie or cherry pick any stat to defend their obsession with firearms. And yet they cannot answer one simple question. Why do so many gun deaths occur in the US? Until you can answer that question this debate is closed so far as I am concerned.

In your mind I suppose. If I was you, I don't think I'd tell too many people that. You might get laughed right off the forum.

Knowledge of guns has very little to do with gun deaths. Actually I'd say lack of knowledge of guns has more to do with it. When you denigrate a man like Colpy's knowledge of guns you just erode your own credibility. The fact that he basically expounds on only one subject leads me to believe his vast knowledge of guns. A "know it all" will expound on every subject.

I support everything I say in a debate.

You do not.

Not only that, I rarely use gun advocates' facts and figures, I use neutral sources, as I don't believe everything I'm told by partisan sources.

You listen to MSM, and suck it up.

Learn to think for yourself.

You are like a petulant child, confronted with something they don't like.

There are a lot of gun deaths in the USA for the same reason there are a lot of murders in any society......a culture of violence that exists, mostly in inner cities. This is demonstrated by the fact that in 2015 (a typical year) 53% of US murders are committed by Blacks, who make up only 13% of the population...........and live largely in the inner cities.

https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u....murder_offenders_by_age_sex_and_race_2015.xls

The same thing is happening at Jane and Finch in Toronto. Despite tough gun control.

Now, pull your phucking head out of your arse and support your BS with nonpartisan stats, or STFU.

Your childish inability to engage in debate is irritating and counter productive. Your arrogant attitude of "I've made up my mind, don't confuse me with the facts" is becoming somewhat irritating.

That is a dumbass question for a Canadian to ask.

You could be asking what has Canada done differently and are there trends to show that it is improving faster than the US?

Not really rocket science! Huge population for starters. It's a multi racial country with huge differences in demographics. Lots of wealthy people. Add to that a huge influx of undesirables into the country and you have a perfect recipe for mayhem!
