Harper says no decriminalization of pot on his watch

Prime Minister Stephen Harper says his government will never agree to the decriminalization of marijuana.

Harper's comments came Friday in Vancouver in response to a question at a brief news conference following an event at a downtown science centre.

"No, it will not happen under our government," Harper said. “We're very concerned about the spread of drugs in the country and the damage it's doing and as you know we have legislation before the House [of Commons] to crack down." This week, four former Vancouver mayors endorsed the Stop the Violence Coalition, which is comprised of former police officers, a judge, medical leaders and B.C.'s former chief coroner.

The coalition's founding principle is that regulation and taxation of marijuana would stop most of the violence associated with the drug trade and make pot less accessible to children.

Current Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson has said he agrees with the coalition's goals.

"We see the impact on the streets. We see the gang activity that's largely funded by the marijuana trade, a huge industry here in B.C.," Robertson said. "There's no tax revenue flowing from [it], so I think it's time for reform."

Mr Harper and I part company on this one. He needs to get his head out of the sand and realize that the cost of policing pot is an expense that taxpayers shouldn't have to bear for such an innocuous substance. IMHO.

I think most of us part company with Harper on this one. He should be taking note that policing this is not only a waste of money but counterproductive (see Mexico).

Yeah, Harper needs to kick back, have a long haul on the bong, and reconsider his ridiculous anti-drug stances, at least where marijuana is concerned.

Don't hold your breath. :)

But he should hold his breath, either til he comes to his senses, or passes out. Personally, I think about 2 or 3 ounces of LSD in the parliamentary drinking water system would bring this madness to an end.

Harper was just preaching to the choir on this one. As soon as the polls show 60%+ support he will change his mind but do it as a tax measure to help cover the cost of policing and medical expenses rung up by tobacco and alcohol abusers so as not to upset his core too much.

The best approach is to allow growing you own. This way you still have money to spend in real parts of the economy and life in general instead of buying weed. That makes it have no value. Taxed to **** it still has value and still encourages a black market.

Not a religious thing, but why do people have to enhance their lives with recreational drugs of any kind, are they missing a live a normal life gene?

Is this a serious post?

No. Otherwise there would be no alcohol on the marker. Of far greater concern is the abuse of prescription drugs. Especially when taxpayers are footing the bill for a significant portion of it. Somehow we don't here much about that because a different bunch of criminals are in control of the loot.

Not everybody who do drugs do it for recreational reasons. Humans have been doing drugs since our cave days to enlighten, for spiritual purposes. Just about every indigenous culture on the planet has used psychotropic drugs in ritual.

A vast majority in our culture that use drugs abuse drugs for recreational use, the worst being alcohol.

I enhance my life with recreational drugs because pharmaceutical drugs have failed to make it livable.

Every culture has some form of recreational ''drug'' (for lack of a better term) whether it be in alcohol or herbal form. They key is that the form is natural, not created artificially.
