Governments spend too much on Seniors

What are you talking about?
If you reside in Canada it is the law to report all income and pay taxes
OAS is not a social program you are completely confused.
It is defined as a benefit available to most Canadians at retirement.
If you have paid no taxes in Canada and have no income you will be eligible for Social Assistance and OAS and GIS at 65.
You will be required to file taxes with the government.

The OAS BENEFIT is simply a scheme that returns some accrued money back the the Citizens of Canada at 65.
It is clawed back between $75 and $100,000 a year simply because the rich are deemd not to need it.
If you are very low income Social Assistance and GIS as well as other programs may be available.
OAS is not a Social Assistence program and has never been considered one.

You personally may feel that OAS should clawed back at a lower threshold but that's your opinion.

Others may feel that there should be no income taxes at all and the government should hand out free weed.

Forget the reduction of the threshold we already have a perfectly functioning social support system....it's called social assistance. If seniors really need extra money to survive get the money from social assistance like every other canadian.

Yup, Canada needs more population. They have for quite some time now. If the bonus's help us have more kids, then have at er.

Why exactly do we need more population? To help pay for programs and infrastructure? How about axing OAS and putting another $32 Billion in the system each year?

Northern Ontario,
I'm not sure I understand how you came up with that figure- I'm pretty sure I'm getting the max. on O.A.P. and pretty close to the max. on Canada Pension (I forfeited a $few by taking it at age 60) and I'm getting $14796 annually right now.
You seem to be pretty much in the same bracket I am having taken my CPP at 60... since my combined cpp/ oas is $14608.
I'm even eligible for a few dollars a month in OAS supplement since my work pension, although very good, is not comparable with public workers pension..
Now young folks in town would think that because every summer I hit the road for two or three months with a trailer, I must be very well off, but what they don't realise is that I have learned to budget and not spend on booze smokes and things.
I could afford to spend my winters in Florida or Nevada, but the way my medication keeps changing, the insurance cost would be prohibitive
The trick simply is to buy all the toys you think you might need before you retire, and keep your fingers crossed that they last until you're too old to enjoy them.

I'm glad that you're able to be frugal and save enough money for the summers traveling, the question is whether the government should be giving you on average $6000 of OAS to pay for it? Why should seniors get $6K a year when the rest of society must work and scrimp and save as much money as they can simply to try to keep a roof over their heads?

Because they worked and scrimped and paid taxes to get it.

Karrie, you seem to be misinformed as well. There is absolutely NO requirement to pay any taxes to collect OAS. NONE.

If you are a canadian citizen and have live at least 10 years in Canada then when you reach the age of 65 or 67 in the future you are entitled to collect OAS.

CPP is more indicative of what you are referring to. I have no problem with that program because as you said, people have worked and paid for their CPP pension. However, OAS is simply play money. There is NO income requirement.

In fact, you reason is exactly the opposite of how OAS works. The more people work and the more taxes they pay, the more likely they will NOT collect OAS as their income will reclude them from receiving.

While I support the idea that we should support immigration, we need both imo. We need the 2.3 kids, and we need healthy immigration.

I tend not to do the thumbs up or down thing.
It seems kinda Roman Coliseum'ish.

Just saying I highly agree with your last couple of posts.
Why would we count on other nations to fill in our demographic shortfalls?

My fellow Canadians, get out there and get boinking for gawds sake.

How hard can it be?
pun intended.

...and they shouldn't.

There should be a reasonable cut-off point. I would suggest we take the average annual income, say $45K/yr, double it for 2 working parents so $90K, anything over that gets no benefit. You already lose the CCTB & GST etc and how much difference will $1200/yr really make to family with an income of $90k or more.

I highly doubt there is a huge draw to come to Canada for 6000 free dollars a year. MOST people on OAS have paid plenty of taxes into the system.

For the most part what these F*^%(*# idiots don't understand is that it is mainly a case of just getting our money back that we've paid in over the past 50 years. Sure, as in everything there is going to be some who contribute more and some who contribute less. Some A$$holes should pay attention to their own business and leave the people alone who wiped their noses and other orifices! including one A$$hole whose only talent is giving reds to people whose I.Q. exceeds his by about 800%.

Personally I avoid thumbs down (except for a few special occasions), but I do a lot of thumbs up when I just want to say 'I agree', or 'thanks'. This one would have gotten a thank you thumb. lol.

BTW, I keep trying for my 0.3rd kid, and have yet to be able to manage. Something about missing the essential giblets. But dammit, for the love of country, I give it my best.

Instead of a second bullshyte rant on the subject why don't you, instead of ranting against people who have paid taxes in this country
All their lives Why not rant against senior family members of immigrants who have been here only ten years without paying a penny in taxes, who are eligible for oas and the full supplement...
Or would that be too politically incorrect for you............

JLM, OAS clearly isn't about "getting our money back that we've paid in over the past 50 years" because firstly there is NO requirement to pay any taxes to collect and secondly the people who pay the most taxes, "rich" are excluded from receiving any OAS at all.
