Surely you don't expect an educated, intelligent, thoughtful person like me to take a citation of a noisy pseudo-intellectual barbarian like Ann Coulter seriously as an explanation of anything? :icon_smile:

Dawkins is right that evolution is a fact, and that it's one of the best-attested, most wide ranging and successful scientific theories we have, and that a person's grasp of it is a pretty good first order test of intellectual sophistication and understanding of reality.

It is said that only two out of every hundred people in developed countries around the world actually comprehends the science behind global warming.....much less believe it even while understanding....now that is a science with numbers and facts.

Now, if we extrapolate from that to a theory, the theory of evolution which I'm sure even fewer people fully understand and I'm not even sure that believing in evolution means that it follows that you can't believe in a creator...

Anyways, to say outright that if you don't believe in evolution you are an uneducated ignoramus is condescending at best....

Belief shouldn't enter into it, evolution is a fact as well established as anything in science. Not believing in evolution is about on par with not believing in gravity or believing the earth is flat. It's a reasonable and readily defensible conclusion that a person who doesn't believe in evolution must be both uneducated and ignorant, if not in general then at least on the subject of science. And considering how important science is to the technology that surrounds and cossets us, and our broader understanding of the world we've created, that's a pretty serious failing in a person aspiring to high public office.

I take it you feel you're among them? I seriously doubt it's as high as 98% though, maybe 75% in the U.S. and around 50% in the rest of the western world. The details of evolutionary theory can get pretty arcane, but the basic idea's not hard to grasp, unless you're blinded by religious dogma that simply denies it. Even the Pope has officially more or less bought it in a weaselly sort of way, surely you're at least as smart as he is.

I would say Tonington's comment is more about describing Mr. Perry's views rather than testing them.

Gerry, you wouldn't know a stupid comment or an ignorant asshole if it jumped up and bit you, you simply respond to any critical comment about your church as if it were by definition stupid and ignorant, without actually thinking about it. There is a papal document in which the Pope accepts evolution in principle then weasels out of it with caveats based on religious dogma with no evidential basis at all. That's stupid and ignorant. I'm not, and I don't believe you are either, we just disagree on certain fundamental beliefs and you have a knee jerk, name calling reaction to even the gentlest criticism of yours. I think you're smarter than that, you just don't choose to show it here. You've decided to be a jerk on this subject, for reasons of your own which I don't care to speculate on, but I'm sure you could do better in defense of your faith. I'm also sure you won't, because you think it's claims should be above criticism. You're wrong about that too.

No Gerry, you're not thinking, or not paying attention, or not caring. Maybe all three. Any truth claim must be justified, putting the religious label on it doesn't exempt it from criticism or give it automatic respect, it stands or falls on its own merits. I've seen some very cogent defenses of Catholicism from thinkers like Merton and Chesterton, read some brilliant fictionalizations from apologists like Morris West, one of my top 5 favourite novelists, and listened to the arguments from Catholic relatives for whom I have great respect. There are ways to produce a reasoned defense of your faith, but vituperation and name calling are not among them. You can't expect anyone to take you seriously if you won''t engage seriously in the argument.
