It is their nation and their decision to make. Go to Russia and get caught engaged in Homosexual acts and go to jail. Ivan is waiting to see if he can consumate another marriage. He has a cell block full of friends right now.

sure, thats easy to say when you have no connection or emotional thoughts for the people who you are
easily deciding to be the pawns in this issue.

I would like to see you as the athlete, who has spent years practicing and learning, and who's familieshave
put much money and time towards their pursuit, then casually tell you to stay home, you are being
chosen as the pawns to make a point, nah, not fair, doesn't make any 'thoughtful' sense to me at all.

too easy, far too easy, without any thoughts to the athletes and coaches and families.

I guess on this matter we have to agree to disagree. No problem. -:) The world would be boring if we were all the same.

so, you are saying that all of the athletes should agree and fall into line, and be used by our
government, without any alternative. you certainly don't have a clue of the importance of the
olympics re: preparation, anticipation, participation, memories.

without looking into other ideas, without having any respect.

jeesh, on the other thread, you would only fine the 'hate' people $10.00, and you weren't joking,
you just felt a few feelings would be hurt, and that is all, now a complete l80.

that was a hate crime.

I won't just agree to disagree, I insist on disagreeing with you.

BUT if the IOC discuss this matter with the russian government, and have a very difficult time coming
to an agreement 'during' the games, then I would definitely look to alternative measures, what that
would be, not sure, cross that bridge later.

don't like that, 'oh well, doesn't matter about the athletes attitude, shows complete disrespect for
what they have accomplished to get to this point, then have someone say, "oh by the way", you are not
going.

our government won't stop trading and/or buying from russia, won't stop russian people from immigrating
to this country, won't kick up a big stink at the united nations, wont have 'one on one' meetings to discuss
this problem, no way, just use the athletes, very wimpy indeed.

So. . . did you not read the OP, or did you simply not understand it?

Don't despair, I'm not always right, I'm going to review the entire issue as well as I can. Give me a day or so and I'll give you my answer.

their handlers will of course welcome any prosecution and the unearned resulting public relations bonanza which of course will plug the airwaves with mountains more of LGBT whining so much so that we will perhaps not notice the end of the world as we know it. This is very much the light end of humanitarian work, fine the LGBT community will have rights and laws but the poor and occupied will still be very much in the thick of misery and that will be no fracking victory at all. It's a subject most of the world is sick and tired of hearing about.

I am a little surprised at what I said has upset you so much and when I commented on this I certainly wasn't in any way relating it to the discussion on "hate crimes" (which I'll stick by). Anyway I was speaking in general terms when I said "wait until we cross that bridge" and "I don't go where I'm not wanted". Of course I didn't go as far as to realize the Olympics are run by rules arrived at internationally by the I.O.C. so of course any rules the Russians want to impose won't "fly" anyway (and I was only speaking in the context that their rules would "fly") So I think and hope the fact of the matter is all athletes regardless of their sexual orientation can attend the Olympics and expect to have a good time free from hassles. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I hear you, the level of interest in the Olympics runs the entire gamut across socio-economic sectors. But whatever the sector, I can not see anything wrong with anybody who can derive enjoyment from them. I've never believed that because someone is suffering someone else is not allowed to have a little fun. Would it be better if everyone suffered?

The issue isn't just the gay athletes but their families/loved ones, too. If a gay athlete has a s/o going over to watch as well, both would be arrested according to Russian law. They wouldn't be allowed - as I understand the law - to show any affection for one another, win or lose, because that would be 'promoting' homosexuality and would be seen as illegal.

I read tonight about how one gay athlete is still going, regardless of the consequences. But being openly gay, it could land him in jail for 14 days.

I actually feel sorry for these athletes, it's going to be hellishly tough for them in Russia no matter what. :(

Crazy. Even Hitler didnt charge people he hated in the '36 games. Though I imagine he really wanted to after Jesse Owens humiliated him. ha

It would be if half of the countries withheld their athletes.

It'd be a bit odd. In the original Olympic games people would temporarily stop wars to take part. Then go right back to it afterwards. What Russia is doing is nothing compared to that.

So what behaviour will they deem as being openly gay? Hell guys in team sports practically tongue each other they get so excited. How would they even know an athlete is gay? Do I have to state I am straight somewhere? Is there going to be security looking for gayness?

They can't do anything but "blow" wind.

Qatar is hosting the World Cup, and they jail gays..

Perhaps they will be next. Arent the Olympics a bit bigger than the world cup? I have no idea. Im not much of a sports fan.

Oh, great. Suck some more outrageous amounts of dough ($6 billion or thereabouts) outta other BCers, other Canadians just for the benefit of the lower mainland.

Then go to Russia and play. Boycotting them in 1980 did absolutely nothing. No point in doing it again.
