Genderless preschool bans 'him' and 'her' | News.com.au

AT the Egalia preschool, staff avoid using words like "him" or "her" and address the 33 kids as "friends" rather than girls and boys.

From the colour and placement of toys to the choice of books, every detail has been carefully planned to make sure the children don't fall into gender stereotypes.

"Society expects girls to be girlie, nice and pretty and boys to be manly, rough and outgoing," says Jenny Johnsson, a 31-year-old teacher.

"Egalia gives them a fantastic opportunity to be whoever they want to be."

The taxpayer-funded preschool which opened last year in the liberal Sodermalm district of Stockholm for kids aged one to six is among the most radical examples of Sweden's efforts to engineer equality between the sexes from childhood onward.

Breaking down gender roles is a core mission in the national curriculum for preschools, underpinned by the theory that even in highly egalitarian-minded Sweden, society gives boys an unfair edge.

To even things out, many preschools have hired "gender pedagogues" to help staff identify language and behaviour that risk reinforcing stereotypes.

Some parents worry things have gone too far. An obsession with obliterating gender roles, they say, could make the children confused and ill-prepared to face the world outside kindergarten.

"Different gender roles aren't problematic as long as they are equally valued," says Tanja Bergkvist, a 37-year-old blogger and a leading voice against what she calls "gender madness" in Sweden.

Those bent on shattering gender roles "say there's a hierarchy where everything that boys do is given higher value, but I wonder who decides that it has higher value," she says. "Why is there higher value in playing with cars?"

At Egalia - the title connotes "equality" - boys and girls play together with a toy kitchen, waving plastic utensils and pretending to cook. One boy hides inside the toy stove, his head popping out through a hole.

Lego bricks and other building blocks are intentionally placed next to the kitchen to make sure the children draw no mental barriers between cooking and construction.

Director Lotta Rajalin notes that Egalia places a special emphasis on fostering an environment tolerant of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people. From a bookcase, she pulls out a story about two male giraffes who are sad to be childless - until they come across an abandoned crocodile egg.

Nearly all the children's books deal with homosexual couples, single parents or adopted children. There are no Snow White, Cinderella or other classic fairy tales seen as cementing stereotypes.

Rajalin, 52, says the staff also try to help the children discover new ideas when they play.

"A concrete example could be when they're playing 'house' and the role of the mom already is taken and they start to squabble," she says. "Then we suggest two moms or three moms and so on."................

So what about other couples.... like a friggin Man & Woman?

So now there's two or three moms..... ok.... so now they're supporting lesbian polygamy.

You can still have gender equality without wiping out any concept of Gender ffs..... how's it Gender Equality when you remove Gender from the equation all together?

Indeed.. this crap is going to far.

A good point later on in the report:
"Jay Belsky, a child psychologist at the University of California, Davis, said he's not aware of any other school like Egalia, and he questioned whether it was the right way to go.

"The kind of things that boys like to do - run around and turn sticks into swords - will soon be disapproved of," he said. "So gender neutrality at its worst is emasculating maleness."

And it does the same thing towards females.

All you have to do is teach each aspect of the gender is equally important and the things commonly known to be linked to a gender throughout history is equally important to one another, but can also be done by the opposite sex. There are no ground rules that state that you have to abide to one gender stereo-type or the other..... but ignoring it and pretending there are zero differences to the degree that they won't even talk to you or identify you as a boy or girl is wrong imo...... it's a form of brain washing.... and maybe they think it's good brainwashing, but it's not the right approace at all.

I'm sorry, but this kind of thinking is fuct in the head.

Political correctness gone mad. Although really, political correctness is pretty much mad from the beginning. Let's all pretend the facts are other than what they are, shall we? I'm sure that'll lead to many new and useful insights.

Where does Naturally correct and Naturally incorrect fit in to the life of a girl born in a boy's body or vice versa? How do you prepare a child and his/her peers to accept that there are some kids who aren't male and aren't female no matter how they loook or what's in their pants?

I watched a transgender grow-up. I know what he went through emotionally and how he was treated physically due to learned responses of homophobia of his peers.

Why should they have to wait 20 years to be who they are?

If you are happier with homophobiia and transgenders hiding in the closet afraid, ashamed and confused then go sew a wang and some boobs on those dolls.

To say that is a political move is the stupidest ****ling thing you've said to date Dexter.

All the preschoolers will know who are boys and who are girls, thereby proving that they wiser, smarter and more mature than Jenny Johnston and all her idiotic, politically correct liberal clones.

WTF does liberal have to do with a discussion on gender? Jack, you are a political zealot. Have you ever posted anything that did not contain a jab at liberals? I have never (except for eanassir) seen anybody with such a one track mind.

Stay on topic, Cliffy!

I encourage you to get in touch with (gender-neutral) Jenny Johnston and ask her about her political affiliation. If he/she (?) indicates 'not liberal' I will personally drive to B.C. find you and treat you to the best vegetarian dinner of your life.

There are things in life one take for granted. Like Sun comes up, Sun goes down. Spring follows Winter, etc.

Add: Jenny Johnston and anybody this painfully politically correct is a liberal.

Will they? Did you know which of your friends while growing up were transgender?

How many of you school friends are transgender Yukon Jack? Can you give a number?

What about the boys who like to play dolls or do their hair or prefer MiniMouse over Mickey Mouse? Will they be banned from doing that? What about the girls that run around playing swords with the boys? They will still be allowed run and play swords with sticks?

How do you explain transgender Conservatives? Do think there isn't any? Chances are you've voted for one somewhere down the line but had no idea that person was transgender.

Seems like a system that will confuse all kids. Is it OK for a boy to go play in the kitchen but not a girl. WHat about playing cops and robbers? girls only? Or is that not PC enough for any kid to play in a school run by a bunch of man haters?

This is an unfortunate repercussion of generations of social conservatism, and while the backlash looks ludicrous, we should realize that this is what we get for operating like brainless robots of gender stereotyping for so long.

It was up to parents to teach their children that pivotal fact, not schools or government. But now that we have failed on a grassroots-level, it will become a tag line from the institutions that we depend on.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, YJ, but this madness was spawned by the social conservatism of the religious right.

More than before yet definitely not where it should be. I credit the unions for closing the gap. Alot of the politically correct are still elitists that more interested in ideas instead of change.

I notice one of the dolls has an outie. It could be that they both have outies. Where would that
leave those of us with innies? Damned unfair if you asked me.
