You'd best look into Chinese industrial investment into Vietnam.

What's that got to do with anything? That would be like calling Canada a vassal state of the USA or China a vassal state of the Western nations that have invested in China. If foreign investment is your definition of being a vassal state then there aren't many countries left that don't fit into that category. BTW the biggest investor in Vietnam is Taiwan. Is that what you meant by China? Mainland China is not even in the top five.
