A fundamental Catholic would have no choice but to abandon birth control, or be a sinner.

CUBert, I have helped needy people by my labour thru Habitat for Humanity for two weeks of my six week vacation time from 1993 till 2003 when I retired and my health had not allowed me to do it any more. Granted these people I helped were in the "third world" of North America. And as an aside, in all those trips I NEVER met a single Democrat/Liberal. I helped the people I helped because they were willing to provide 'sweat equity' to earn my help. Do yourself a favor and look up Habitat for Humanity on Google.
