I saw a guy on C.B.C. this morning, being interviewed who had just passed through Fort Mac in the convoy and he said he got a fairly good view of the down town core and most of the structures are still standing, the media having grossly exaggerated the amount of damage....................but then I guess that's how you sell newspapers! :) I

I believe it is the suburbs that are burning ... right now.

Yes, I agree with you. When towns or cities are built in densely wooded areas they risk falling victim to forest fires. What I don't buy is that forest fires have anything to do with climate change. I was raised in BC and every summer we had a fire season. When the Okanagan caught fire a few years ago and Kelowna suffered damage it had sweet bugger all to do with this ridiculous religion known as climate change.

Fires are caused by dry weather, electrical storms, careless humans and have been around long before the the chicken little idiots tried hitching their wagon to it. Been around long before we walked the planet and will continue to be around long after Mentalfloss posts his last cut and paste.

What I loved, was the fu cking moron that was blaming all this on Global warming. Stating that the heat wave up there proves Global warming. Fort Mac and area broke records. Hottest on that day since 1945. Wow, ROFLMFAO, and the brain dead idiot doesn't even realize what he said. Broke a record set in 1945. Was the record set in 1945 because of Global warming also? ROFLMAO.

Well, give him credit for being 1/2 right, Gerry. The world is warming even if it didn't start the fire. My guess it was some a$$hole with a match or cigarette! :)

The world is warming, is it. Maybe it just feels that way because you're getting closer and closer to hell each day.

Fort McMurray wildfire: First clear satellite images show deserted streets, burned homes | Globalnews.ca

Fort McMurray is situated at the confluence of two rivers, the Clearwater and the Athabasca, The town started at river level and grew up the hillside to the west, first adjacent to the original townsite, and then across the Athabasca on the hillsides there. The highway runs between the original townsite and the hills to the west. Given that the growth outside the original, river level townsite is now vastly larger the whole of the original townsite is often called "downtown" even though it is made up of both commercial and residential areas. The satellite imagery at the link above shows before-and-after pictures of the neigbourhoods on the hills west of downtown, plus one of the older neighbourhoods on the "downtown" side of the highway, most of these areas were burned out completely. As yet the commercial center in the original townsite, an area most of us would think of when someone says "downtown", has been largely untouched. The National Post reported a couple of days ago that 1600 structures had been destroyed. Most of these were residences on the west side of the highway. Use your mouse to slide between the before and after segments of each picture. There is also a bit of a time lapse map at the bottom showing the progress of the fire through the western neigbourhoods, across the southern "downtown" section and north from there, pretty much surrounding the commercial core but leaving it alone for the time being.

Fort McMurray Grade 9 student identified as victim in Wednesday car crash
By Trevor Robb First posted:

A Fort McMurray girl was one of two people killed in a fiery crash Wednesday on Highway 881 near Lac La Biche, school district officials confirmed Thursday.
“Emily Ryan, one of the triplets, died at the scene. She was a vibrant, engaging member of our student body,” said Fort McMurray Composite High School principal Kevin Bergen in a post on the district website.
“We are shocked, and saddened. Our prayers and thoughts are with Emily’s family as they deal with this trying situation,” said district superintendent Doug Nicholls.
Emily’s father is Cranley Ryan, deputy fire chief in Saprae Creek in Wood Buffalo. She was 16.
Ryan was one of two people killed Wednesday in a crash that sparked another wildfire and closed the highway northeast of Lac La Biche, near the Heart Lake First Nation, prompting more people to evacuate their homes.
The crash happened in the afternoon on Range Road 94, about 75 kilometres northeast of Lac La Biche, RCMP said. A semitrailer and an SUV collided.
Highway 881 is one of two major roads motorists used to leave Fort McMurray when a massive wildfire forced the city-wide evacuation of 80,000 people on Tuesday evening.

Dear Lord, don't let that be our RCS-to-the-rescue behind the wheel of that semi.

Amen

Look, I'm not at any rescue and I'm not a hero. I haven't even been called on to go to Fort Mac. I want to go, because I want to contribute, but I'm sure most want to do the same thing. As it stands now, I'm stuck in a holding pattern doing another job. Very sad about the accident, but this is not an unusual occurrence on any highway in Canada.

It is a major miracle that those were the only deaths associated with these fires. I can hardly believe it.

Exactly, and given that the accident occurred a couple of hundred kilometers from Fort McMurray it's a bit of a stretch to even call it fire related. Considering they moved over 80,000 people out of the city in a matter of hours it's a pretty impressive feat.

It is now being reported that the fire is just to big and too hot to fight effectively, it may burn for weeks.

I think you are supposed to phone them.
I would think most of the ones getting jobs would be the ones from there that suffered damage themselves. You just make sure your rig doesn't fall apart on the ice roads.

No, we have a few drivers assigned to support. I just happened to be in Saskatchewan when the call came in for support and then my clutch went out..

Maybe not quite the `fu cking moron, you think, Ger! It was just reported on the news this morning that the fire at Fort Mac is PARTLY attributable to Climate change. Perhaps it is you who are the ``fu cking moron``:) :)

Exactly how can they attribute cause (partial or otherwise) when the climate alarmists can't even truly define, let alone prove the theory in the first place?

Just 'cause the news reports it doesn't mean it's fact

I think you are probably right but by the same token they can't say it isn't either! :)

P.S. we have to be careful not to say anything that might go to Gerry's head. :) :) :)

They can say what they want, doesn't make it true. "They" also said we'd be all dead by 2000, yet here we are. "They" said that we would have major drought and famine with billions dyeing before the turn of the century, ain't happened. "They" said that the North Pole would be ice free by 2013, didn't happen. NOTHING "they" have said has come true.

How about "they" explain the record high in '45.

I don't know the correct answer, Gerry. I can say I've noticed a change in the weather since I was a kid (check the stats for B.C. for Jan. - March 1950). I think it's quite possible climate change has played a role, how much I wouldn't have a clue.
